If you could have a Stokke Xplory or a Bugaboo Cam, which would you choose?

Purely hyperthetical broodyness pondering, but if I had another baby I would go straight for the lust-after pram, instead of going through a different pram every few weeks to see if I could find one I liked as much (never happened). Everyone seems to have the Cam, but hardly anyone has an Xplory, why?

I would definitely get the Xplory if money were no object. I pushed a Bugaboo (not sure if it was a cam though) about in a shop and didn't like it, was too heavy.
Never actually seen an Xplory though.
Maybe not many places sell them?

Pawslikepaddington · 01/02/2009 20:31

I have seen a few, and nearly bought one, but dd was 18 mo so thought it wouldn't get the use-have been lusting after them ever since. Oh if only I could have another dc (not just for the new pram, I promise )

xplory is a real doozey.heavy, hard to maneouvre.bulky when folded.not good in parks a mall pram.nice eye candy but not good all rounder

PigeonPie · 01/02/2009 20:35

I've got an Xplory and just love it. It's fantastic to push, both DS1 and now DS2 love being high up and looking at everything and talking (well jabbering in DS2's case) at me. I can put a reasonable amount of shopping in the bottom and can push it with one hand so I can hold onto DS1's hand at the same time.

Stokke are quite choosy about their resellers I think, but you can find sellers on their website.

It is the only pushchair / pram I have had with two children and I wouldn't change it for anything.

Pawslikepaddington · 01/02/2009 20:41

May hire myself out as a sitting service/daytime childcare person, just so I can push lo's around the park in one (he he!) (dd now at school so defo too old!)

i had a stokke and it didn't fold well. was early model though and i sold it for what i paid for it.

very comfy for the baby but lousy off-road. i don't drive and walk lots so it was good for me as i used sling for non-pavement stuff.

bugaboo not as neat and not as easy to manoeuvre.

Flightattendant9 · 01/02/2009 21:08

Neither, having had over 50 different prams I would get neither. (Had a cam, not a stokke btw)

I'd get a Mountain Buggy. Cheaper and bloody brilliant. Get the Elite version if you have the dosh, the fabric is excellent.

Hulababy · 01/02/2009 21:11

SIL has a Bugaboo and I am not keen. It just seemed so bulky, not very light to push and I just wasn't impressed.

I like the look of the XPlory, esp for when in a city, but they are very expensive. Never pushed one though so no idea of any good.

slushymummy · 01/02/2009 21:42

I LOVE my bug, but haven't had pleasure of Xplory, so biased !

wontbepreggersagain · 02/02/2009 09:41

xplory any day- i love mine, purely for the looks as people say "bloody 'ell wtf is that?"

Very comfy and turns on a dime unfortunately can only fit one child in at a time so it doesn't get used all that often!

WEESLEEKITLauriefairycake · 02/02/2009 09:44

How can the Xplory be hard to manouevre - I saw someone turning theirs with one finger?

Are they really bad off road? - thought the wheels looked quite good.

Flightattendant9 · 02/02/2009 12:03

LFC you have to explain to me! Pleeease...the thing that puts me off the stokke, is that I am afraid it'll be top heavy and I'll knock it over!
Or that if it did manage to capsize, it'd be a long way down iyswim.

Is it a big misperception on my part?

ScottishMummy · 02/02/2009 16:12

i borrowed friend xplory for week, hated it,rubbish weels, rickety in park, heavy 13kg.driver wouldnt let it on bus

nvevr really had faith in the brand since got recalled with dodgy wheels

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 02/02/2009 18:08

I fell in love with the Stokke Xplory while pregnant and we were on the verge of getting one when we discovered that some had been recalled -- see here. It seems as though this problem has also occurred on the newer models so we ended up getting a Bugaboo Bee which has been great. I've also heard people say it is nowhere near as easy to fold or get up and down stairs - quite heavy - as it would appear on their website.

ScottishMummy · 02/02/2009 19:11

stokke have this staged photo of yummy mummy at tube entrance stairs, and gushing blurb of ease

hooey it feels like dragging a sherman tank.you can fold and tilt wheels allyou want it still weighs 13kg plus weight of baby

Qally · 02/02/2009 20:23

I have an Xplory and I love it. Our streets are narrow and traffic clogged, so the height is important to me to avoid fumes, as well as making life a lot more interesting for my DS and making it easier for me to talk to and amuse him on the move. I love that it faces all ways and lies flat. I like that it's so narrow - vital as our hallway is incredibly so. The footrest for the baby is adjustable so it's really comfy for them, and the lack of a kick-bar between the front wheels means my 6ft 3 DH can push it easily. (It also has a telescoping handlebar that goes higher than the Bug.) It's very light and easy to handle, steers beautifully, and I actually don't find it that heavy to pull up stairs - my GP is up lots - though my DS is only 3 months; when he's a toddler it may be hell! It also works as an adjustable highchair, which is great in cafes.

I thought a lot about it before buying, because they are so very expensive. But we don't own a car, so it was vital we had a good travel system. And the usual issue with Bugs and Xplorys - hassle of dismantling, and bulky size even when folded - is only of occasional relevance. I'd also not get one if we lived very rurally, as IMO it's an urban pram. Basically if you live in a compact city, and primarily travel on foot or by train, it's perfect. Resale value is excellent, too. If you are in the country, I'd get an all-terrain for local, and a second hand Bugaboo Bee for car use.

WinkyWinkola · 02/02/2009 20:30

I had an Xplory. I loved it. I loved its versatility and that the baby was so high up. But you cannot, despite the promo pix, shuttle it up and down steps like it is weightless. It's not possible.

Also its base means that you can't attach a buggy board to it. You can to a Bugaboo so when you have another baby, then it's a bit easier.

But in terms of style and innovation, I think the Xplory is brilliant.

Pawslikepaddington · 02/02/2009 20:31

I wish I could have both . They should have a rent a pram service, like they do with designer handbags. We're v urban, so think it would be the Stokke for me (keeps worrying about going to farms etc, but realised I go once a year with dd!) Am PMSL at me lugging it up stairs tho!

needahand · 02/02/2009 20:33

Do not get an Xplory. I did buy one for DD (3) when she was a baby. I had a big problem with it. Basically the bit that was supposed to hold the seat in position wasn't working which meant that as we went about DD was gradually dropping lower and lower. You are meant to take the Xplory down the stairs, but because of this problem, I was worried about the overall safety of the pram.

I tried to obtain a refund and it was extremely difficult even if the product was faulty. A while after we were told that they have found a fix for the problem we had (so it cannot have been as isolated as they would have us to believe). I didn't even know about the problem with the wheels.

It is a shame because I loved my Xplory. But if you are prepared to put that sort of money in a pram you want safety and value for money before anything else. To me the Xplory is nothing but a nice and not sufficiently tested prototype.

For DS I bought a bugaboo, it is not as stylish or easy to manouvre but at least it is sturdy. 7.5 months of walking and it is still as new (I only owned my Xplory for about two months)

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 02/02/2009 20:36

I think babies in stokkes look like contestants on blind date. I can't take those buggies seriously!

Ewe · 02/02/2009 20:38

I love, love, love my Xplory. Don't find it heavy and bulky at all, find it very easy to use on escalators, stairs and tubes, easier than my Maclaren Techno.

Really easy to manouvere and my DD loves being so high and we chat constantly. It is definitely a city buggy though, wouldn't suit someone who is off roading a lot but fine in the park, over grass etc. The adjustable highchair element is one of my favourite things about it, so useful.

ScottishMummy · 02/02/2009 20:38

Look at rent-a-buggy they will rentyou prams

misdee · 02/02/2009 20:39
