MNHQ Why is the Sponsored Discussion (aka thinly veiled advert) for CO alarms still up and running?

When the opening post has failed spectacularly to point out that carbon monoxide deaths can be completely avoided by tent campers by the very simple solution of NOT TAKING ANYTHING THAT BURNS INSIDE YOUR TENT.

I have messaged you several times now, and yes you have told me that you will look into it but the thread is still running and it sends out a very dangerous message.

Here is the advice (again) by the Camping and Caravanning club. They say " do not rely on a CO monitor inside a tent or awning to keep you safe ".

Please can you take heed of this by people who know what they are talking about.

The camping community do not want to see any more deaths because of people bringing their BBQs inside or even into the porch areas of their tents. The solution is NOT a CO alarm. It is leave things that burn outside and well away from your tent.

Please, please can you amend the op in the thread to make this clear.

Thank you Smile

Obviously when I say leave I mean keep closely supervised things that burn outside your tent.

i do agree, Slub, i thought it was a very odd message to send out.

Campers surely have 'common sense'?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 29/05/2012 10:30
Confused
Slubberdegullion · 29/05/2012 11:18

Olympia what do you mean? Camping and common sense all to often enough do not go hand in hand, which is why incidents like the recent, tragic CO death occur.

EauRouge · 29/05/2012 11:26

Olympia- we're planning to go camping for the first time this year and we'd heard about the CO deaths. Obviously we'd read not to take barbeques, camping stoves etc into the tent BUT I hadn't heard that you are not meant to rely on CO alarms. Since reading the links that Blu and Slubber posted on the other threads I've decided not to bother buying one.

I think it sends out a dangerous message to new campers that they can rely on these things to keep them safe, it might leave them thinking that it's OK to bring camping stoves into the tent if they've got an alarm in there.

Thanks again Blu and Slubber for posting about this. Lots of people are taking up camping for the first time and they need to know how to keep themselves safe.

Slubberdegullion · 29/05/2012 11:55

No worries EauRouge, and thank you for posting on here too.

The big push by the C&CC and ukcampsite at the moment is to warn campers about the dangers of using BBQs inside tents, as they produce CO even when they are working 'normally'. They have been the causes of the deaths this and last year and the only message that should be going out is never to use one inside or in the porch of your tent.

The debate over using camping stoves inside tents is as old as bf vs ff Wink but as a faulty stove can produce CO, and as it is an invisible and odourless gas, and as CO alarms aren't designed to be used inside tents I stick to cooking outside. That way I reduce the risk of setting fire to my tent as well.

Excellent. I see there has been a statement. If it could be moved to be part of the OP that would be great so it doesn't get missed.

Many thanks mnhq Smile

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 31/05/2012 00:53

hmm.

do we like the fact that the mn camping checklist has a CO detector on it? i don't.

LateToTheParty · 31/05/2012 09:39

Sorry it was me that asked for it to be added. I hadn't realised they aren't suitable for use in a tent. I started taking a carbon monoxide detector camping after hearing about a camping death where it was thought that the CO had come from a neighbouring tent or caravan. I thought that was particularly sad and worrying because while you try to ensure that your own kit is safe, you don't have any control over what other people are doing. The detector should probably be removed from the list then, to save from lulling anyone into a false sense of security.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 31/05/2012 10:41

yes, that sounds like an idea, like you say more from a 'false sense of security' POV.

Tee2072 · 31/05/2012 13:31

Sandy, I don't want to tell you how to tell you how to do your job okay, I do, really but linking back to the thread in question without explaining why you're linking back (in this case to show that the company in question has clarified their position and agrees with what this OP is saying) is pretty useless. And, really, a bit lazy.

sorry Blush you're absolutely right, Tee.

We could have been far more helpful in our post. [hangs head]

As Tee has rightly pointed out the link takes you to a post by KatieB at MNHQ.

In this post the company in question clarify their position.
