Recently, there have been quite a fwe Beyond The Pale comments posted very late a night.

Could you advise us on how best to deal with them?

We obviously report en mass, but atm they seem to stand for several hours and obviously can cause serious offence to posters.

Is there a way of dealing with this more expeditiously so these posts are seen by fewer people?

OP posts:
QuickQuickSloe · 05/04/2012 23:11

I've been thinking about this all day. One of the posts last night was so very disturbing I wondered if it should be reported to the police. I don't really know how this all works Internet thicko but I always thought that ip addresses were somehow traceable. Is that true?

LoopyLoopsIsTentativelyBack · 05/04/2012 23:12

I think I might have missed last night's offering. :s But tis a frequent phenomenon.

OhChristHasRisenFENTON · 05/04/2012 23:12

Er......

night, and their ip address tracking certainly deterred any further posts. Wink

There is Original HelenMumsnet who has been here for aeons who is Queen of TrollHunting

And there is NewGirlHelenMumsnet who i think is now OtherHelenMumsnet who looks after all the insight with AnnMumsnet and helps with all the surveys and product tests.

I've not managed to get a bollocking yet!

Must try harder

Solo · 06/04/2012 03:01

If a thread is suspended due to troll and many reports, then all troll needs to do is post abuse on lots of threads and Mn will be very quiet...be far better to blow up suspend the troll me thinks.

heliumballoon · 06/04/2012 03:24

Surely MN is big enough now to pay for someone to respond to reports around the clock? I must admit I had assumed that was the case, based on my experience of their efficiency in removing reported posts at 'standard' times.

I had always pictured something like a fire station, with Olivia resting, playing pool, eating pizza etc and then a klaxon going off and her leaping up, sliding down a pole and into action!

CaptainJACKSpareribs · 06/04/2012 04:59

I'm going to watch this thread as last night's trollery had me Shock and horrified.

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 06/04/2012 05:10

The first night 'it' came to play it was dealt with earlier than yesterday's.

I don't like tge idea that a troll could effectively suspend mn by posting on tons of threads far better for tge user to be suspended. Or even dare I say new users cannot register in tge muddle of the night? Would stop some they'd have hopefully fucked off moved on somewhere else rather than come back and preplan.

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 06/04/2012 05:21

I really big doh moment, guess it depends what/how tge overnight shift work but what about modification post on site stuff could tgat trigger an alarm?

Sunshinenow · 06/04/2012 08:43

How about a programming rule that, if out of hours, more than say, 15 people report a post the that individual post is 'suspended' pending review. I.e the post comtent is replaced with a standard message and a link to the talk guidelines, But the whole thread is not disabled.

There could also be a linked secondary rule that if and individual user acount has three suspensions within an hour their account is temporarily suspended.

This would provide an almost automated way of removing very offensive troll ish posts in the out of hours time.

EasterBummy · 06/04/2012 08:55

I partly agree sun but if the whole thread isn't stopped surely the poster can just come back and continue to spout crap on the same thread?

Better to just remove it completely but maybe there's a way to "freeze" the thread before MNHQ get around to remove it? By "freeze" I mean stop any more posts and like sun suggested, replace the OP with a message from MNHQ...

Actually that all sounds like more work than just removing it!

(For MNHQ)

[bugrin]

Sunshinenow · 06/04/2012 09:09

That' where the second rule kicks in. After two or three automated 'suspensions' their account will be suspended automatically.

It will be releatively quick to do 10 or15 reports (crowd wisdom), for the very offensive posts. Within minutes they would be gone.

We all know the difference between the simply contentious and the trollish vile posts.

After review they could always be reinstated my mnhq. (btw the numbers / thresholds suggested are arbitrary. Mnhq will have a better feel for suitable triggers).

Sunshinenow · 06/04/2012 09:13

Their account and ip address should be suspended. It is possible to use a proxy, but your average pervy It type troll will surely run out of patience and wank time for the evening sat at their pc.

EostreAngelofchocolateeggs · 06/04/2012 10:22

I'm committing the mn sin here of not having read all the posts, so I don't know if this has been suggested. On another site I use when someone reports a post the content of the post disappears and 'This post has been requested for review', or something like that, appears, until the post has been dealt with by the site admin.

PinotCantDoEasterNamesSoGaveUp · 06/04/2012 11:26

Rebelen is my favourite.

That's a combo of Rebecca and Helen.

An HQ mash-up.

RebeccaMumsnet · 06/04/2012 12:15

Tech are looking into some spizzy way (is spizzy better than snazzy?) of dealing with this ishoo.

Generally, one of us is around, even in the wee small hours to catch um. In the holidays we are a little thinner on the staff front so it's not always possible.

Don't tell OliviaL [buwink]

p.s. I prefer Helecca Pinot [bugrin]

FruitShootsChocolateEggcitedly · 06/04/2012 12:21

Actually Spizzy sounds a bit like something you shouldn't Google

Spizzy Ishoos....ewwwww

Eggsits · 06/04/2012 12:25

Not sure I like spizzy [buconfused]

I have never reported anyone, or being reprimanded, or deleted.
