Anyone else seeing things?

Twice now when I've hit post or refreshed a strange page has appeared. It looks like some sort of shopping page but it's in Korean or Mandarin or something.

The URL is www.Mumsnet.com and it usually disappears if I tab back. Any ideas what it is? Have you been infiltrated by Ninja purveyors of fancy goods?

Actually the URL might be www.Mumsnet.com/talk/

Right it's happened again. I've taken a screen shot but I'm on iPhone using safari so I will email the image to you.

I will upload the screen shot when I get in. Just so no one thinks I'm a sandwich short of a picnic because MNHQ has not come and posted on the thread to confirm I'm not bonkers

I haven't seen this. It's possible it's a virus on your computer or phone which is redirecting you while keeping the false URL displaying. XP had a virus once which did this to his internet banking log in page. URL was identical on my laptop, different page. He followed the link from google, it should have been legit, but it wasn't.

Hi KatieMortician

Sorry to be so slow coming back to you. We've been trying to replicate what you're seeing but we can't.

Unless anyone else is getting the same thing, we think it may be a problem your end, rather than ours. Sorry Sad

KatieMortician · 26/10/2011 18:10

I did get a reply via email thank you. I just don't want everyone else to think I see things that aren't really there.

Can iPhones get viruses? Shock

Also it says www.Mumsnet.com on the dodgy website. I'll post the screen shot on my profile in a bit.

Hi Katie, Quick note: the fact it says mumsnet.com on the dodgy site doesn't necessarily mean very much. If you were on wi-fi when you saw this, it's possible that the wi-fi router you using is compromised in some way, and is giving out bad name -> address mappings.

If, for example, there was something wrong on the wi-fi router that meant when you asked for www.mumsnet.com, you got sent to www.badplace.com instead, the server at badplace.com would know you'd asked for www.mumsnet.com and could easily put the mumsnet name in the page it showed you. You could try turning off wifi altogether on the phone (in settings) so you know you are going through the cellular / mobile network. If that fixes the problem, then the problem likely resides in whatever wifi network you were using when it happened. It would also probably rule out the notion that the problem is with the phone.

I don't want to alarm you, but if you are seeing this on your home network / router, it's possible that a virus downloaded on a PC has affected your home router. It might be worth running an anti-virus scanner on any PCs that are using that network. There are other things that could be causing it as well of course.

Are you still seeing the problem this evening?

BertieBotts · 26/10/2011 18:46

Yes phones can get viruses. You can buy anti-virus programs for them now, as it's become much more common in the last couple of years as smartphones have grown so much. If you go to somewhere like Curry's or PC world they should be able to advise (or try posting on geeky stuff?)

When XP was seeing a false lloyds login page, the address bar was displaying "https://www.lloydstsb.com/onlinebanking" (or whatever the actual one is) but the page he was seeing was different to me opening "https://www.lloydstsb.com/onlinebanking" - I had the normal lloyds login page, he had some dodgy page asking him to put in his full card number, pin number and all his security codes! In other words it was definitely not coming from lloyds itself but somewhere else, despite having the correct address.

KatieMortician · 26/10/2011 18:57

Hi thanks for that. I've not seen it since but I've only just got in.

I was on my home wifi that's a secure network. My laptop has had a full system scan between first and second instances and came back clean. I've also sync'd iPhone and laptop without anything being flagged up by McAfee.

Dh has been using the same wifi for work without problems and he has some very impressive fire wall thingy because he works for a bank.
