Baby gift you can't get in the USA - any ideas?

My brother and his wife are expecting their first baby. I'd like to get them something useful that none of their friends in the US will have. Any suggestions? Ideally something I can give my parents to take over when they go to visit.
So difficult these days to buy something unique when you can get everything everywhere!

Marmite.

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 20:28

Hello!

hairtwiddler · 27/04/2009 20:29

Very handy - now be serious and get googling! Oh, and hello back!

I'm not very helpful, am I? How about British comedy DVDs for those long nights feeding? I'm sure your DB would be up for that, or is his techo wizardry so good that he downloads everything?

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 20:31

Make something, maybe, if you're feeling up to it? Homemade stuff definitely unique.

CarmenSanDiego · 27/04/2009 20:32

I'm in the UK and really miss Monsoon. They don't deliver here, so maybe a nice outfit?

I second the comedy DVDs but you have to be careful with regions.

CarmenSanDiego · 27/04/2009 20:32

Erm, in the US even.

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 20:32

Oh - decent chocolate!

Earlybird · 27/04/2009 20:33

People in the US generally don't have/use baby gro-bags. I've always wondered why, as they seem a very useful item.

hairtwiddler · 27/04/2009 20:33

Yes, may try to summon up enough energy to make baby blanket.
Can't find any grobags on any usa baby sites. Anyone know if they are popular?

My brother is too uber geeky for dvds I think! He downloads stuff...
Grobags might be a good idea then.
Green and blacks for feeding boost.
Outfit from monsoon also a good plan.
Feeling more inspired!

We couldnt find gro-bags to buy anywhere when we were in San Francisco.

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 20:37

And tablet. I made some recently - Nick Nairn recipe involving a little bit of white chocolate. It was FAB.

hairtwiddler · 27/04/2009 20:40

Now I know DB would like the chocolate. I think you should make him some hab..

Those bibs that look like neckerchiefs - am part of a parenting site which has lots of US posters and someone mentioned these and all the US mums thought they looked fab and were disappointed that they couldn't buy them over there.

They do have grobags I think - they call them sleep sacks. In fact AFAIK blankets are not recommended due to SIDS (whereas we have the feet to foot recommendation)

Habbibu · 27/04/2009 20:44

OK. When are your mum and dad going?

AtheneNoctua · 27/04/2009 20:45

I vote for gro bags. I'm American and send them home to friends/relatives. And maybe stick in some muslins. If they are bottle feeding, disposable bottles are nowhere to be found in the states. But might be too bulky to be practical for sendinging over.

CherryChoc · 27/04/2009 20:45

...erm, if you google sleepsacks, make sure you have your google safesearch filter on !

Baby not due until 1 September, and they are going around then. Plenty of time hab. Plus you need to come to my house and get your present. Strange piece of kitchen equipment here with your name on it.

I'm not sure I've seen those bibs Cherrychoc - any links?

Many thanks for all these helpful posts by the way.

I have just googled and the style of bib is called "Bandana Bibs" - there are a few brands, DryBib and Skibz seem to be the biggest ones though there are cheaper copycat ones. (the Skibz site has a gallery though it is a bit smug, lol) They are good for dribble and posset catching (I don't think they would work as weaning bibs!)

kitkatqueen · 28/04/2009 00:36

What about starchild shoes?? Hand made in uk..

www.starchild.co.uk I think...

CarmenSanDiego · 28/04/2009 02:08

Green and blacks fairly easy to get here. Marmite and similar are available but expensive.

Oh! Next don't deliver here either, so that might be another option.

hairtwiddler · 28/04/2009 07:57

Thanks folks. Shoes a good idea too...
