Like I say, I think the best way to protest is not to click on the link at all, then they won't get anymore traffic from here

moondog · 23/08/2005 21:33

moozo...it's important to know how the enemy thinks.....
(That's why I read the Telegraph religiously.)

But yes, by finding out what they think you are showing their marketing dept that you are "interested" in their product. That means they are more likely to want to advertise again on MN and offer them moolah they can't refuse.

Step away from the link, there's nothing to see

moondog · 23/08/2005 21:37

Eh?? Are Macdonalds jumping up and down about all the scrutiny their food has come under? Errrr,no, they're shitting themselves!

Can everyone not see that there is no criticism being made of anyone's decision to breastfeed or bottlefeed?

The problem is that as it stands, it is against the law for formula companies to advertise milk fro babies under 6 months. Fact. Whether we think it is right or wrong. However, Milupa are trying to get round this by appearing to offer advice on breastfeeding. Stand back for a minute and think about it. Why on earth would they persuade a mother to keep doing them out of profit by breastfeeding? Of course their aim is to promote their product.

We all feel very emotional and defensive of our decisions. It is a personal topic and it's hard to keep our feelings out of it. The problem is with the company twisting the legalities, not any individual's choice on how to feed their baby.

If anything good comes of this, it will be a whole lot more of us paying our subs. Only found out how to do this tonight. Cheque is on its way!

moozoboozobillynomates · 23/08/2005 21:41

Moondog, that's right, but this thread is every marketing manager's dream. I wouldn't say Mcds have come out of things well, but as a result of negative publicity, they have inroduced "healthier" options to their menus, and as a result people have continued going there.

I exclusiely breast fed each of my 3 children for a year each. I did buy some ready made formula to give them periodically a bit in a cup every now and then as I was getting ready to give up breast feeding. I was not pick about the brand just picked up what ever was nearest to me when I stopped by them. I'm not upset about the milupa advert because I think the issue is still the breast feeding message. If you do an nct course my experience is that it is pushed positively, however other extollers of the benefits of breast feeding I found to be almost tyrancial. Time and time again I came accross breast feeding mums who had given in to the idea of breast feeding rather that embraced it. the difference being coercion and choice respectively. It also amazed me how many people had been given the idea that it was going to be easy - hell no one tells the babies about latch!!! There is great breast feeding advice out there but often as a new mum your hormones are all over the place, you can be borderline neurotic, all the anticipation in the world doesnt prepare you for this/these wonderful but scary person(s). The brand like Milupa do have a legitimate place in the market. But no amount of advertising in the world is going to get them the business of a breastfeeder who is given the right foundations in the first place and support to stay on the breastfeeding wagon.

CountessDracula · 23/08/2005 21:43

moondog it's because of some drugs I am on which don't cross the placenta but do come out in breast milk.

JulieF · 23/08/2005 21:43

I know I am totally insignificant in comparison to Tiktok but I too am going to be leaving over this ad. I have been deliberating for a couple of weeks over it and she has given me the impetus to have th strength of my convictions.

This is not providing factual impartial information it is blatantly trying to persuade breastfeediners to formula feed.

I was a formula feeder and still accept this is totsally wrong. In my role as a peer supporter I see a lot of vulnerable women such as I was being persuaded by this type of marketing.

I feel this is a sad day for mumsnet. Tiktok will be missed.

moondog · 23/08/2005 21:47

ghost...reread your last sentence. The fact that such a set up is still a pipe dream is the reason why there has to be fairly robust restrictions on advertising formula.

JulieF,disagree with your comment that formula feeding is 'totally wrong'. This is a very sad and harsh thing to say about yourself.

EEk, better clarify before I go, formula feeding is not wrong, this advert is wrong

moondog · 23/08/2005 21:50

Gotcha! Wasn't sure what you were saying JulieF.

OP posts:
robinia · 23/08/2005 21:51

I don't think JulieF is saying formula feeding is wrong, I think she's saying the advert is wrong. Hope I'm right.

CD, just seen your reasons for not BF. I had the same to but didnt find out until DS was born

ghost · 23/08/2005 21:54

Moondog, appreciate where you are coming from. Sadly I feel its a case of chicken and egg. Perhaps we should be asking why its so difficult to get a clear and decent breast feeding promotion into operation. Cant remember the last time some one said did you see that fantastic breast feed advert. Childcare is all positive reinforcement - The breastfeeding message and delivery seems to be a police state in comparison.

edam · 23/08/2005 21:57

Has anyone contacted the MN team about this? I know Justine's on holiday, but surely someone's around?

hunkermunker · 23/08/2005 22:00

CD, I'm sorry if I upset you. I agree that there should be more impartial advice about formula than currently.

Could the NCT could provide it? After all, Milupa are giving breastfeeding advice. The world has truly gone mad!

I'm sorry - being flippant - I really am sorry if I upset you.

This ad has annoyed me a lot.

WideWebWitch · 23/08/2005 22:10

I'm sorry tiktok is leaving too. I agree, having looked at the ad, it looks editorial because of its position and so on on the home page. Plus Aptamil are trying to set up 'an internet community' which is all very doubtful imo. While I understand that mumsnet have to make money and accept ads to do so, I do think taking cash from Aptamil is pushing it tbh. As Colditz says, their 'advice line' is like a smoking cessasion advice line run by Benson & Hedges. And if advertising to mothers didn't work and sell formula they wouldn't do it so of course the aim is to flog more formula.

Tiktok I hope you'll reconsider but I can understand why you feel this way.

Has everyone on this thread subscribed btw? 10,000 unique users a MONTH here and mumsnet still needs to accept ads from formula companies? Something wrong there.

lemonice · 23/08/2005 22:36

Would milupa buy Mumsnet lock stock and barrel if they could..clearly yes, but they would find I assume that the concrete quickly became an essence, just because of the excess of commercial interest not necessarily the bf v bottle feeding issue...

katierocket · 23/08/2005 22:38

indeed www, I think that hits the nail on the head.
