What mpg does your car really do?

AlexMumsnetCars · 10/04/2013 15:17

What Car? has revealed that more than 95% of cars it tested failed to achieve their official fuel economy (click here for the full story in Mumsnet Cars). So what mpg figures do your cars manage in reality? Include your car's model, engine, trim and age if you can.

Having done a rough calculation (14 year old car, so we have worked this out manually), we reckon it does 35mpg. Official is probably 40mpg.

Ford Focus 1.6 zetec, 14 years old (S-reg), 5 door hatchback, gone 125,000 miles (equivalent of 15 times round the earth, or half way to the moon Grin!) so reckon we are doing pretty well.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 10/04/2013 20:25

Scoffed I can't deny ours hasn't been great as the cam belt went 6 months ago and various other bits. It has probably been the worst car we have owned for sucking cash. But my friend has a petrol version and hasn't had a peep of trouble. Sometimes it is just bad luck.

It was a nice car to be a passenger in but dh says it was dull as ditch water to drive!

Guendaline · 10/04/2013 20:38

Renault grandscenic from 2011 with stop and start technology. Diesel engine. Was advertised as doing a whopping 60 mpg (and that's the main reason why we bought it). Instead it does around 40 mpg, 42 mpg if we're extra careful.Hmm

SlinkyB · 10/04/2013 20:41

2003 VW Golf GT TDi. Official stats say it should do 54mpg, which I can get if I'm extra careful, but I'd say 40-50 is average.

drjohnsonscat · 10/04/2013 20:46

Honda hybrid does 60 on the motorway but I'm never on the motorway so it's more like 25-30 around town on average.

northernmonkey · 10/04/2013 20:58

I have a 52 plate diesel, Citroen Zara Picasso and that does 45mpg

MrsShrek3 · 10/04/2013 21:10

Toyota yaris 1.3 daily running around 50mpg, long/mway distances 58-60+ Grin
I heart my yaris Grin

thereinmadnesslies · 10/04/2013 21:37

We've just got rid of an 08 ford focus diesel zetec estate. With careful driving the best mpg was 45, way below the published figures.

thishouseisashittip · 10/04/2013 21:47

Citroen c4 Picasso VTR+ 1.6 diesel semi-auto, 59 plate does in the low 50's on average. I know this cause my DH tells me the average mpg after EVERY journeyGrin

Lyftiduft · 10/04/2013 22:24

55 plate Nissan Almera Tino (mini MPV), 1.8 SE petrol.
Averaging 35mpg, it hates the cold and short journeys, and running the air con. So basically this stupidly long winter has made it guzzle petrol. It does 38-40ish on longer journeys in the summer, woooo! Good car though.

memphis83 · 10/04/2013 22:31

2004 ford cmax 2.0 does 48 mpg (diesel)

Little car- Peugeot 306, Y plate, 2.0 ltr engine, about 45mpg on long drives.

Big car- Mazda bongo N plate, 2.5 ltr engine, diesel, about 20mpg, 26 when on motorways for any distance. Not so crap in comparison with some on here which is surprising. Tax is a killer, £215 a year Sad

mummytime · 10/04/2013 23:39

Honda Jazz about 30mpg if just used in town, 50 mpg on long journeys.

charlieandlola · 11/04/2013 00:23

2011 Mini One Diesel. 50-60mpg depending on whether I put the Aircon on or not, and keep to
70 on the m way. Has Stop start which also helps but freaks me out .

Volvo XC90. - 35 mpg average - not bad for 2.5 ton 7 seater the size of Africa.

BackforGood · 11/04/2013 00:27

Think I'm going to put a 'watch' on this, to refer to in the future when we next change our car.
Am shocked how much some of your bigger cars are doing Smile

beanandspud · 11/04/2013 00:33

Honda CR-V, 2.2l diesel (61 plate) does around 40mpg which I'm quite happy about. I do about 25,000 miles a year which is a real mix of city/motorway driving.

MirandaWest · 11/04/2013 00:43

05 VW golf 1.9 TDi
Always does over 50mpg unless a very short journey. Generally about 53 or 54mpg although sometimes nearer 60mpg which is satisfying.

Bilbobagginstummy · 11/04/2013 03:43

Honda Jazz 1.4, 2010.

Officially: urban 42.8, extra urban 58.9, combined 51.4.

Bilbobagginstummy · 11/04/2013 03:46

Oops!

I get about the urban figure: I sit in traffic a lot on a supposedly rural commute and get about 45mpg. On country roads I can get about 55mpg when tooling along; bit less on the motorway.

So not a million miles off but the "combined" figure isn't what I get due to nature of most of my driving.

NightLark · 11/04/2013 06:35

Renault grand scenic 10 plate, about 34mpg but we do live in a very very hilly area.
Little 02 yaris with 1 litre engine, no idea but after 7 years I still forget which side the fuel cap is as it is rarely at the petrol station.

BabylonReturns · 11/04/2013 06:38

Officially we should be getting 42.8 mpg on our 53 plate vw touran 2.0 tsi 140bhp, but we're actually getting an average of about 54, so I'm happy with that for an old nail of a car!!

BeckAndCall · 11/04/2013 07:36

2010 diesel SMAX does average of 47 mpg all journeys, but last long motorway trip of round trip 600 miles did 57mpg.
About twice what the previous petrol Galaxy did.........

Hulababy · 11/04/2013 07:57

Dh's Golf R is lucky to reach 20mpg most days! On longer motorway drives it can go more, but not sure much more!!!
