Hi all

We're looking for a top-notch Java Web Developer to join our Tech team and wondered if you know of/or are one.

The job involves writing concise, efficient, maintainable web applications using Java. Detailed knowledge of SQL, HTML and CSS is also required and familiarity with Apache Velocity would be a bonus.

Previous commercial experience is necessary and there is also the possibility of progression into project management and supervisory responsibilities.

Tea and biscuit consumption not essential. Grin

The role is office-based, five days a week and is a permanent position.

To apply, or for more information, please email [email protected] by Friday 16 March 2012, attaching a CV and cover letter.

Best

Ooh ooh
Definitely no working from home?

StealthPolarBear · 22/02/2012 16:32

Sorry to be a pain but can we have some idea of salary?

LapsusLinguae · 22/02/2012 17:26

I am nothing remotely to do with IT - but I noticed this - and can't help feeling very sad that MN would advertise a job as "office-based, five days a week". Surely this would mean than MN wouldn't meet its own family friendly company criterion. Surely this sort of job has some sort of flexibility in it?

GrimmaTheNome · 22/02/2012 17:50

As someone who's been writing technical software for 25 years (not Java!) - from home for the last 15 and extremely flexible hours - 'office-based, five days a week' does sound dinosaurish.

My OH would fit that criteria perfectly but we no longer live in London and he wouldn't want to work there 5 days a week any more. It's a shame because he has worked remotely for the BBC and Channel 4 in the not too distant past.

magpieC · 22/02/2012 20:24

Giving the benefit of the doubt - could saying "office based, 5 days a week" just be a poorly worded way of saying "full time role stuck in front of a PC so no gallivanting around the country/world"?

Or is it really locked in the cellars of MN Towers for 5 day stretches ;-) ?

BIWI · 23/02/2012 09:51

Office-based? Have they knocked down the shed then?

DarrenMumsnet · 23/02/2012 10:38

Thanks for your comments. We take on board all your points about family friendliness and, in our defence, we should point out that the two most senior members of our Tech team have such family-friendly terms, they're based overseas! We always try to make MN jobs as family-friendly as possible but, essentially, it's become clear we now need a developer who is here in the office to deal with day-to-day business, help guide and advise, and be the lynchpin between our senior Techs and more junior members of the Tech team. As well as doing their own coding.

Me! I love Java I do and what else was there? Oh yes Apache Velocity, I'm up to level 5 already, not that I like to boast you understand, but I whoop anyone's arse on that game.

HTML, yeah well anyone can make sentences bold and in italics can't they? see look I did that without even using YHA or whatever.

And I can work in an office, I've done that before. They are the places with swivel chairs and staplers aren't they? Ah the happy memories of the swivel chair racing competitions...........

So, when do I start?

AChristmasCarole · 23/02/2012 13:24

'Gin and Tonic Tester', I'd be there, office based or not.

TheRhubarb · 23/02/2012 13:36

My dh has even been to Java so that must give my application extra points right?

Sorry, but there's always the job of toilet cleaner if you like?

KnottyLocks · 23/02/2012 17:13

I drink plenty of Java and do a mean Apache sun dance.

You'd love me in the office 5 days a week.

KnottyLocks · 23/02/2012 17:14

Oh please give it to Rhubs. Grin

StealthPolarBear · 23/02/2012 18:31

Ok well since there's no chance of working from home I can confess to being not that experienced in java. I have .net though and am brilliant at sql. So go on - reward my honesty with a home based job?

Chrestomanci · 23/02/2012 20:11

It's advertised elsewhere on the web if you really want to know the salary.

NubblesStryverFlintwinch · 23/02/2012 20:28

If you want a business analyst I am available Wink

I haven't the right skills. I do know SQL, CCS and HTML.

I used to be a really strong Delphi and VB 6 developer before children.

I would a job in a couple of years time when I have perfected my knowledge of java and php and my children are bigger.
