It's an Animal- the third dyson we've had, and I'm really beginning to think they aren't all they're cracked up to be.
Someone said a Philips one was good, or a Miele?
A;lso - dh likes upright, and I quite like cylinder because i remeber a vax I had years ago and it was really good.

Miele are the best as far as I am concerned (I think they only do cylinders).

Dyson are useless-I have had a couple and then reverted to Miele!

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 02/01/2009 09:51

ok. we were dyson converts until a few days ago. I too had got fed up with my dyson breaking. Go and look in john lewis at the Sebo komfort k1.
OMG they are superb. They have also been reduced by £65 recently and are only £100 with a 5 year parts and labour guarantee. How can you go wront?
They have two heads one of which is a power head, retractable cord, bumper bar,etc etc. I was totally converted having used one and I have always aways used a dyson or an upright.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 02/01/2009 09:53

oh and we looked at the miele too as they had them side by side and we still picked the sebo.
Miele do a nice upright I believe

belgo · 02/01/2009 09:55

I've also found dysons to be good, but have since bought a Miele S5210 cylinder vaccuum cleaner and it's great - very light. But I did manage to break one of the plastic attachments when I dropped it onto our tiled floor.

plumandolive · 02/01/2009 10:02

Thankyou!
the sebo komfort looks quite small is it powerfull?
We have floorboards downstairs and carpet upstairs.
Three dcs.
Two dogs.
Mud.
The miele looks good Does having bags make it a chore after Dyson? Are the bags expensive?

OP posts:
mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 02/01/2009 10:05

its 2100watts which is pretty powerful for a small hoover. Aparently the bags last ages and ages. The power is adjustable too

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 02/01/2009 10:06

oh and they might still be showing as £169 but I assure you in the NOrwich branch they are £100

plumandolive · 02/01/2009 10:26

dh has just come back from sainsburys and there was a vax for £75.
But I think I'd rather spend the extra and get miels or Komfort.
Should I persuade him?

OP posts:
mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 02/01/2009 10:29

oh god yes. vax are not bad hoovers but Miele or sebo are both german made and superior imo

SweetApril · 02/01/2009 10:57

Absolutely agree about Dyson. I am disappointed with mine. Fantastic suction to start with but it has dwindled dramatically over time (even allowing for replacement motor which it needed after only two years of very light use). The only thing I still like about it is the fact that it is bagless and you can see the dirt which for me is handy reminder that hoovers actually do need emptying!

There was a similar thread to this a while ago and there were lots of recommendations for Sebo. I was waiting to buy one in the sales so will look at the John Lewis offer (thanks, mrsleroy!). Have heard good things about Miele too. When we bought the Dyson the sales person in John Lewis tried hard to convince us that the Miele was better but I had my heart set on a Dyson.

morningpaper · 02/01/2009 10:58

Miele Cat and Dog - it RULES

hannahsaunt · 02/01/2009 11:13

I love my Dyson. Dh killed it last week vacuuming pine needles (and I may have to confess to a contribution by vacuuming plaster dust) but it has been repaired for £30 and back to new. It's 10 in the summer.

slackrunner · 02/01/2009 11:14

Another vote for Miele Cat and Dog.

SweetApril · 02/01/2009 11:21

Hannahsaunt - see, I think a hoover should be able to deal with pine needles no problem, even an entire Christmas tree's worth. But plaster dust is def a hoover killer! I totally wrecked one using it for that. Actually, I think Dyson now have a specific note on the troubleshooting bit of their website advising against vaccuming plaster dust.

Oh, but now that looks like I'm accusing you of breaking your Dyson! Didn't mean that at all - blame it on your DH

roisin · 02/01/2009 11:23

Oh, no. I bought a new Dyson (my first) last week. My mum and sil both recommended them.

I hope it's OK for us.

SweetApril · 02/01/2009 11:58

Roisin, don't worry, enjoy it (as much as you can enjoy a hoover). I suspect there are just some rogue ones out there and mine, unfortunately, is one of them. Besides it's 5 years old now and I'm sure they're making improvements to them all the time. And my MIL has one ten years old, like Hannahsaunt, and it's still going strong.

plumandolive · 02/01/2009 12:00

Do you think fire place soot is similar to plaster dust? Our dyson was rubbish at that.
But they do function better when you wash out all those tons of filters.

Anyone got any views on Philips bagless marathon? It comes out quite high in the Which test.
But Miele scores highest consistantly.
Thankyou everyone- you,ve convinced my dh too- even tho he doesn't like bags, and it's more expensive....

OP posts:
plumandolive · 02/01/2009 12:02

Roisin- did you take out the guarentee thing? Because i found that the thing that broke most on our dyson was the plastic tubey thing- that's what has happened for the umpteenth time on this one, and our guarentee has run out.
Also- if you keep the filters always clean- the suction is far better- and check all the pieces that come apart for stones, playmobil heads, lego etc- they tend to really really make it lose suction power.....

neversaydie · 02/01/2009 12:17

Our Dyson recently died at 10 years old. It did a decent job on large areas of carpet, but was heavy and awkward to carry and hopeless on stairs and fiddly bits. Also, it's flex was too short. I loathed it (to be fair, I am not particularly fond of cleaning at the best of times). We have replaced it with a Miele cat and dog which is much lighter, easier to move about and superb on stairs. We have also just acquired a Roomba, which is the first vacuum cleaner I have ever had which I wholeheartedly like. It picks up stuff even immediately after I have run the Miele over an area, so I reckon it is pretty effective.

norksinmywaistband · 02/01/2009 12:27

Miele cat and dog here. bags don't need changing much and I hoover a lot.
I think it is far superior to dyson on hard floors and does well on carpet too

macherie · 02/01/2009 12:30

Another vote for Miele cat and dog, much better than the Dyson it replaced.

roisin · 02/01/2009 15:58

A thing came with it for a free 5-yr parts guarantee. I hadn't bothered to fill it in yet (usually reckon that if they give you a free guarantee it's very unlikely to break), but will be filling it in first thing when we get back tomorrow. Thanks

I will also be reading the instruction booklet carefully for info about keeping filters clean etc.

cmotdibbler · 02/01/2009 20:18

If you have a Dyson, they will come out and fix it - whatever the problem is- for 50 quid. We had an entire new motor and other bits replaced on ours and they came out in 2 days

CarGirl · 02/01/2009 20:24

Miele!!!

I just replaced my old old one and they've got a limited edition one out at the moment - it's red and comes with a 5 year warranty (usually only have 2) and it was £170 at my local highstreet retailer. I think it was the red admiral.

CarGirl · 02/01/2009 20:26
