Okay, can we talk about this rationally? Hide Poster Option

Tee2072 · 01/11/2013 07:47

Without bringing up anyone's banning, who we want to hide or anything other than the possibility of Justine changing her mind and the feasibility of Tech being able to do it?

Main argument: will make holes in threads.
Counter argument: no more than a thread of a thousand deletions

Supplemental argument: You will still be able to see what others are saying to the hidden poster which could be even more annoying or confusing.
Counter argument: Take a look at how Delphi Forums does it. You have the option of seeing a hidden person's post if you want to.

Final argument: Total paranoia from people thinking people have hidden them.
Counter argument: there isn't one. nothing can be done about personal paranoia

I've changed my mind. I really really want a Hide Poster button, and I'll quite happily use it to hide a poster across the boards, no matter what she says, no matter what name she is now using and no matter what subject she is posting on.

Thank you.

MurderOfGoths · 01/11/2013 15:30

I think it would be good. For all those that don't like it you wouldn't have to use it, but it might save the sanity of some of us.

There are very few posters I would hide, but at the moment I find I end up hiding whole threads to avoid them when I'd much rather read the thread but hide the posts guaranteed to wind me up. Not because I'd feel driven to respond (though sometimes the desire to just post "cunt cunt cunt" is strong) but because it's often on topics which are deeply emotive to me, and so upsetting to read the same old bullshit.

RowanMumsnet · 01/11/2013 15:34

Hello

Thank you for the very temperate thread

We've had a read, and it seems to us the balance of opinion is still against the idea on the whole - which is still where we at MNHQ are, for the reasons outlined here.

We don't have infinite tech resources (as we're sure you've noticed...) and we think they're better concentrated on things that we think would work better, and that the majority of posters really want.

Sorry to disappoint those of you who clearly do feel strongly that it would be a good addition.

Tee2072 · 01/11/2013 16:12

Thanks Rowan. I'll drop it for the next few months.

Thanks Rowan.

Ed's script still seems to be working, so I'll go back to using that, I think.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 01/11/2013 16:16

Oh bugger I just hit the wrong button and ignored myself. Duh.

southeastastra · 01/11/2013 16:18

good mn

suggests a smelling salts emoticon for those too sensitive to other people's opinions

SirChenjin · 01/11/2013 16:35

Not too sensitive - just can't be arsed to read the same old crap (which don't merit the term 'opinion') spouted by the same old posters.

Shame MN has taken this decision, but can't say I'm surprised.

SirChenjin · 01/11/2013 16:37

And for those of you saying 'don't read them' - the MN mantra is RTFT, followed by dogs abuse for those who don't Hmm

garlicvampire · 01/11/2013 16:48

I can tell when somebody's using the plugin to ignore me Grin It gives me the peculiar feeling I need an interpreter - because they'll reply to another poster, who's paraphrased what I wrote or replied clearly.

Holes in conversations. Weird.

usualsuspect · 01/11/2013 16:48

Sometimes I think I would like an ignore poster option.

But I'm not sure I would use it,I know I'd just have to unhide them to see what they said.

I'd rather have a timed edit function tbh.

garlicvampire · 01/11/2013 16:49

Well, SirChenjin, you can't RTFT if you can't see a proportion of the posts, can you?

usualsuspect · 01/11/2013 16:50

I wonder how many posters have me on ignore already Grin

garlicvampire · 01/11/2013 16:53

I did like your headpat, Rowan Wink Nothing like honesty, is there?!

garlicvampire · 01/11/2013 16:54

Did you say something, usual?

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 16:57

RTFT means read the thread, not read every single post even if it's tolling/abusive. It's said when someone responds to the OP or an early post 400 posts in, by which point the OP has come back and admitted they were wrong/given extra information. No-one has ever been 'abused' for not reading abusive/pointless/trolling posts.

How do you plan to RTFT when you have some posters hidden? Un-hide their posts or don't read any thread that they're on?

TunipTheUnconquerable · 01/11/2013 16:58

Garlic, how can you tell if they're using the plugin or if they're just good at ignoring?

One thing I have got from this thread is that some people don't seem to have any trouble with it and others of us do. I can ignore things in some areas and not in others.

Also, if they're replying to something you said but to someone else's paraphrase, but it not just be that they couldn't be bothered to read your long post but read the shorter one? If I'm skimming a thread I might go straight to shorter posts by people I know from experience explain stuff in terms I can understand - absolutely nothing personal about it and no intention to ignore specific posters, but the result would be the same.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 01/11/2013 16:59

sorry, that should say 'might it not be'

ouryve · 01/11/2013 17:03

Thanks Rowan.

Glad of the greasemonkey script shared here, even if it does make all my blue bars huge!

wetaugust · 01/11/2013 17:09

No thank you

SirChenjin · 01/11/2013 17:09

No, you can't RTFT if you have them hidden - brilliant, isn't it?

And then when some posters jump up and down and stamp their little feet and say "why haven't you RTFT, you didn't RTFT, are you new to MN, you didn't RTFT, I'm telling, YABU, etc etc blah blah blah" you can say "no, I didn't RTFT because I have hidden the numpty".

And then you can sit back and watch them implode.

A win-win (or it would have been, if MN towers had seen sense)

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 17:15

As I explained RTFT, doesn't mean 'read EVERY post', so I don't think that scenario is going to happen.

That would only happen if the poster you've hidden is vital to the thread e.g. they're the OP. You post without knowing what they've said, so your comments are pointless, someone tells you to RTFT, you wittily reply 'can't I've hidden them'.....then they say 'WTF are you on this thread for?! Why are ruining it for everyone with your pointless posts?! Maybe they hide you because now you're posts are the annoying ones.

How is that better than just ignoring trolls?

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 17:17

*your not you're Blush

SirChenjin · 01/11/2013 17:28

And equally no-one would say "WTF are you on this thread for" - because hide poster would be an actual MN option and therefore there wouldn't be any point in arguing.

RTFT does, in fact, mean read the entire thread (or certainly, there are plenty who believe this to be the case). How many times have you seen a post along the lines of "I haven't read every post, sorry Blush" or "I said X 27 hours ago, RTFT". RTFT does not mean skim read, or just read a few post. Not every poster who spouts crap on a regular basis is a troll - sometimes they are just posters who spout crap on a regular basis.

Anyway, someone upthread (see, I RTFT Wink) has posted some bit of kit that enables you to hide a poster, so I will be using that from now on. Bliss.

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 17:33

'And equally no-one would say "WTF are you on this thread for" - because hide poster would be an actual MN option and therefore there wouldn't be any point in arguing.'

They would if you openly admit to hiding the OP! You can't join in a thread where you've hidden someone whose posts are vital to the flow of information.
