my DD is 7 and we have lots of games!

Junior Articulate is good if she can read ok - you describe the word on the card - is nreasonably expensive though I think

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:36

monopoly (if you can stand it)
cluedo
chess
draughts
yahtzee
Uno
top trumps
cribbage
tantrix
dominos

Not all board games but similar

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:37

Rummikub

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:38

oh, why did I read this as something to play with her? It is a present itn't it

PandaG · 27/04/2009 22:39

articulate here

MerryPonymum · 27/04/2009 22:40

My DDs loved Ravensburger's Enchanted Forest - it's not 'intellectual' as such but the way you have to remember where the treasures are is actually quite challenging - a bright 6 YO could probably beat me at it

PandaG · 27/04/2009 22:43

Blokus is good - is more of a logic and spatial awareness game - you place your pieces trying to block your opponent and not get blocked yourself.

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:44

this is the tantrix mentioned earlier. I have it and ds1 (6.5) has liked it for a couple of years. I seriously want this version with the magnetic board and pieces - but it seems a bit extravagant when I have the normal version already.
Anyway I digress, most of my suggestions aren't really traditional "kids" games.

PandaG · 27/04/2009 22:44

oh yes, Enchanted Forest is good I agree. Takes quite a long time to play though iirc.

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:44

oh, have fancied getting blokus for a while - it is good then?

PandaG · 27/04/2009 22:45

but CS, a lot of the kids games out atm are a pile of pants. I love the fact my children can play grown up games with us now.

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:47

definately, have never really got "kids" games as such - too bloody boring to play with them. Though I regret ever introducing ds to monopoly (kids or not??).
Most things with ds are numbers based.

PandaG · 27/04/2009 22:47

we like it - is quick to learn the rules and not a long game to play - around 30 mins. Is better with 2 or 4 but you can play with 3.

Ingenious and Qwirkle by the same company are also very good - but Qwirkle is definitely more than £20. Ingenious may not be.

PandaG · 27/04/2009 22:49

oh if DS likes numbers what about Da Vinci code (would be suitable for bright 6 yo too Franny) Is set of tiles 1-9 black and white. you have to work out using logic and a bit of guesswork what tiles your opponents hold and forcethem to expose them. Is quick to play but good for exercising the brain!

Yurtgirl · 27/04/2009 22:51

I have NEEDED blokus and tantrix for ages

emkana · 27/04/2009 22:52

Enchanted Forest a firm favourite in this house!

MerryPonymum · 27/04/2009 22:52

I'm sticking by Enchanted Forest as my top choice as it's such a nice game, but for a really good family laugh, how about Rapidough (we've had ours years and still get it out at Xmas!)

It's usually about £25 so I'm not sure why this Rapidough is under £20

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:53

come and play tantrix with me Yurt

LilyBolero · 27/04/2009 22:54

blokus is fantastic.

ChasingSquirrels · 27/04/2009 22:55

ds1 had shut the box for his 6th birthday. It is lovely in lots of ways - and you can play it together or on your own. I didn't think he would really like it but he does.

Yurtgirl · 27/04/2009 22:57

CS - I NEED the magnetic set dont you think?
I hate the name though, it sounds like something out of the karma sutra
