What's the best highchair?

We are looking at a Inglesinga which is on offer at £109 (John Lewis £160) but can't see many reviews on it.

A lot of people seem to like the Tripp Trapps but I think our 7mo ds would slip around a bit much and I wanted one which was a bit more padded.

Any recommendations?

The Ikea Antelope always comes highly recommended.

Psdding is all well and good but it accumulates cr*p very quickly.

Deemented · 02/08/2009 20:01

Basic £14 quid jobby from Ikea gets my vote - especially if going down the BLW route.

Meglet · 02/08/2009 20:05

I started with a tripp trapp but after 2 weeks of fiddling about with the straps and ds not looking very secure I sold it and got a Chicco Polly. It's a plastic monstrosity but the dc's have both been snug in it, it can be pulled up to the table like the tripp trapp. It's just a bit gaudy and I have to hose it down on the patio to clean it every so often.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 02/08/2009 20:06

I love my Chicco Polly. I've had it nearly 4 years and 2 children and it still looks like new. Lovely and padded too so good for even the smallest tot.

norktasticninja · 02/08/2009 20:13

Not the Inglesinga Zuma? I got one of those for DD and I HATED it, so many nooks and crannies that filled up with food. It was truly awful.

The Ikea antilop is undeniably great, totally practical, cheap and easy to clean (although it does have a pretty large footprint). But, personally I prefer the Stokke Tripp Trapp. It's great to have DD right up at the table with us and it's sooo adaptable, my 8 year old niece still uses hers now.

Also we have an open plan kitchen/dining room/sitting room and I couldn't stand having to look at the Antilop all day . In an ideal world I'd use the Antilop for tthe first few months and then move over to the Tripp Trapp

Whatever you do don't get the Inglesinga Zuma. Seriously.

norktasticninja · 02/08/2009 20:18

If you buy it this will be you after 4 months of using it

VinoEsmeralda · 02/08/2009 20:25

We started of with the Tripp trapp but DS managed to topple it over resulting in a trip to A&E so we sold that one (only positive thing about it is that is holds it' s value well) and now have something similar but with an A-frame which neither of them have managed to topple over, think they are called Hauck Alpha III (5 years old now)at a fraction of the cost of a TT

IDreamOfJeannie · 02/08/2009 20:27

Another vote for the ikea antilop.

We probably would have got a Tripp Trapp if we could have justified the cost as they ARE prettier to look at.

But we only used the highchair for about a year anyway, DD moved to a stool when she was about 19 months old.

SJisontheway · 02/08/2009 21:01

svan highchair - similar to tripp trapp, but has the option of a tray with a plastic cover.

nicm · 02/08/2009 21:28

a handysitt? we had a big graco highchair to start with but it was a nightmare to clean!! now ds is in his handysitt and sits up at the table with us. it also folds really flat to store-i just hang it over the back of the chair when i don't need it and is really easy to carry with you if you're going to friends/family.

poppy34 · 02/08/2009 21:30

Another vote for ikea antelope here

nigglewiggle · 02/08/2009 21:34

I would recommend the Svan. It's on our second child and still going strong. Looks good too! Not cheap though.

meep · 02/08/2009 21:38

Ikea Antelope for me - you can put it in the dishwasher!

Cataline · 02/08/2009 21:40

Ikea Antilop without a doubt . We also have a Tripp Trapp which is great now DS is 2 and just using it as a chair.

berri · 03/08/2009 16:27

Wow, loads of replies, sorry for the delay in coming back!

Norks, I'm gutted you've posted that about the Inglesina Zuma - you know when you think you've made your mind up about something, but after reading that I think I'll have to steer clear!!!!

Seems to be lots of recommendations for the Antilop - are they able to sit up quite well in it? That was the main reason we liked the Zuma, he is upright pretty much (although it looked like a really big gap between him and the tray though...!!).

Aaargh, this is like choosing the buggy all over again!!

Antilop Get the inflatable cushion that goes inside it, although that is an extra £3 so be prepared to shell out that bit more...

Seriously, MIL gave us a huge more traditional high chair and it's still in the cupboard. We have three Antilops, home, my mother's and PIL. We don't use our one anymore as DD at 18 months now sits at her little plastic table and chair set to eat but she would fit in the Antilop for a long time yet. It's really not worth spending money on something that's going to be covered with pasta sauce and squashed broccoli or however you spell that evil green stuff...

norktasticninja · 03/08/2009 17:05

They can sit up really well in both the Antilop and the Tripp Trapp although you might need to use the bow up support cushion with the Antilop for a month or too. My vote still goes to the TT though (but the little cushions are a waste of money).

DD is pretty much average sized but she sat really bably in the Zuma, it's far too reclined and the seat is so big that at 10 months she was able to pull her legs up inside it and fully turn around. The seat also filled with food which then worked it's way under the covers and into the velcro She also had real trouble drinking in it because she could bend over so far backwards...

I could go on (and on) but I'll restrain myself I knew I'd hated it but reading that old thread brought it all back in graphic detail!

lynniep · 03/08/2009 17:16

yeah, antilop gets my vote too. its currently in the garage as DS now uses table and chair but will make its return when DS2 is ready.

Basically its easy to clean.
Thats all you need. You can bung it in the garden and hose it if you need to.

I dont see any need for reclining seats - I like the fact theres no footrest to push up on - I also cant see the point of baskets underneath and wotnot - all food traps.

They do them in red and blue as well as white now! (although on the website you can only get the tray in white - and can't buy that or the coloured chairs or the cushion online - only the seat)

I always thought it looked a tad uncomfy to sit on because of the lack of padding, so I got a bit of foam and covered it with a plastic bib - hence wipeable and removable. Did the job.

sunshiney · 03/08/2009 17:35

that Ikea highchair is the best and I have went through two other (much more expensive) ones.

it's not just cheap and easy to clean - the dimensions of it are good in terms of seat and tray.

it's best feature IMO is the absence of a footrest, meaning the occupant of the chair finds is difficult to get into a standing position.

sunshiney · 03/08/2009 17:39

"i have went" - oops!

pania · 03/08/2009 17:46

Also you can easily take the legs off the Antilop, so you can take it with you if you go away. It's very light (though sturdy).

mazzystartled · 03/08/2009 17:48

we have 2 tripp trapps, bothe still going strong, look great and have been great from 6months, easy to keep clean etc

but if i had my time again i would probably just go for the antilop

future design classic imo

Calbourne · 03/08/2009 17:51

Another vote fot he Antilop - I bought the Svan 2 years ago and it was never really stable from the beginning, then fell apart. Bear in mind this could've been the way we put it together, but I bought the Ikea highchair 4 months ago and wish I had found it earlier. It is so cheap, could you buy 2 and store one (the legs come off) for when little friends come to visit. Cleans really easily, fits at the table and is much more secure than alot of the others. Love it.

Our Chicco Polly stained like buggery (sorry) itw as awful. Nice and padded though.

Got a Kuster in the end, lovely thing, spacious, easy to clean, he climbs in and out by himself...not sure if cushions any use as we got it when he was big.
