Can't you put up a very clear notice/tab saying this is basically the law as regards defamation, prejudice etc. If there are people who think its ok to say "I think Mr x conspired to murder Mrs x" you really need it.

We could end up going down the US road and having the whole potential jury cloistering thing they have there. That's why the press is restricted.

The term you are looking for is sequestered and they only do it for very high profile, heavy media cases.

MN is already working on changing the libel laws.

Now you're being patronising -- some problem with being asked not to slander at will?

Why would mn need to change the libel laws (were it in their power to do so) if we can express our opinions quite so freely within the law at the moment?

However I didn't know they were involved in such a campaign --- is that true?

Libel Law and MN

And I wasn't meaning to be patronizing, simply providing accuracy.

Some problem with being told you are incorrect and don't know as much as you think you do?

scurryfunge · 21/11/2010 19:17

I don't think anyone needs the law spelled out to them.
Ignorance is not going to be a defence for anyone.

The common sense advice is that if you are not sure about what you are saying is lawful, then look it up or seek advice.

Appletrees · 21/11/2010 20:45

Look back.. see how I have said Im not up on it. Just know you can't accuse people of murder with the defence that you're just expressing an opinion.

I can't believe there isn't a brief legal note anyway.

Libel laws are not too restrictive to accuse people of murder, apparently.

But you have to question what is likely to be the law to get an understanding of what is the actual law. No one needs lessons on not to murder, not to steal, not to damage something, etc.

If it is morally wrong, according to society's rules, then chances are there is a law against it.

Appletrees · 21/11/2010 21:19

Well yes scurry - you'd think.
