for us nocturnal mners, could you possibly come up with a 'save post' feature....

during your 2am offline thingy, backup or eating biscuits or whatever you get up to that shuts the site for a couple of minutes, could you possibly replace "post" with "save" so that morons like me don't get caught time after time with writing a thoughtful or long post and then losing the bloody lot when the "offline" message turns up instead?

I am quite sure this should deter me from posting at 2am but you can't teach old dogs new tricks and I must be thick never seem to learn Blush

oh yeeeeeeeeeeeeees. or at least flash up a blardy 'you have 60 seconds before mn goes offline' warning. i am at my most eloquent when you shut down. honest. and there's never any proof of my brilliance to be had. just me moaning for the next two hours and trying to remember what i'd typed.

empirestateofmind · 18/04/2011 02:24

Yup, this happens to me too. It is not just the nocturnals this affects. It also affects those of us in different time zones. I am 7 hours ahead of BST so my 9am or 10am is prime time for MN's backup.

I have found if I go back a page and then forward on my browser sometimes I haven't lost my post. I keep thinking oh should have copied that so I could paste it. But of course I never do.

Perhaps MN could do a popup saying "backup happening in 5 minutes" then we could save our post to the clipboard.

wonders if MN is down at the moment posts anyway

empirestateofmind · 18/04/2011 02:26

Cross post with Madwoman, both of us had the same brilliant idea

MrsShrekTheThird · 18/04/2011 02:31

ohhh, wonderful. But I want the egg timer to go with it Grin

I also spend aaaages trying to remember wtf I'd typed, usually pure brilliance of course Grin

Mrs Shrek Grin.

Earlybird · 18/04/2011 03:00

Yes please.

It is common (and infuriating) to write a reply/message, only to find that after pressing the 'post message', the site is offline for backup and the reply has vanished.

DiveBomb · 18/04/2011 03:03

Yes, yes, yes. Very needed.

MrsKitty · 18/04/2011 05:06

Yes please.

I've had a couple of those "Arggghhh" moments when posting on night-shifts!

thumbbunny · 18/04/2011 05:12

oh yes yes yes! Anything that means I don't lose pages lines of perfectly crafted post - it's infuriating! I know that some people manage to click "back" and it goes back to their post, but I can't - my browser updates and just chucks me out.

You have to understand, it's not just for me - think of all those poor MNers who are missing out on the benefit of my (and others here) brilliance and wisdom!!

LostInSockLand · 18/04/2011 05:14

3am actually when I am a genius...but no-one will ever know..........

MotherMucca · 18/04/2011 09:40

I am particularly witty at 2/3 a.m. I agree with the proposals set out above.

empirestateofmind · 18/04/2011 10:50

Mrs Shrek have you had any response from Mumsnet Towers?

MrsShrekTheThird · 18/04/2011 21:52

no, maybe they're waiting til 2am to surprise us

RachelMumsnet · 18/04/2011 23:23

Thanks for this suggestion (sorry - we're not going to be surprising you in the middle of the night though) i'll certainly put it to the team in the morning and see what folks think. Do keep posting if you think this would vastly improve your life and we'll get back to you.

MotherMucca · 18/04/2011 23:30

Yes, it would vastly improve my life!

I am an insomniac.

savoycabbage · 18/04/2011 23:41

Ohhh, yes it would be great. Save would be the best but a great bit flashing light and a claxon with a countdown timer would be far more helpful that nothing at all.

thumbbunny · 18/04/2011 23:45

well, perhaps not the klaxon bit, but maybe the screen could flash with a "warning! This site is about to close down for backup" sign?

savoycabbage · 18/04/2011 23:53

I would like my daughter to race in and say 'whatever is happening???' and then I would like to say 'only 49 seconds to shutdown' so that she would think that I was doing something important. I will need a siren for that. Grin

I could get on of those red telephones.

MrsShrekTheThird · 18/04/2011 23:54

well it would save me going off in a sulk Wink

BTW Thumb me ol' mate, my 'back' button doesn't save anything - I just get repeated "internet explore cannot find webpage" or some such with a naff globe thing Hmm I always wish I had a copy. It's only ever the good advice that gets lost y'see, never the mad ramblings of a nocturnal ogre!

OP posts:
PenguinArmy · 18/04/2011 23:58

It's called firefox

DoubleNegativePanda · 18/04/2011 23:59

It would vastly improve my life! Your stinking shut down for backup happens at 9:15pm my time, which is exactly when I have time to MN as DD is soundly asleep and DH is watching recorded crap I care nothing about. Can't count how many times I've nearly thrown my phone when I realize my post has vanished into the sodding site backup!

Before anyone points it out, yes I do realize that it happens at the same time every night. I just forget. Every time.

MrsShrekTheThird · 19/04/2011 00:00

PA - firefox doesn't save it either Shock ...not for me anyway

[more sulking]

OP posts:
thumbbunny · 19/04/2011 00:03

well, doublenegative - sometimes, just to be really fecking awkward, it happens early. That's seriously irritating!!

PenguinArmy · 19/04/2011 00:03

does for me if I press the back button
