Is the Tripp Trapp worth it or would I be as happy with a Redkite or BabyDan wooden chair?

I really need a new high chair for DS2 (7m) and am quite in love with the Tripp Trapp, but they are still really expensive on Ebay. (I suppose them holding their value is a point in their favour?)

Anyway, just weighing things up on Kiddicare and dithering, and wondering if anyone can offer me some advice - do they all do the same thing?

Ikea Antilop. Less that 15 quid, a breeze to clean and comes apart so you can take it to familys houses. Can't go wrong fwiw, my friend had the tripp trapp but got the ikea one after she had tried ours. The tripp trapp does look lovely though.

Cheers Frustrated - had one of those for DS1 but he's lanky and grew out of it very quickly. Really want a wooden one as they're so much easier to clean (DS2 threw up on the one we have last night and it's plastic, hard to clean and the sponge seat is really unhygenic)

We went for the Babydan - couldn't really see the point of paying more for the Tripp Trapp. DS is coming up to 3 and still uses it all the time. The only problem with it is that he drags it around and uses it as a stepladder to reach all those places he shouldn't!

bohemianbint · 07/04/2009 10:18

tarte - are you totally happy with it? Does it adjust so they can keep using it until they're quite old? I think with the cushion too it comes to about £80, whilst the Stokke with the baby set is £142.

We're a bit skint but that's why I really want to make the right decision, am hoping DS will have the chair for years and years, in which case I don't mind paying a bit more for the right chair, IYSWIM. But also don't want to shell out if the babydan is as good.

I have a natural tripp trapp one i could sell to you, CAT me if you're interested.

HolidaysQueen · 07/04/2009 10:20

I was tossing up between the Ikea Antilop and the Tripp Trapp. We figured we might as well try the Antilop as it was only a very small amount of money to lose if we hated it (chair is £10 and the tray an extra £3 i think). It was wonderful, so we never had to buy the Tripp Trapp!

Antilop can be thrown in the dishwasher, and is quite stylish compared to most high chairs. I also like the fact that we can remove the tray, so he can sit right up to the table with us like the Tripp Trapp, or we can put the tray on if we want to contain his mess!

I do still like the Tripp Trapp but I couldn't really justify the cost after finding out how good the Antilop was. I know the Tripp Trapp grows with the child, but we will probably buy one of those wooden seats that fasten onto the chair if we need something intermediate for DS when he is too big for the high chair.

bohemianbint · 07/04/2009 10:22

Sorrento - thanks, that sounds good, how do I CAT you?

The babydan adjusts in just the same way as the Tripp Trapp. As I said, DS is nearly 3 and there is still growing room ie lots of seat and foot adjustment space left. We have been very happy with it.

If you click the envelope next to this message that should come through to me.

I love the tripp trapp except for one thing - once your kids get big enough to be interested in climbing down from the chair in the middle of a meal, you can't get them into the baby set. You have to sort of bend their knees backward. I'd have gone for an Antilop for DS2 if we hadn't had so much success with Tripp trapp for DS1.

So... depends on the kid!

Also, I see the stepladder thing as a positive boon. It's a very stable place to stand to help with cooking etc.

Sorrento · 07/04/2009 11:06

i've cat'd you instead

East Coast do a wooden one with a tray and adjustable seat as per the tripp trapp, £65 (i think) from kiddicare.com. really good chair.

oysterpots · 07/04/2009 20:33

My Tripp Trapp from when I was wee has only just given up the ghost. A nice thing to be able to pass on through the family

Hulababy · 07/04/2009 20:38

We have a Tripp Trapp and it was by far the best buy of DD's babyhood. Got it when she was 5 months old and it is still in use now, now as a chair, and she has just turned 7y, It looks good, is still in excellent condition and is so sturdy.

Have never understood the need for having a tray. Always wanted DD sat at the table with us.

Have used it with DD plus a number of visiting babies and toddlers and never had a single problem with it. Never had any instaces of it being pushed over, etc.

I do think the TT looks way better than the cheaper versions personally, which was important to us when we bought it as our apartment was open plan.

Tummum · 07/04/2009 20:43

I have 2 Tripp Trapps for my 2DCs and am soooo glad I bought them. They are now 4 and 2 and are still using them and will do for a while yet. The other thing I like about them is that the step thing that kids put feet on are good to use for when the kids are 'helping' cook etc.

My only piece of advice would be not to bother with the padded cushions - they get covered in crap very quickly and are difficult to put on and off and are really not worth it.

We have a tripp trapp for DD and I agree with Tummum - if you do go ahead and get one, don't bother with the cushions. It is SUCH a hassle removing them to clean! On another note, if the chair hadn't been given to us as a gift for our DD, I would have happily gone with the Antilop or the East Coast one.

usernametaken · 08/04/2009 12:12

We have a Tripp Trapp for DD (age 4), she is refusing to give it up when #2 comes along so we will be buying another one. I cant recommend them enough!

trixymalixy · 08/04/2009 12:21

Our tripp trapp was a present, otherwise we would just have bought an antilop, but I think it is fab. I'm hoping the kind relative who bought the tripp trapp for DS will buy another one for baby no 2!!

trixymalixy · 08/04/2009 12:22

Oh and I'l fourth or fifth the advice not to bother getting the cushions.

notyummy · 08/04/2009 12:28

We have an east coast one and it is fab. 2.8 d still happily using it to get to the big table now the 'high chair' table removed.

bohemianbint · 09/04/2009 10:10

Can you believe am still dithering about this? I really like the Tripp Trapp, but for an extra £50ish? Hmmm....

Quick qusetion TT owners - is the harness essential for a baby?

OP posts:
andiem · 09/04/2009 12:34

I have a trip trapp and a cheap tesco rip off one and tbh the tesco one is just as good and it is easier to clean. I do use a harness because ds2 just climbs out onto the table etc if he is not strapped in but I just use a chaep boots harness on both
