Can you recommend any baby bath product which will not dry my DD skin?

Hi, my baby is 15 days old and I used Johnson Johnson bath soap sample (I got in the hospital) once on her head and her skin got very dry. I am not planing to use bath soap very often but every now and then it is needed. I would prefer something free from chemicals and possibly moisturising. Can anybody recommend anything they liked which was mild enough for such a small baby please?

They do grow out of the dry skin thing very quickly - you may not have a problem, but E45 do a bath suitable for babies.

TheStatueOfLiffey · 22/01/2009 21:47

Oilatum. That's the only thing I can use for my two as they both get eczema behind the knees.

bodiddly · 22/01/2009 21:47

E45 Junior worked for my ds at that age!

norksinmywaistband · 22/01/2009 21:48

I use halos and horns range, DS had eczema and has been fine with it

Congratulations BTW

hellymelly · 22/01/2009 21:48

I used the weleda baby wash and it was fine, only needed in teeny amounts and it didn't irritate their skin.most health food shops seem to stock it.

HeinzSight · 22/01/2009 21:48

Oilatum. You can get it on presription if your baby has dry skin. HTH

feedthegoat · 22/01/2009 21:49

2nd the E45 products. It is the only bubble bath which doesn't aggravate eczema for my ds.

liahgen · 22/01/2009 21:49

you just need water for a baby this age, they don't need products.

nicolamumof3 · 22/01/2009 21:49

johnsons is quite harsh on newborn skin full of chemicals. i also used halo and horns my two youngest can now withstand anything tho tbh. also the little me range is good and also waitrose own label stuff smells divine.

mrsdisorganised · 22/01/2009 21:50

second oilatum if you have to use something....I used nothing at all in the bath but covered any dry patches with pure olive oil after my dc's came out, they all have exzema, worked brilliantly.

EldonAve · 22/01/2009 21:50

water only for tinies

CuddlyKelpie · 22/01/2009 21:52

When ds was born he was very flaky - I was given a big tub of emulsifying ointment to put on after his bath, it worked really well.

ITA with the other with the use of no products. If you do need to use something try akamuti for completely natural products and stuff. love it

noonki · 22/01/2009 22:11

Apart from a tiny bit of shampoo I have never used any soap or products on my two.

I'm allergic and it seems alien to me.

Those products are just full of chemicals that no one really knows what they do combine with all the other chemicals in other products.

IF I use soap my hands get so dry they crack.

Water is king

if they start getting ezcema it is best to use a bit of oilatum as water can be drying.(but not as drying as soap!)

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/01/2009 22:13

You really don't need anything, but if you must, then oilatum.

CamelToe · 22/01/2009 22:14

oilatum has lanolin in,

i found hydromol better for dd

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 22/01/2009 22:27

how about just a little olive oil on your LO's skin?

Forensica · 22/01/2009 22:50

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I have only bathed her twice so far but water only seems like the best advice. I will get some really good olive oil since I think that the water here is drying her skin too. Will wait with products for later then.
Thank you!

My DS is the same hun and i just wash him in plain water, then put olive oil all over him

Its worked brilliant.. his skin is lovely and only been doing it 2 days, he is a week old tmoz

The MW told me to use olive oil (not virgin it is too light) not baby oil cos is full of chemicals which will bring baby out in rash.. cos of the perfume in it too.

Congratulations on the birth of your DD by the way xx

bellabelly · 22/01/2009 23:03

If you think your dd's skin still seems dry even just using plain water, mention it to your gp and he/she can prescribe something to help. Mine prescribed Doublebase bath lotion which really helped and also the doublebase cream.

Forensica · 22/01/2009 23:37

She mainly has dry hands and the area where her nappy is on sides of her belly. I will see if the oil helps first.

bluesapphire - congratulations to you too..they are wonderful being so tiny aren't they

I ony used water except for extremely sticky poo, when I had a nice rice soap I got from Bangkok - not much use to you now!

But since the sticky poo stuff stopped, I haven't used any soap/cleanser at all, just water. I don't even like using wipes, not even the Nature Babycare ones. DS is now 13.5mo.
