during your 2am offline thingy, backup or eating biscuits or whatever you get up to that shuts the site for a couple of minutes, could you possibly replace "post" with "save" so that morons like me don't get caught time after time with writing a thoughtful or long post and then losing the bloody lot when the "offline" message turns up instead?

I am quite sure this should deter me from posting at 2am but you can't teach old dogs new tricks and I must be thick never seem to learn

an automatic save would be more useful - say, everything that had been submitted in that 60 seconds was saved.
or something that's possible.

nickel - unless you are using Internet Explorer, Damian mentioned (perhaps in Jan/Feb) some s/w add on that saved what was typed into web forms.

I think sometimes mine will save if I press the back button.
