Okay, can we talk about this rationally? Hide Poster Option

Tee2072 · 01/11/2013 07:47

Without bringing up anyone's banning, who we want to hide or anything other than the possibility of Justine changing her mind and the feasibility of Tech being able to do it?

Main argument: will make holes in threads.
Counter argument: no more than a thread of a thousand deletions

Supplemental argument: You will still be able to see what others are saying to the hidden poster which could be even more annoying or confusing.
Counter argument: Take a look at how Delphi Forums does it. You have the option of seeing a hidden person's post if you want to.

Final argument: Total paranoia from people thinking people have hidden them.
Counter argument: there isn't one. nothing can be done about personal paranoia

Yes please to hide poster.

Then when someone really doesn't care about a topic, but feels the need to keep repeatedly telling us they don't really care about a topic, we can hide them.

Its in their own interests. Best not to read it at all, than spend a whole thread going but who does that....Really????

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 01/11/2013 08:40

Tee can you clarify what you mean by a hide poster option please? I think I've got the wrong end of the stick Blush
I assumed you meant a hide poster option on a specific thread, so say if I was being a dick on this one you could choose to hide all of my very important posts, but reading through everyone else's replies they seem to suggest that it would just hide all of my posts on any thread?

BOF · 01/11/2013 08:42

Yes, Orange. It would be a (reversible) Twat Zapper.

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 01/11/2013 08:44

Can we call it a Twat Zapper?!

ouryve · 01/11/2013 08:45

Agreeing that the hide poster option worked wonderfully on Delphiforums. It made not rising to button pushing of the goady variety so much easier.

Tee2072 · 01/11/2013 08:46

Yes, it would hide the poster on all threads.

Twat Zapper is a perfect name.

Not sure how name changes would be handled and might be the tech reason it's not actually possible.

Look, this 'you just need a bit of self-control' stuff is all very well, but sometimes you get your back put up by certain posters because you have had particular horrible experiences that they trigger.

Suppose you've been a victim of DV and somebody regularly posts trivialising or disbelieving other people who post about it, suppose you were bullied at school for not having the right clothes and somebody regularly sneers at people for wearing the wrong shoes or whatever, suppose you're insecure about your lack of education and someone makes a habit of picking up spelling and grammar mistakes in posts.
Being able to rise above it all is great and kudos to those of you that always can, but sometimes that is a fairly privileged position to be in.

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 01/11/2013 08:55

I don't think it's a good idea then. Someone might be a complete arse on one thread ever, you might see them for the first time on that thread and hide them on the basis of that, when actually normally they are a good poster but you'd never know.
Maybe an option to hide certain posts would be more practical? Like you can on your dreaded Facebook timeline?

uncomfortablydumb · 01/11/2013 09:00

Yes please to hide post/poster. What Tee said. What BOF said.

To all who say I don't need it, I'm ice cool mature me Fine. Good for you. Even if the hide button is there (please!) you won't be obliged to use it. In exactly the same way that you say us lesser mortals aren't obliged to reply to goat/dy twats. Surely that makes everyone happy

Tee2072 · 01/11/2013 09:00

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have never had the urge to hide a poster from one post. It's usually a lot of posts over a long period of time.

OP posts:
sturdyoak · 01/11/2013 09:03

Yeah, but Turnip its great when you can show them up concerning their views and when they start back tracking, whoah victory dance!

Not that everyone feels in a position to do this, I know sometimes things are still too raw. Maybe I need to keep my fingers still from waving over the i-pad but I just hate it when I have hid a post accidentally, hiding posters would be awful. Maybe if it was not instant and you had to log in to do it, this would be OK.

BOF · 01/11/2013 09:04

But then you have to read them first.

I really don't think that people would just click Hide willy-nilly- who could be arsed? You'd save it for the very occasional persistently irritating bugbear types. I've been here a good while now, and I can only think of two or three who I'd want to use it with. Even then, frankly, I'd probably relent just so I could torment myself.

If HQ made it a deletable offence to gloat about hiding people, I dont see why anybody would ever need know. Other sites have this as standard, and it doesn't cause any major problems.

sturdyoak · 01/11/2013 09:05

I always found nemeses fascinating....in fiction at least and somehow MN is not quite the same as RL.

sturdyoak · 01/11/2013 09:06

BOF I click and hide mistakenly. Done this twice and it is very annoying. I blame the i-pad.

I don't have any great objection to a hide poster function, but I think it's a self defeating argument.

If you're too 'human' to simply ignore people or posts who rile or offend you, then really, will you be able to glide your eyes over greyed out posts with total serenity? I bet most people would want to know what was being said, particularly if they could see other people's responses.

You'd have to have super human will to simply pretend they aren't there. So ultimately hide poster will be pointless.

meditrina · 01/11/2013 09:10

I am against the idea.

I prefer the low tech approach of 'ignore poster' and report those who you think are breaking Talk Guidelines.

Tee2072 · 01/11/2013 09:11

It has just occurred to me that nearly everyone in my "man I wish I could hide posters" list has been banned from MN anyway.

Perhaps HQ is reading my mind? Or HQ wished they could hide posters as well.

One or the other.

SirChenjin · 01/11/2013 09:16

It's a fantastic idea. There are a few posters who are boringly predictable in their responses and never contribute anything more than a good old stir with the spoon.

Life is too short to continually read entire thread/ignore mad fuckers, so hiding them would wipe them from my MN and make it a far more interesting place to be.

reelingintheyears · 01/11/2013 09:22

I only have one who I might possibly hide, but then sometimes she's so screamingly hilarious in her delusions I probably wouldn't hide her.

But I get that the goading on the more sensitive topics might benefit from a hide button so yes, probably would vote for it.

If we get to vote.

NotCitrus · 01/11/2013 09:22

I would love to see a 'killfile' feature implemented on MN. Firstly to encourage people to ignore rather than engage with trolls until MNHQ get round to deleting them, but also because there are posters who post at best unhelpful comments on threads where people are seeking support - it's all very well saying users are all adults, but users include women who have just given birth, have newborns, sleep deprivation, illness... If we're arguing on the Bounty threads that women who have just given birth are vulnerable and need help to avoid conflict, surely the same recognition should be applied here?

Script to hide poster on MN

You'll need Mozila firefox;

addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/

www.edochan.com/widgets/mumsnet/

TunipTheUnconquerable · 01/11/2013 09:37

It used to work on Chrome without Greasemonkey, too; don't know if it still does.
