SatNavs: hmmm

They're a bit weird aren't they? I asked it to direct me back from the tip today (two miles from home) and it tried to send me via the M25 (ie a journey of about 10 miles).

Am also finding the constant beeping very distracting. I don't break the speed limit very often so I don't NEED to know where the speed cameras are so STOP BEEPING AT ME

Can you tell I got one for Xmas?

notcitrus interesting that your dh has no sense of direction, and also has dyslexia... mine too.... is there some link perhaps?

SomeGuy · 05/01/2010 02:34

what brand and model of satnav is it? You can find out from that.

The other thing with satnavs is if you live in an urban canyon (city centre with tall buildings), the signal will be hampered.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2010 12:05

"if my way is blocked, i find another road that goes in a similar direction to the way i want to go. and read the road signs. then you can marry up on the map where you are!"

Hahahahaha Except, of course, on country roads with no road signs or road names.

madoldbat · 05/01/2010 14:35

I'd be fine without sat nav if the other side of the points of interest signs said "your house" for the way back.....

MayorNaze · 05/01/2010 14:40

country lanes have road signs!!!!! those teeny little black and white arrow ones that say things like "lower hodgington-bumley 2 miles"

plus there are shedloads of little hamlets and mini village type things that you can also plot your way from!

this is england, not the sahara - everywhere is really not that far from everywhere else.

well anywhere i have been is anyway.

i will never submit

SkipToMyLou · 05/01/2010 14:43

MayorNaze, you have obviously never been to East Anglia (Norfolk specifically). Whenever I try to get anywhere following roadsigns I end up looping the loop round the long way twice at least, I am convinced the locals do it on purpose to stop you driving through their villages!

MayorNaze · 05/01/2010 14:46

ok. i will admit that i have not been to east anglia.

but i would be more than willing to navigate round it using nothing more than a map and roadsigns if i had a reason to go there!!!

MonicaMoniker · 05/01/2010 20:07

SomeGuy, it's a TomTom XL. We don't have tall buildings around here but we do have lots and lots of trees (don't get a very good mobile phone signal either but maybe that's nothing to do with anything...). Will try using it in assorted places as I haven't given it much of an airing really - haven't got lost - yet. . Thanks for the advice.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2010 20:21

Mayornaze, I was there (wherever the fuck 'there' was!) in the car and you weren't. I was anti sat nav before then too.

MayorNaze · 05/01/2010 20:24

i am going to navigate my way off this thread now as i think i risk acquiring myself a rep of unreasonableness. and i'm quite nice really.

now which way was east anglia again...?

SomeGuy · 06/01/2010 00:30

the XL is fine, so only suggestion is to get an aerial.

Mobile phone signals come from local towers, GPS from a series of satellites orbiting the earth, so there's not really any connection.

MonicaMoniker · 06/01/2010 19:28

SomeGuy - Thanks and - you learn something new every day! Will look on ebay for aerial.
