Talk to me about range cookers (gas & electric ones)

Am about to build extension which means I will be venturing into purchasing all kinds of goods I have never had to before (as have always lived with whatever kitchen was in house we bought).

I am looking to buy a range cooker - approx 1000cm wide. I would like at least 3 ovens (elcetric) and 6 gas burners.

Amy recommendations on what to get? The prices vary considerably, but not sure if the quality does too.

I have a rangemaster, elan I think, I have four gas hobs plus two wok burners, two largish ovens and a seperate grill, I love it, cant tell you much more, will try and find a link.

www.homecareappliances.co.uk/prodpage.asp?ProdID=546 this is it, i got it from applianceplanet.co.uk which was the cheapest at the time, they pass over the order direct to aga and aga arrange delivery and aftercare, excellent service.

SpaceTrain · 24/02/2009 08:55

That is good to know clueless. We have been looking at Rangemasters (but silver/stainless steel ones) - I didn't know they were connected to Aga.

i have got a rangemaster - we inherited it with our house

it has a big gas oven and a smaller electric oven as well as 5 burners - it is the smallest in the range i think (plus a gas grill)

it is really excellent - can cook huge quantities at once although it took me a while to get to grips with the gas oven

brimfull · 24/02/2009 09:15

we have this brittannia one only two ovens but it is fab. They do them with all sorts of different combinations and sizes.Very solid and reliable.
My friend has a Falcon that is also really good.

SpaceTrain · 24/02/2009 09:19

I hadn't seen the Britannia ones, so I will take a look at those - thanks.

Ruby - I am never going to have a gas oven again. I just cant cook properly in it. Well baking is the issue actually - I had a panicked post at the weekend when baking a cake and the middle just would not bloody cook!!

Falcons are the bees knees but expensive.

WouldYouCouldYouWithAGoat · 24/02/2009 10:01

i have a fairly ancient rangemaster, fantastic. sil bought a smeg which was v. shiney but doesn't work v. well.

SpaceTrain · 24/02/2009 10:09

I have just seen the price of the Falcons. They are indeed expensive!! But I suppose it is a good investment.

A friend has a reconditioned Falcon, ie secondhand. It's still stunning. She's a food scientist and exceptional cook so expects the best! Maybe try googling?

Dottoressa · 24/02/2009 13:46

We've got a Stoves one. It cooks well, but the quality is rubbish - there's something wrong with the drawer, and the knobs are very cheap and nasty. Plus if you try to clean them with Cilit Bang, all the pictures come off, which makes cooking somewhat tricky.

We inherited a Stoves one in our house - all our little diagrams have disappeared too It's OK but I wouldn't buy one. The fan oven is VERY hot (have to turn it down at least 20 degrees compared to fan oven recipes) and it cooks/burns more on the left.

I'd go for the best I could afford (as with nmost things in life!) - I'd love a Falcon

brimfull · 24/02/2009 15:06

A mercury is what I would have if I had the dosh. They have them in JL where I drool over them.

SpaceTrain · 24/02/2009 15:48

I think I might try to stretch to splashing out on a Falcon then. I might have to buy a cheaper wine fridge to be able to afford it. But its for the good of the family I suppose!

Thanks for all the advice. Oh, and two ovens and a grill would suffice, so I'll consider those configurations too.

We have a brilliant Rangemaster Professional in stainless steel. it's one 90cm wide so has 5 burners (including wok burner) two ovens and a separate grill, plus a sit-on cast-iron griddle. The Professional does come in larger sizes (100cm and 110cm) with more rings and bigger ovens.

SpaceTrain · 24/02/2009 15:55

Linney, that's the one I had been looking at originally (the 100cm one). Good to know that you rate it so highly. I will compare it to the Falcon ones.

I'd ditch the wine fridge and go for the best Falcon I could afford

Then sacrifice other food and drinks in the normal fridge for white wine space, or just stick to red wine (put it on the radiator in v cold weather to warm it up)

SpaceTrain · 24/02/2009 19:06

PMSL at red wine on the radiator!!!

if you can blow the budget go for one of these
everhot they are the dogs bollocks Imo

SpaceTrain · 25/02/2009 12:39

The everhot do seem good, however I am not really a fan of the "traditional" style. Maybe if I was going for a less modern style kitchen.

Thanks for the recommendation though

I'm still really liking the Rangemaster ones.

Loopy & Linney - did you consider the Toledo as well as the Professional? And if so, what made you opt for the Professional?

Thanks Loopsy. Interestingly on the sites I have been looking at the Toledo is more expensive.
The other main difference seems to be the burners, as the Toledo has a griddle plate, but I don't think I'd use that.

For me it was price. I found a brand new, still packaged Professional on eBay for £899.
