I know loads of people ask this but, can you fit an 8 y/o in a toddler bed?

Dd's room is tiny, and only fits a single bed, as if you put even a bedside table in there it makes it so that there is not enough room to walk down the side of the bed to tuck her in.

A toddler bed however would fit across the room as opposed to going down the length of it, therefore tripling the room's size (yes, it is v small!). Would she still fit in it at 8, which is when we will be moving to a (hopefully!) bigger house? She is 4.8 atm. Or should I get an extending one and then move it to the longway position when she grows? They look like they will snap in half if I leaned on it too hard .

Well my dd is nearly 5 and still in her toddler bed. Only because we're still looking for a reasonably priced single bed to replace it. Bless her, if we take too much longer she will be hanging out of the end.

For an 8 year old, I would definitely say no! An extending bed may work though, but may need replacing sooner than a normal single - they tend to be narrower too.

VirginBoffinMum · 03/12/2008 22:21

I have got a 10-year-old in an extendible IKEA bed at 3/4 length, with one of their better mattresses so it supports his back properly. One of my colleagues has her 14-year old in one at full stretch. So that's what I would buy. Or a hammock!

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:26

Oooh, a hammock would be good!! I feel a bit bad as she can't have her toys out in the lounge, as that is too small, but she also can't have them out in her room, as you can't get them out as the bed is in the way! A friend suggested moving rooms, so I am in the small one and she is in the big one, which is sounding more sensible the more I think about it, but the entire room would be my bed, as in you would climb onto the bed as you walked in, and I like having my own room . God I'm selfish!

How about a high bed so she can keep stuff/play underneath?

onebatmother · 03/12/2008 22:30

shorty loft-bed! shorty loft-bed! Then you feel as though you have the whole floorspace. Much better.

These are expensive but you can specify exact size. Lots more for about £100, check ebay.

onebatmother · 03/12/2008 22:30

x post emkana

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:31

Wow, do you have one onebat? It will be in front of her window-do you think it will block her light? Oooh such a good idea! The trofast extendable bed sounds ideal too!! Am so glad I posted now!!!

Just in case you were actually considering the hammock, dont do it! have you actually ever slept in one?

very uncomfortable, gave me back ache for days afterwards!

you want something nice and flat for your Dcs back!

SleighGirl · 03/12/2008 22:33

onebatmother, def worth it.

Argos do a shorty mid height bed, dd who is 5 absolutely loves it, got it off freecycle think they are £150

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:34

Oh poop, we only have 150cm width and the shortest one is 165-it would totally overpower the room if it went lengthways, grrr! It would clear the top of the window though so wouldn't block the light if it was short enough!

OP posts:
Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:34

Was only joking about the hammock !

My friends dd is a tall for aage 8 nearly 9 and comfortably sleeps in the Ikea Hensvik which is only 160cm in length so you should be fine with a large toddler bed until she is 8.

onebatmother · 03/12/2008 22:37

contact the expensive people - if they can reduce the width for an extra thirty quid, they can probably reduce the length..

We have a cheapy argos one and a more expensive mattress from Ikea which doesn't quite fit the length but is fine. Across a window too, and is fine light-wise.

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:38

Would anyone give up their nice roomy room so that their dc could have a play bedroom? Am I a selfish mummy? Am starting to feel bad now, but it is my place of calm and re-generation [yoga calm emoticon]

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:41

to "contact the expensive people'! I just don't want to spend many pennies and then her grow out of it really soon if it was too short for her, However, I did do a weird lying on the floor thing last night and I could lie flat between the sides, so she should be ok.There is 5' 5" of room-is that more than 150 cm? It is isn't it?

Mmm, I love the Hensvik-I always wanted a day bed!

BibiJesus · 03/12/2008 22:44

DD is 4 and has the Ikea Hensvik toddler bed which I am sure will still fit her for a ood few years yet unless she gets very tall. She looks tiny in it at the moment and she's 104cm.

Can anyone with and 8yo dd measure them for op and we can work out the average MN 8yo dd height?!

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:45

He he! I want a Hensvik now, I really do. Tried to measure it a la fingertips as my tape measure is in inches, but neither worked!

OP posts:
SleighGirl · 03/12/2008 22:51

5'5" is 1m65cm

SleighGirl · 03/12/2008 22:52

150cm is 5' pretty much

SleighGirl · 03/12/2008 22:52

we took the skirting boards off in one room to fit bunk beds in!

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 22:57

Yay!!! That is so good! Am so off to Ikea tomorrow night! !

I regularuyl decamp to my son's toddler bed for a good night's sleep. I have to stretch my legs in the morning a bit, but oterwise I am fine. I am 36 and 5'4". I'm sure your 8 year old will be fine

cheeseandsproutssarnie · 03/12/2008 23:10

my dd who is 8(admittadly little 8)sleeps with ds2 aged 3 in his toddler bed sometimes.

Pawslikepaddington · 03/12/2008 23:25

Aw! I have this vision of an 8 year old curled up with a 3 year old! I keep thinking it is the end of all bedtime cuddles, but she can always come into my bed! Am a bit as I bought a brand new mattress 2 months ago, but the space really is too tight for the poor little girly-I didn't realise how small the house would be!
