Kitchen for a 2 year old

Looking for a kitchen for DS's 2nd birthday. Any comments welcome. Looked at lots on line but it's not the same as seeing them IRL. Looked in Toys R Us today at a couple but was sorely disappointed at the cheap bits of c*p they expect you to pay £60 for!!

there is a nice wooden cooker at Early Learning Centre £50, or their plastic one is nice - £55

Katemum · 14/08/2005 23:15

We have the ELC plastic one, it is three years old now and not doing too badly. Still in one piece.

Skribble · 14/08/2005 23:30

Make sure what ever you get is big enough as they grow out of the little ones so quick.
I have always liked the little tykes ones very robust, easy to clean. Had them in a couple of nurseries i worked in and they last for ever.
country kitchen

My daughter has a gorgeus wooden one, she has had it for almost two years now, through two house moves and countless kids playing with it and still looks brand new.

will try and find it online for you.

TwinSetAndPearls · 15/08/2005 00:16

it is here

Dd has the sink, washing machine and cooker. I think we are getting her the microwave for her birthday
.

Jbck · 15/08/2005 21:44

We've got the Smoby Tefal one which is nice enough, but if I'd shopped around more I'd have got the Smoby one which you can have as 3 separate components so it fits into more compact or awkward spaces.
I think the wooden ones are lovely though if money is no object.

Nbg · 15/08/2005 21:46

My mum and dad are buying dd the ELC "sizzlin kitchen" for her2nd birthday. It's £55 and it comes with food and pans I think.

LilacLotus · 15/08/2005 21:49

my DD got a smoby tefal one which she's broken the fridge door off quite easily. i found it an awkward size and shape. looking back, i would have bought a different one.

Look on Ebay - there's an Ebay shop selling new wooden ones for the same price as the plastic ones. Can't remember exact link but look under toys and then wooden toy section. Do a search under kitchen, stove/cooker or sink as they do them as individual items. There's also a lovely wooden one on www.letterbox.co.uk. It's double-sided - has sink+washing machine on one side and hob/oven on the other with microwave above. It's around £100 but I imagine more durable than plastic. Their picture shows the oven door on the sink side so it looks a bit strange but that's obviously a mistake. Because it's double-sided it takes half the space and is about 18 inches wide, I believe. Also, ELC now doing lovely metal pots and pans and baking set, rather than the plastic ones.

Sorry, been away for a few days. Thank you all for your comments.

Skribble, DS plays with the Little Tykes country kitchen at his nursery, and your link gives a lovely picture, but they don't seem to be offering that kitchen at that site anymore and I'm having trouble finding it anywhere else. Do you have another link at all?

I like the idea of wooden stuff, but not sure we really have the room, or the money, for all the bit's you'd need.

I also found this , but wasn't sure if it's a bit over the top. Does any one have this?

BunnyRabbit - Little Tikes have stopped making that particular kitchen. They do a newer version now which does 'noises' !?!

Best place to try to get the original is Ebay. They are highly sought after, the bidding is usually quite fierce and secondhard they tend to go for around £70. However, because you're buying them secondhand, you usually get loads of extra with it. Some friends of mine got a job lot of play food, plastic plates, pots and pans, utensils, etc. etc..

bunnyrabbit · 18/08/2005 15:54

mmm well that's about 4 votes for the ELC!! It's at the top of the leader board at the mo....

Lilaclotus, funny you should say that about the door on the Smoby. DH and I looked a this one in Toyrus and both thought it was a little bit on the fragile side...

... just said to DH that, as I couldn't even find it on the Little Tykes website, the chances of them still making it were pretty slim. Damn really like it too. Not sure I like the new one as much. Don't mind buying 2nd hand if it's in good nick... I'll have a surf.

The LifeStyle kitchen is looking more and more attractive. Anyone any know if it's any good?

Just to put the cat among the pidgeons, one of my friends told me that a mutual friend's son was bought a kitchen and didn't play with it after a year.

My DM then suggested that the only reason DS plays with the kitchens at nursery is because other children do. The general consensus seems to be that boys will revert to the gender stereotype and not play with kitchens after there about 3/4.

IMHO this is complete b***ks, but I have no stats to prove this. Is there anyone out there who has bought a kitchen for there DS? Can anyone comment on how long they played with it?

id paid £15 for dd's at christmas from woolies its a smoby one and came with tefal pretend kettle/mixer/toaster and play packet..they still have it to my knowledge..very good bargain

MummyJules · 19/08/2005 20:47

How much can you budget for?

bunnyrabbit · 20/08/2005 13:36

Budget isn't an issue, I'm concerned now that no one else seems to have bought a kitchen for their DS. Am I the only one who thinks this is OK?

my SIL bought her son a kitchen. much to her DP's frustration as he thinks anything girly will turn the poor boy gay. heh. but he loves it and plays with it lots.

bunnyrabbit · 20/08/2005 13:41

Oh cool. Do you mind me asking how old he was when it was bought for him and how old he is now?

Haven't bought ds a kitchen, but have bought him a cleaning set - dustpan and brush, broom, mop, duster - and he loves it!! It is now his daily task to "dust" the TV screen. He also loves mopping the kitchen floor with me. He plays for ages at the kitchen in ELC and I would have no hesitation in buying him a kitchen - if only we had room for it! He's 2.4yrs.

LilacLotus · 20/08/2005 13:43

they bought it last christmas. he was 2.3 then and now nearly 3.

bunnyrabbit · 20/08/2005 18:07

thank you. Still dithering though. It is a lot of money to spend if he only plays with it for a year...... maybe we should get him a slide instead.
