Is the Tripp Trapp worth it or would I be as happy with a Redkite or BabyDan wooden chair?

I really need a new high chair for DS2 (7m) and am quite in love with the Tripp Trapp, but they are still really expensive on Ebay. (I suppose them holding their value is a point in their favour?)

Anyway, just weighing things up on Kiddicare and dithering, and wondering if anyone can offer me some advice - do they all do the same thing?

this is the one from tesco but I got it for £29 discounted

trixymalixy · 09/04/2009 12:59

I wouldn't get the harness. We have pretty much never used ours with DS and he's over 2. The catch on it is really difficult to undo.

CMOTdibbler · 09/04/2009 13:02

We never used the harness for DS.

BackinAction will match any price you can find, and beat it, so have a look at their website.

I love our TT - it is so solid, and DS sits at the table really nicely in it, plus he uses it to wash up at the sink, do cooking at the side etc etc

I have the Babydan one and it's great. I've used Tripp Trapp's at friends houses etc and can't really see the difference. DS1 is still using it age 2.5 and I want another one for Ds2, but Dh is being mean and says no!

I also don't bother with the cushions

ohdearwhatamess · 09/04/2009 13:17

We have a TT. Wouldn't buy one if I had my time again. PITA to clean. I feel like I waste hours of my life each week cleaning the damn thing and scraping weetabix off with a paint scraper, and it still always looks horrible.

Not convinced ours will be used beyond toddlerdom. Ds1 preferred to use a proper chair once he got to 2 years old. I expect ds2 will do the same.

Harness unneccessary imo (likewise cushions).

bohemianbint · 09/04/2009 13:48

Thank you for all the advice!

Well, have ordered a TT for better or worse. (DH just told me to do it to stop this ridiculous indecision of mine driving him up the wall!)

We have two Tripp Trapps for 2 ds's who are now 9 and 5. They have been one of our best buys and once they are ajusted for an older child, adults can sit on them too. To be honest if we could have afforded it I would have liked 4 so they were just used as ajustable chairs for anyone rather than high chairs. My eldest ds now uses his to sit as his desk in his bedroom and the youngest still has his at the kitchen table. I also sit on them sometimes myself and they were really comfy when I was pregnant.
I can't really see that they are any harder to clean than any other high chair to be honest. In my experience weetabix sets like concrete on most surfaces!
I think if you want a chair that they will use for many years they are a great choice. HTH

We never had the harness but we did have the cushions. This stopped her wiggling around so much, but now we don't ever use them.
They are really comfortable even for adults to use. They adjust very quickly and they look fab!

I would recommend a harness, the one time that I didn't harness my 14month old dd in was the time that she climbed out of it onto the kitchen table while I was wetting a flannel to clean her up with

Another vote for East Coast here - we got ours second hand but am buying a new one for DC2. Easy to clean. I loved the Antilop too but alas DC2 is a heffalump and am afraid it will be tipped over .

Northernlurker · 12/04/2009 18:52

We have an antilop and so far it's been very, very stable. I was hanging my nose over the Tripp Trapp too but in our old house we needed a folding model so I got the very cheapest sort from Babiesrus which was fine for a year and now we have the antilop which I love. It looks great and does exactly what you need it to. I think the Tripp Trapp is definately worth the money but it's not money you have to spend iyswim!

Vamonos · 12/04/2009 19:07

Another HUGE vote for the Antilop - DD is nearly 3 and still in it (she is smallish though) - has used it non-stop since about 5 months old. It's so stable and easy to clean, and also supports her arms well when she's drawing etc.

We bought a Tripp Trapp a few months ago thinking it would do her once she outgrows the Antilop and we've really hardly used it, we should have just gone straight to a booster chair or something.

The Tripp Trapp is so much messier (we're using it without the tray or restraint) and she's actually fallen off it a couple of times. In their blurb it says you can use it without the restraint from around 18 months I think, but she wasn't safe even at 2.6.

Vamonos · 12/04/2009 19:17

sorry just read thread properly and seen that not only have you already gone ahead with the TT, you've already tried the Antilop!

Hope it suits - it is a nice piece of kit and probably more suited to some DCs than others
