Facebook Nurse-in pictures and links being removed!

Is it possible this can be a sticky MNHQ?

There was an 'event' on facebook called the facebook 'nurse-in' yesterday. It's still kinda running.

Basically it called on ladies who are breastfeeding or who have in the past to post a picture of them nursing as their profile picture.

The purpose was to show that Breastfeeding is beautiful and normal and not sexual or offensive.

Facebook responded to this by deleting a lot of the pictures and the links to the event itself. I don't knownof they eventually intend to delete all these profile pics but haven't deleted mine yet.

It seems they deem these photos as offensive or obscene in some way.

I am absolutely outraged by this, they wouldn't delete a picture of a baby beig bottle fed would they?! (this is not an anti formula thread by the way, I don't care how anyone feeds their baby). I'm just annoyed that they are acting as if Breastfeeding should be hidden away and not seen. It's totally wrong!

I think we should have a campaign about it, it seems to be their 'policy' to remove such pictures and I think it should be changed. The more images of breastfeeding society see, the more it will be accepted and normalised te way it used to be and the way it is in many cultures around the world.

By the way, does anyone know how I complain directly to facebook?

Also I made this my status, if anyone wants to copy and paste it it is exactly the right length for the space provided:

outraged that Facebook sees fit to delete pics of nursing mothers. These aren't 'obscene', they're pics of babies feeding in the normal way nature intended. Breasts are over sexualised to the point it is ok to have them on men's mags in shops but nursing mothers have to hide away! Formula has only been around for about a century. We wouldn't be here if it weren't for breastmilk! Press like, show fb this matters!

He he at your friend, yes apparently it's not ok. Bikini clad ladies I'm sure would be fine Hmm

afaik the pictures need to be reported in order that they be removed, so while it might be facebook's policy to remove such pictures, someone is clearly taking offence to them (probably someone from peoples' friend lists?) in order that the policy be reinforced.

I wondered what 'feathered thing' was Grin

Ah so people have to report it, surely fb have the common sense to make a final decision on whether it is actually offensive or not. I mean people find all sorts of different things offensive but Breastfeeding shouldn't be one of them!

OP posts:
Dalrymps · 17/11/2010 19:56

Still don't understand why the links are being removed, I mean they just contain a stylised Breastfeeding symbol that can't possibly be offensive. If people clock on the link of their own free will and are offended by what they see surely that is their own fault.

I can't believe this is an issue, why would anyone have an issue with a baby beig fed? It's not right!

Hmm I really thought more people would be bothered about this...

well i am, but don't use FB

StealthPomBear · 17/11/2010 21:57

I have small booklets of snaps I took of the DCs in their first few weeks. First picture in each is a feeding one. Never occured to me it could be offensive
(well, until I noticed the acre of flab peeking out under my gown Blush)

Hi Dalrymps ,

Thank you for your post, do you have the link to the campaign page on FB so that we can take a look please.

TIA

MrsBuble · 17/11/2010 22:04

I can tell you why I'm not bothered about this-

Facebook are most likely to be removing the pictures in accordance to their guidelines on nudity, not because they are anti-breastfeeding.

And yes I know certain sluts women like to post pictures of themselves next to nude and nothing gets done about it but that's probably because nobodies reported it.

I also think that Facebook isn't the best place to start a breastfeeding campaign of that nature. Although I am a breast feeding mother who is not shy about doing it in public, I would not post a picture of myself on the web. Once you post it, god knows who will be able to see it and do with it what they will. And Facebook, plus any applications you use, would have permission to use it for whatever they like.

Dalrymps · 17/11/2010 22:46

Rebecca- I'll try post a link to the new page the ladies set up as facebook removed the 'event' nurse-in. The ladies were extremely offended by this so set up a new page called nursing is natural.

Mrsbuble- I understand what you're saying but facebook's comments on the subject are that it was removed for falling in to the categories ; hateful, obscene, threatening or attacking a group or promoting something. It is not any of those.

I disagree that fb is not a good place to have a campaign, I don't think Breastfeeding campaigns should be hidden away where they are 'understood' and are acceptable. I believe the more people see breastfeedig mothers the more the image will be accepted once again by society instead of mothers being told to put it away etc

Off to find the link...

Apparently this is not the first time this has happened on fb, see here

Dalrymps · 18/11/2010 08:15

This is an example of the pictures they have been removing. Hardly anything to see at all. What is obscene about this?

I agree that the photos removed show nothing obscene or nude so it is ridiculous facebook taking them down. They really need to give a better explanation or else allow them to be put back up.

But my point still stands, I would not want to post a photo of myself breastfeeding on facebook and therefore give them the rights to use that photograph in anyway they like. Just like I won't put photos of DD in the bath or me in a bikini, their are certain things I'd prefer left private.

Dalrymps · 18/11/2010 12:05

Sally- yes I see that, just joined that group! Doesn't seem that fb are taking any notice though!

Mrsbuble- it's up to you who you want to see your pics and I agree with that aspect of it. Suppose that's just a personal choice Smile

Strawberry! Sorry, don't know where I got Sally from, I blame ds2 for the extreme sleep deprivation!
