McDonalds Ads - tell us how do you feel about them folks?

Good day MNetters,
We've been asked if we'd host ads for McDonalds, so we thought we'd ask what you think. Would you object to banner ads (ie like the one at the top of the page) on Mumsnet?
Let us know.

Oh yes, and if so you're worried about rainforests, shouldn't you be objecting rather more vociferously to Mark Warner holidays, in that right hand corner?

Or is it the fact that McDonald's/Greggs/Aldi is too downmarket that's bothering you?

southmum · 04/03/2011 09:59

I dont care, luckily I can make my own mind up about what I eat, not what some banner on a website tries to lure me into wanting.

HappyMummyOfOne · 04/03/2011 10:26

Why not, its not like anybody will be forced to eat there.

Its a site for adults and adults know that fast food has its place in diets and can make up their own minds.

The website is free, cant actually understands why MNHQ feel that they have to ask its members before accepting revenue given those members dont pay for use of the site.

If anybody leaves over the add, then new people will replace them.

MrsAlanKey · 04/03/2011 10:44

I quite like McDonalds. They do nice coffee. I wouldn't choose to eat there frequently but its very handy sometimes. I don't think its worse to eat at McDonalds than starbucks etc. Its not supposed to be a healthy balaced meal anymore than a 900 calorie upmarket coffee house panini is. Its a sometimes food.

I would object if the site was littered with terrifying clowns.

MackerelOfFact · 04/03/2011 10:51

Not a problem here. I don't think any MNer will be swayed on their current position on McDs by a banner ad, so might as well take their money if they're offering it!

FWIW I think it's very big of MNHQ to canvass opinion on whether they should accept advertising from certain companies.

looblylu · 04/03/2011 10:59

mcdonalds is great.

Its nowhere near as unhealthy as it used to be
(milk, carrots and chicken nuggets for a treat isnt going to cause an obesity epidemic)

They are fair employers

They are not overly expensive

They run a worthwhile charity

Happymeal boxes these days tend to have lots of proactive messages to the children (eg: exercise, recycling, healthy eating)

and anybody who doesnt like mcdonalds can just ignore the adverts. (frankly i cant think of anything worse than buying clothing from Boden...but you dont hear me crying about it Wink)

Anybody who would complain about a mcdonalds advert being on a website they visit needs a good slap :)

Can you restrict them to certain sections?

Such as the pramshed, chicken keepers, horse and hound areas? Chicken nuuuuuuuggets! Grin

Just keep them away from Education, Health and Chat, and we will be fine... Wink

kreecherlivesupstairs · 04/03/2011 11:59

I really can't see any problem TBH. i don't notice any of the adds unless they move.

Mumi · 04/03/2011 12:37

I never click on any of the ads anyway. Does anyone?

DamnYouAutocorrect · 04/03/2011 12:45

'You'll water down content to keep the advertisers happy and would start censoring threads eg. critical of McD.' I don't think this is fair. MN threads are littered with comments that are critical of advertisers, look what gets said on here about Boden! I can't see a reason to think MNHQ will give Maccy Ds special treatment. I don't go to McDs cos of the McLibel trial, but now I'm just showing my age Grin

Longtalljosie · 04/03/2011 13:16

Go for it. I think you're more than kind in asking us to be honest. You're not a charity and don't run on pixie dust. Charge them lots though

SeeJaneKick · 04/03/2011 13:24

Longtall..kind? Kind!? They're not kind! They're running a lucrative business! It makes sense to ask us what we think.

Longtalljosie · 04/03/2011 13:25

Oh come on, would you seriously deregister because one morning the words "I'm Lovin' It" or whatever they say these days were in a small box on the right?

SeeJaneKick · 04/03/2011 13:25

I click on some ads Mumi...

DamnYouAuto That's right!

MrsKwazii · 04/03/2011 13:27

Can you imagine the threads that would appear if we weren't being asked? And the extreme flouncing? And the Matthew Wright follow-up bollocks?

wonka · 04/03/2011 13:29

Nestle next?

Popolly · 04/03/2011 13:31

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

glasnost · 04/03/2011 13:52

McD's is not just any old dodgy shit food outlet. It's the daddy of all evil inhumane corporations. Has noone read "Fast food nation" or seen the film? McD's is plain WRONG on so many levels.

glasnost · 04/03/2011 13:53

If they start advertising here they could demand to see my details for those comments and sue my ass.

Eleison · 04/03/2011 13:54

I think you are undermining your case there glasnost. There is surely no reason to imagine that MN wouold cooperated in something like that just because McD was an advertiser on the site, is there?

LaWeasel · 04/03/2011 13:57

I don't mind.

MD's now, compared to MD's even 10years ago is a totally different company. It's unfair to judge them on issues that have been rectified imho.

FanellaFidget · 04/03/2011 13:58

I'm objecting, only because just seeing the name 'McDonalds' in active convos has got me thinking about a double cheeseburger and how much I want one, and because of this, I will, at my earliest convienience, purchase one.

balloonballs · 04/03/2011 14:00

Don't mind in the slightest.

glasnost · 04/03/2011 14:01

I was jesting eleison about the sueing scenario but your serious reaction makes me wonder........
