What is your 5 year old ds' favourite toy?

I am looking for inspiration for ds' birthday for presents from us and relations. I think by the age of 5 they have so many things .... I wondered about a swingball set for the garden - does anyone know if they are any good? Also is the Imaginext batcave a 5 minute wonder? All suggestions gratefully appreciated!

ds1 is 5 and mostly plays with lego

bodiddly · 11/02/2010 14:47

does he build stuff himself or play with kits when made up? Ds likes us to help us make them then they tend to just sit there!

I don't think he'd be able to choose between...

lego garage
lego crane
lego lifeboat
lego digger
etc etc etc

(he may have even forgotten that he owns any toys that aren't lego

muddleduck · 11/02/2010 14:50

he makes them all by himself btw. sometimes if he's feeling very generous he will let us find pieces for him

bodiddly · 11/02/2010 14:54

ds seems to go in and out of lego phases ... he isn't really in one at the moment! He just doesnt seem to play with toys very much so am at a total loss as to what to get him!

The only other things that we have bought for him that were worth getting are his bike and his scooter.

For his next birthday my plan is to redecorate his bedroom which is getting a bit babyish. Everyone else can get him more lego!

Washersaurus · 11/02/2010 15:05

Umm...Lego, Playmobil Dinosaurs, his scooter (may upgrade him to Maxi Micro next birthday)

He does have Imaginext stuff but doesn't really play with it.

bodiddly · 11/02/2010 15:06

Ds loves making things but already has a fair amount of arts and crafts stuff. He has asked for a dinosaur knex kit he saw which my mum is giving him ... not sure about the rest of us though!

Playdoh? Coco Nutty Monkey is a favourite here

Washersaurus · 11/02/2010 15:11

Actually, someone gave us some edible playdoh for christmas that DS1 really enjoyed (made me want to barf at the thought of it though)

Bleatblurt · 11/02/2010 15:16

My 5 year old DS loves craft stuff. Just a box full of stuff to glue and draw and he'd be in heaven.

We have a swingball but he gets frustrated with it - still not got the hand eye control needed to play it properly (I don't think many 5 year old have).

OtterInaSkoda · 11/02/2010 15:16

Ds's favourites were (and still are, at 9) cars of any description and Playmobil, again of any description but by preference vehicular or animal related. He liked Lego and still does but is a player rather than a builder, iyswim, so Playmobil wins on that score.

taffetacat · 11/02/2010 15:23

DS is 6 but since he was 5 has been mostly playing with:

Speed Stacks
Scooter/bike/tennis racquet/football
Lego
GoGos
Match Attax
Doctor Who activity books
Cutting/gluing/sticking of any sort
Very very large rolls of paper everywhere he's covered in maths sums
Lots of pencilcases stuffed with colour coordinated pens, crayons, pencils, rubbers and numerous notepads

He is getting into board games, just started Monopoly and chess and draughts. Last year he was into Jenga, Operation and numerous other Orchard Toy games. I'm very, very, very glad we are over the Spotty Dogs game. And Snakes and Ladders. He loved that. Have hidden them both from DD (3). How many times can you play these games without losing the will to live?

bodiddly · 11/02/2010 15:38

what are speed stacks?
I was wondering about some new board games actually ... he is still playing the basic orchard toy style games .. maybe operation would be a good one to start with!

That is my fear with the swingball Butterball ... he is an only child so I thought it might be a good idea but I guess he is still too young!

sorry, only just came back to this!

he likes the kits, but he does get bored and want help.
then within the day they are taken apart and made into other things! so we tend not to buy kits now, just big boxes of assorted pieces and he will sit and play and play and play and build all kinds of stuff with it

thisisyesterday · 11/02/2010 16:00

games are good too yes, ds1 enjoys classic ones like snakes and ladders and stuff as well as more modern stuff. elefun is a big hit here

VengefulKitty · 11/02/2010 16:22

DS was 5 in Oct. He cannot chose a favourite if I ask, but we agree that he hardly ever plays with anything except:

Lego
Marble Run
Transformers figures
Arts and Crafts box

taffetacat · 11/02/2010 16:23

speed stacks are basically posh plastic cups that you stack up and down at great speed.

There is a speed stacking club at his school ffs.

see more of the madnesshere

I'd go board games though if you'd like to be involved. I tried doing speed stacks and DS laughed so hard he had a wee.

VengefulKitty · 11/02/2010 16:25

Oh yes, also, he loves Operation. Well, the frankenstein version that he has

bodiddly · 11/02/2010 19:20

has anyone tried the gx racers .. the cars on tightropes?

OP posts:
Washersaurus · 12/02/2010 21:17

I had to google as had never heard of them!

They look like Hotwheels which I'm not impressed with (and so have been hidden at the bottom of DH's wardrobe [evil grin]).

GX Racers seem to get terrible reviews on Amazon.

bodiddly · 13/02/2010 08:31

will avoid those then Washersaurus .. thanks!

JackiePaper · 13/02/2010 08:48

DS who is 5 and a half mostly plays with
lego
hornby train set
craft stuff

NoahAndTheWhale · 13/02/2010 08:55

DS is 6 and his favourite toys are lego and cars. Likes drawing as well (mainly vehicles).

He likes his scooter and bike as well and I am sure these will get used more when it isn't freezing cold (he would probably happily go it, it is me who gets cold ).

taffetacat I have to admit to giggling at your post about the speedstacks. That would probably happen to me too.
