Hello again - just been on the washer/dryer thread so thought I better do this one as well

We have lived in a lot of different rented property over the years so we have seen all sort of machines.

Basically, with washing machines, pretty much you get what you pay for in our experience.

Miele are best by a mile and should last 20 years but very expensive as a one off purchase.

Bosche are fairly good but a long way behind Miele. Makes like Hotpoint/Zanussi and other essentially rank with price and performance.

The cost of a washing machine is determined mostly by the power and quality of the electric motor. The better the motor the more expensive the machine.

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 09/05/2009 18:47

A Bosch one with a 1400 spin. Very happy with it but only had it 6 months so can't comment on long term performance however I read loads of reviews and also checked it out on Which before I bought and everyone was v happy with it. Shopped around online and got it for about £300 even tho rrp is £400.

warthog · 09/05/2009 18:49

miele. absolutely amazing.

norktasticninja · 09/05/2009 18:49

I've got a Miele and it is great. They really do last as long as EvenBetaDad says and are certainly worth every penny of the investment.

cocolepew · 09/05/2009 18:52

Hello again EvenBetaDad (do you work for Which? ?)

Isn't miele ££££££££££££ though? I'm skint.

Currys had a Bosch in the sale, the drum was a lot smaller but I was still tempted because I know they are well rated.

Apart from miele they are all pretty much of a muchness which is why the more expensive brands have come down in price.

I would consider getting something on sale (curry's had some great deals on Thursday) and see if you can afford their 5 year plan which guarantees you a working machine for 5 years. This is what I always do as with 4 dc and washable nappies our washing machines get hammered!

Apparantly even miele have opened a large factory in China recently.......

EvenBetaDad · 09/05/2009 19:08

cololepew - yes Miele are horrendously expensive but are a real investment rather than a retail purchase.

If you are on a budget, as others have said, the other sorts of machines are pretty well a much of a muchness. Worth paying a bit more for better spin speed if you can. Clothes will come out with less water retained in them if they are spun faster and so will take less time and cost to dry in the dryer.

[No not working for Which - just really obsessed with laundry equipment ].

EvenBetaDad · 09/05/2009 19:09

Sorry spelled your name wrong cocolepew

CarGirl · 09/05/2009 19:12

Just one thing about spinning at high speeds!!!

If you have delicate clothing which IME includes nearly all my tops made out of cotton mix/viscose/lycra you have to be careful about them not getting holes in them by doing a high spin speed and something heavy like a towel pushing the material through the holes in the drum which wears tiny little holes in them

I do neary everything on 900 spin and take it straight out when the cycle ends and don't have to iron save the 1200/1400 spin for towels and bedding and winter stick in the pants and socks for an extra fast spin because I don't mind if they look crumpled!

Bigger drum = poor items in one wash which is cheaper but only if you'll wait until you have a full load.

cocolepew · 09/05/2009 19:13

Maybe I'll keep lugging my washing to my Mums and save for a miele.

Thanks.

We bought the cheapest washing machine we could find in John Lewis as a week before moving into our first MQ, we were informed that "fully furnished" didn't extend to white goods.

Spent £199 on an Indesit, which has never given us any problems and is heading towards 7 years of age.

Sometimes wish it would breakdown as I have seen a very nice, shiny stainless steel machine that would match my new kitchen

norktasticninja · 09/05/2009 19:30

CarGirl - well, y' see Mieles have a weird special drum so that stuff doesn't get grated...

Seriously coco, it's well worth saving up for one, if you're really lucky you might find a second hand one somewhere. It's worth keeping your eyes open anyway.

Monkeyandbooba · 09/05/2009 19:31

Miele. fabulous.

CarGirl · 09/05/2009 19:34

Now if I'd known that I'd have got a miele, darn it have new machine being delivered tomorrow!

MintyyAeroEgg · 09/05/2009 19:37

I have got a Hotpoint Aquarius 6kg machine, 2 years old now. I will be pleased if it lasts 5 years. Only cost about £300.

The clothes come out clean. I can do all the washing for a family of 4 in 7 loads a week.

Tis a bit noisy (I think this is the Miele claim to fame, they are quiet) but only for a few minutes when it goes on to Fast Spin.

It has a huge range of different programmes and I only used about 4 or 5 of them .

EvenBetaDad · 09/05/2009 19:39

Glad to see you guys are all big Miele fans.

We are moving to a new rented place in a few months time and we have to buy our own washing and drying machines. We were planning on Miele so glad to see so many endorsements.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/05/2009 19:41

bosch -- it has a 1400 rpm motor.

Does this mean it has more power than my car

norktasticninja · 09/05/2009 19:42

Minty - 300 quid for a new machine every 4 or 5 years?

Monkeyandbooba · 09/05/2009 19:43

I'd marry mine, it's that reliable Miele carry parts for at least 20yrs, they are that sure of their longevity. When the dishwasher packs up will get a Miele then too.

norktasticninja · 09/05/2009 19:46

EvenBetaDad - Miele dryers are good if you can stretch that wee bit extra for one with a heat pump you'll save a fortune in the long run. Not many companies make them, ours is a Blomberg and I think AEG do one too. 'tis well worth looking into

norktasticninja · 09/05/2009 19:47

Erm, meaning Miele don't do one with a heat pump...

FlappytheBat · 09/05/2009 19:47

Are Siemens as good as Miele, as it was a S/S Siemens I was looking at to go with our dishwasher?

norktasticninja · 09/05/2009 19:50

Flappy - No, sorry they aren't. This is good though

FlappytheBat · 09/05/2009 19:51

Might have a bit of a problem with that model, doesn't match my kitchen

FlappytheBat · 09/05/2009 19:55

Have found it, wonder if I should become an MP so could claim for it on the John Lewis list

I knew you all said they were expensive, I wasn't expecting that kind of expensive
