Help me sort out my laundry problems (oh soooo dull!)

CountessDracula · 28/04/2005 14:55

OK should be shot for such a dull thread BUT....

I very stupidly bought a massive basket for all my clean laundry to go in. I am rubbish at ironing, do bits as I need them then when it really starts to piss me off I send it all off to the ironing service! As a result I have a massive pile of clean laundry and can never find anything. Part of the prob is that dh has about 4000 t shirts which he never wears, so my first job is to get rid of those I think.

What I think i need is something that will separate my stuff, dh's and dd's. It lives in the spare room so has to be presentable and reasonably big as I know that it will continue to pile up as I just don't do ironing except in cases of emergency.

I know you lot will be able to sort me out!

And I regularly chuck wine down my neck and chat on mumsnet.

CountessDracula · 28/04/2005 16:31

Also don't have drying machine so much harder ironing crispy clothes

OP posts:
mears · 28/04/2005 16:31

I don't do it every night - DH has done it the last 3.

mears · 28/04/2005 16:31

Don't you use softener. I only use drier if it is raining.

CountessDracula · 28/04/2005 16:32

no am allergic

mears · 28/04/2005 16:33

Have to add that I am almost orgasmic at being so organised with the washing. How sad it that?

JanH · 28/04/2005 16:33

Use Surcare fabric rinse and GET A DRYER.

Problem solved. Next?

mears · 28/04/2005 16:33

Comfort pure too? Boots hypoallergenic?

CountessDracula · 28/04/2005 16:37

if you read thread you will see i am trying to get some f**king chippie to sort out my cupboard so I can fit the bloody thing in and then I will get a dryer!

Have tried all those fab conds they do me in

OP posts:
mears · 28/04/2005 16:39

Get your dryer nd sit it in any old place just now.

CountessDracula · 28/04/2005 16:40

What in middle of bathroom? Or kitchen?

I don't want to!

Anyway that is an excuse I am just lazy and I am NOT spending my evenings ironing and nor is dh

OP posts:
JanH · 28/04/2005 16:40

Missed the f**king chippie part, sorry. You could still get a dryer while you're waiting! Only woven lineny cottony things need ironing then.

JanH · 28/04/2005 16:41

Snap, mears!

Middle of f**ing sitting room, wherever! Spare room with piles of clothes????

CountessDracula · 28/04/2005 16:44

We both wear shirts to work so that's 10 a week
I am not going out looking all crumpled so tshirts need ironing too.

Anyway will need to drill huge hole in wall if am putting elsewhere it will be a mare

tbh I don't really care I have plenty of radiators but I will need one for the summer when it is raining.

Not piles of clothes, just one huge basket of them!

You can hang the hose out of the window temporarily. Honestly tumble dried T shirts don't need ironing if you whip them out and on to hangers halfway through the cooling cycle. (Need to air dry a bit before tumbling though.)

CD, why not get an ironing service to come and collect the specific stuff you want ironed once a week? You just need one of those big ironing bags - dump it all in there. It can be delivered back to you usually the next day, or day after. It's usually a minimum of 20 items, so no problem there.

If your cleaning lady wants to iron other stuff, that's not impt work clothes etc, then that's still fine.

Once you get your dryer, then you can rethink your strategy .

I know what you mean about ironing - I loathe it and am crap at it. Lost count of the number of things I've burnt (mainly dh's best shirts - whoops, there's a surprise ).

PuffTheMagicDragon · 28/04/2005 17:00

Yes, condenser dryer - fab, no holes required.

wilbur · 28/04/2005 17:01

CD - I think you and I inherited the same housework gene, the if-I-ignore-it-it-might-go- away approach. Sadly, this seems to be falling apart for me under the weight of 2 children, soon to be three, and a husband who is blind to household issues. I am planning on implementing a system any day now..... Anyway, to answer your original post - Ikea do a set of stacking boxes that are supposed to be for recycling that can go one on top of the other, but have a hinged flap lid so you can get stuff out or put stuff in without disturbing the other boxes. They're called Sortera and cost £10, look here They are not hugely pretty, but not horrid either, just plain.

I would also say chuck as many of dh's t-shirts as poss (I made mine do this a couple of years ago and it's been a huge help, he had millions). If you were really ruthless you could find out if there's an ironing service that will pick up from his office and make him deal with his shirts and work stuff.

PuffTheMagicDragon · 28/04/2005 17:04

Like those boxes wilbur - have bookmarked them as part of my ongoing obsession with storage issues.

CountessDracula · 28/04/2005 17:07

wilbur thanks they look great!

Now, have to conquer my ikea allergy - why oh why don't they do online shopping??

OP posts:
wilbur · 28/04/2005 17:17

Puff, they were brill in our flat for recycling which had to be stacked in a closet as kitchen was open to living room. CD - there are companies that will buy from Ikea and deliver to you, but for 3 boxes it's not really worth it. Go on, take a deep Swedish breath, you can do it. Best go late evening one night, and you'll be in and out v speedy.

misdee · 28/04/2005 17:19

i'd love ikea online. had to trek down to the store last week to get my sofa, and then pay for them to deliver it anyway. would've been easier if i'd be able to go online and order it, and then i wouldnt have overspent on extras for my girls bedroom.

the boxes wilbur linked to are wuite large, was looking at them as possible way to sort out recycable kitchen waste.

JanH · 28/04/2005 17:19

Is that £10 each?
