Child's digital camera, with viewer display - is there such a thing?

Just wondering really.

Is there such a thing on the market? I know there are non digital child's cameras, but a digital one?

Something chunky and child proof
Easy to use - big buttons, etc.
A display viewer - so don't need to use a view finder and can see photos afterwards
Links to PC to download images

I am sure I have never seen such a thing TBH, but wondered if there was anything vaguely similar available?

I have never seen one either, but would love one, ds could take as many photo's as he liked. Also would not have to develop any films!!

Doesn't have to be huge quality as 1MG is plenty considering they would only ever get printed off on an inkjet printer at 6x4

Hulababy · 02/08/2005 18:19

Yep, qualilty of image not that important here either.

DD loves using my digital camera, and the camera on my mohile. I am amazed how quickly she has learnt to figure out the key buttons to press to work them. She will spend aged taking and viewing photos. But my camera was quite expensive and I am wary of her using it, especially outside. And similarly with my ohone.

Would love a child's one though.

digital but no screen

Hulababy · 02/08/2005 18:24

Think I would really like to have a disp;lay, as DD would struggle with a small tradional view finder. It is because fo the display she is able to take photos with mine.

Also think that one can only take 6 photos, which is very limited.

Maybe a lower end of the market convential camera would be a better idea. I couldn't see anything else on Google specifically for children

Hulababy · 02/08/2005 18:28

That is what I am now thinking.

A shame really - must be a gap in the market. I used to love having a little camera when little. But DD is so used to the digital cameras, it'd be great for her to have access to one more.

These aren't children's but are cheapish (40.00 -50.00)

Thanks for that; they look pretty good. Will investigate further.

I agree this is a gap in the market, I want to get dd one for Christmas. Having said that ds got a Kodak Easyshare one when he was 9 and finds it very easy to use. It's not chunky, and not terribly cheap, but it is a range that might be worth looking at.

bubblerock · 23/09/2005 17:33

We just got a free one at Comet - it's actually pretty neat 3.1mp with viewer, bag & leads etc.. you just go instore and ask to sign up with onetel for discounted calls fill out the form and they give you a camera!! You are not tied in with Onetel so if you want to cancel at a later date you can

We gave our camera to my Mum as I already have one but she had it up and running really quickly and said it's easy - has audio and TV out too! Will need to get a bigger SD memory card but they're not expensive and also a basic battery charger to take 4 AAA batteries to save buying them but really can't go wrong for free!!

HERES THE LINK

I know DS1 would love to have a digital camera, but there doesn't seem to be any kids' digital cameras out there with screens. I think the screen increases the cost, increases the battery use, and of course the screens break pretty easily. I'd want a kid's camera to be pretty hard to break. I'll keep looking ...

tamum · 23/09/2005 17:52

Again not suitable for very young children, but there's a Polaroid digital camera here that looks fairly sturdy (you can see the back if you click on "see larger image"). I should add that ds gets an enormous amount of enjoyment from the short video facility on his camera; if anyone's buying one for an older child I would definitely recommend getting one that can do this.

Hulababy · 23/09/2005 17:54

No, not found one yet. looking for Christmas really.

She still is really into taking photos though. So we may get her the chepest non-child's digital camera with view finder instead I guess.

MN is, as ever, as spooky as that weird bloke who hangs about in the dark with Yvette Fielding. DD will be four next month and MUST HAVE a camera. And one with a screen - children just don't get camera's without a screen, do they? 'What's the point of a camera if you can't see the picture?'

I did a big internet search. There's nothing for children. And she specifically wanted a pink one.

On Wednesday I bought a Konica Minolta Revio KD100 from my local Jacobs for £29.99 - it fits your bill. It's chunky (although not child PROOF) and seems simple to use, with a screen and links via USB. It's only 1.3M pixel, but that's enough for DD's purposes. It has a flash (which many of the cameras at the cheap end of the market don't). It's fixed focus and there's only a x2 digital zoom, but again that's good enough for a 4 year old. I couldn't find it cheaper on the internet and while you can get 2nd hand on eBay for about a tenner, people are asking silly money for P&P.

As for pink, I hope some Disney Princess stickers and a pink case will do the trick.

HTH

NotQuiteCockney · 23/09/2005 20:47

BBBH, they do make Bratz etc cameras ... but no screens on them. Very irritating.

I do think we'd want one with video capacities, I know DS1 absolutely loves a friend's camera phone that does video, he will do anything to be able to watch himself do a silly song and dance, over and over, on the phone.

Hulababy · 23/09/2005 20:49

That looks good.

LOL @ Pricess Stickers. I so know what you mean. I;d be doing the same

We use one like this at school. It's big and chunky, with a screen. You put a floppy disk straight in it and then put the disk straight into the computer.

Good for children

NotQuiteCockney · 19/11/2005 21:30

Anyone have any new news on this subject?

DS1 spent ages using a grown-up digital camera at a party today, and absolutely adored it. He took some good photos, too!

I want:

  • SLR, or at least a good viewfinder
  • capacity to view photos after they've been taken, on the camera
  • reasonably sturdy camera
Skribble · 19/11/2005 21:44

I am just going to get a basic camera with less featurea than a fancy one. Its actually FIL's one that he is getting, so getting it cheap .

Hulababy · 19/11/2005 22:15

Not found a specific children's one at all. DD just uses mine or the one on my phone for now. Might look at getting her a basic digital camera for her birthday if still interested though.

Why has nobody thought of this? Ds has taken to using his GPs camera to take pictures of their chins etc. It would be nice if he could have his own. But I agree it totally needs a screen.

rummum · 19/11/2005 22:28

Tesco's had some digital camera's today.. 3.1 mp I think they were about £35 ??

They had a pink and silver one if thats any help.. I didn't look closely but I'm sure they had the view thing at the back....

NotQuiteCockney · 20/11/2005 08:30

I only have boys, so plain is fine ...

I had a look online for "tough" digital cameras, but that pointed at £200-£300 ones, which looked lovely, but rather more camera than we need.
