Sling/carrier for an 8 month plus - what's the best?

EllieG · 01/01/2009 16:18

That's it really - my fabric sling is hurting my back cos my baby is a chubster and most carriers seem to say they only go up to 12 months. Anyone got a good one which lasts a bit longer?

Ergos are fab. Easily carrying a 11mo in ours!

EllieG · 01/01/2009 16:27

Thanks will have a look at them. Can you use them past a year?

I love my mei hip carrier (cross between hip seat and sling I guess)

ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 01/01/2009 16:30

here

Being lazy there beansprout - I see it does. Ta clarissimo will check it out. Need something DH feels manly enough in too as he refuses to wear ring slings or fabric ones (to be fair they are flowery)

EllieG · 01/01/2009 16:44

oo they look nice and the stripy one might be significantly manly

ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 01/01/2009 16:48

Mine is plain black ellie

EllieG · 01/01/2009 17:54

Crickey the ergo is pricey innit? About 70 quid. Looks good as goes up to 60 llbs and the mai hip on only to 35. DD is big babe (20 pounds at 8 months) but then do I need one that takes her til she is 3 or 4 as presumably she can walk pretty well then?

apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 17:59

ergo fab - it can still be handy to be able to keep them up out of the way when they can't/won't behave or decide they've walked far enough (5 year olds still ask to be carried ime, even those who were never slung). i still used it occasionally at 4. is well worth investment imo - mine's been going strong 5 years now and can see it easily lasting another baby after this one's done.

SnowOfHands · 01/01/2009 18:01

Still sling my 20mo in an ergo. Fabulous. She's about 35/36lb. Got it when she was 6 months so she was about 25/26lb then. Fab investment.

EllieG · 01/01/2009 18:02

Wish I could try one out before paying all that.

What are people's thoughts on other soft carriers like mai tais etc?

OP posts:
apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 18:33

well if you didn't get on with it early on i bet you'd get most of your money back on ebay or the babywearer, would prolly work out cheaper than hiring tbh.

i have meitais too, and prefer them to the ergo on the front, but have always found ergo better on back, and mines an old one that has a not-so-great sleep hood. but that said you will find people who prefer either, but i'd guess 75% would go for ergo over meitai if you pinned em down and said you can only have one.

EllieG · 01/01/2009 19:08

Found a Jetpak one for sale on bigmama. Anyone know about them? sorry to keep asking is hard to find reviews of these

OP posts:
chloemegjess · 01/01/2009 19:15

I have a ring sling and use it in the "hip" position (can't remember what it is called). I am 6 months pregnant and still manage to use it with my 1 year old with no problems. Hope to use it for my next one too for BF.

EllieG · 01/01/2009 19:17

Have found babywearer website hurray will answer all my questions

OP posts:
ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 01/01/2009 19:31

Ellie do you want me to pop my one in the post for a trial? won't need for a few weeks and light to post

EllieG · 01/01/2009 19:38

That's super kind of you but I think am going to go for a front/back one rather than a hip carrier - I find my hip carry ones hurt my back and the sites have looked at say that front and back ones are best for hurty backs esp as I want this one to be for when we go for long walks (Mol gets grouchy in buggy sometimes). But thanks formerly peachy, is v thoughtful of you

ellaroo woven wrap v comfy for big heavy 5 m o here

claireybrations · 01/01/2009 19:45

For long periods the wrap wins every time for me but find the mei tai easier if ds is going to be in and out of it

BadHair · 01/01/2009 19:46

I have a karrimor rucksack-style carrier that ds3 uses on long walks where his pushchair won't go. It's fab - really comfy as I wear it like a rucksack and it's fully adjustable so it fits me (and him!) perfectly. It takes about 3 minutes to get him into it, which doesn't sound like a long time but if you're in a rush it feels like a year.

I also have a ring sling bought from a mumsnetter that he still uses for nipping to school from the car, though at 20 months he is getting a touch heavy for it. It's fine as long as I'm able to adjust it properly, which at 8.55 isn't always the case!

EllieG · 01/01/2009 19:48

I gave away my ring sling thinking I wouldn't use it much and have regretted ever since, as the hotslings one I bought has been rubbish - she hates it and it kills my back

OP posts:
NattyTurkeyAndEggnog · 01/01/2009 19:50

ring slings, i use the zolowear ones, i carry my 18month AND my 2 1/2 year old in them, and can carry my 18month for WHOLE days.
well worth it, u can get cheap imataions to try if you dont want to spend out if not sure

ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 01/01/2009 20:08

No probs ellie

FWIW I rasther liked my old close one also and would recommend it but have given it away now

Yurtgirl · 01/01/2009 20:12

I loved our hugababy until dd was 2 1/2

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 01/01/2009 20:32

check out slingjax for a good range of stuff too.
Mei tai or a ssc like a yamo, ergo, patapum (lke and ergo but cheaper) beco etc might also fill the gap
