Question about the UKIP webchat...

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 24/02/2011 19:34

Why were all the links posted by Nigel Farage and the other UKIP newbies in a different format to normal?

They were in black type with a dotted line underneath and if you hovered over them it said 'click to see the full link'.

Is this a new thing? Or is it evidence they were in fact all the same poster?

I've seen that, and haven't read the UKIP conversation, so it's nowt to do with them. :) See below, I can do it too, I think...

(You just don't use the two square brackets needed for a hyperlink on MN.)

Poo, there was a dotted line in preview!

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 24/02/2011 21:05

I have never seen it before.

C'mon someone give me an answer and stop me going off on a conspiracy theory Grin

I've seen it on quite a few threads although only over the last couple of days.

bamboobutton · 24/02/2011 21:07

is it because the writing is on a different coloured background so the usual blue writing used to indicate a link doesn't show up??

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/02/2011 00:06

I don't think so, I've seen them on OP posts (which I have coloured green) and on white posts - and my own are pink... Grin

Agree it's just the last couple of days. Could it be connected to the "jumping screen", which seems to be related to bookmarking?

Check post 6 on this thread, by negrilbaby [[http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/behaviour_development/1158012-2-year-old-had-Tesco-lasagne-last-night-and-blisters-appeared-round-her-mouth/AllOnOnePage#24012165 here.]

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/02/2011 00:09

Ah ha! Maybe if you only put one square bracket? (Since I only put one on the end there...

I assumed it was just part of the site updates mn techs are doing...

LibraPoppyGirl · 25/02/2011 00:15

Nah, I give up too Wink

CaptainNancy · 25/02/2011 00:17

right- it appears to be where noobs inexpert linkers put URLs that are v long, MN tries to cut down the amount of screen space they are wasting by making it clickable automatically (some of these URLs can be 5 or 6 MN lines long)

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/02/2011 00:18

Ah, could this be associated with the famous MN "break" in any url they consider too long/likely to be dodgy?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/02/2011 00:18

Except that I was linking to an MN thread when it appeared.... Confused

LibraPoppyGirl · 25/02/2011 00:27

I've only every linked to something on ebay before, and it came out fine.

DamianTech · 25/02/2011 07:16

Hi all,

This was a feature added recently. Links that are too long are shortened so that they fit better on the page, e.g. www.example.com/this/is/a/really/really/really/long/link/

This does not apply to long links that are using the double-bracket syntax, e.g. www.example.com/another/semi/long/link/.

Incidentally, we also removed the character limit break so that links won't get pulled apart if they're over a certain length.

Aha! Thanks for the explanation. :)
