Thinking of getting something like this for dd this year with additional items from family.

Is it worth the money and what would you recommend please?

Thanks.

Glad you have asked this as my DD has asked for Sylvanian too!

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 01/12/2008 21:57

It is expensive but it has a lot of detail, lots to collect and very popular with my niece.

gothicmama · 01/12/2008 21:58

my dd would say yes ef worth it, we started with a family and a small house it then grew there is a lot of stuff to choose from so look for a theme she is interested in ie nursery school , hotel, water and build on that or just what she likes. DD is a bit obsessed but plays really wel with hers We have brought very littel of tehfurnoture items as she often makes or imagines the interiors which is good

Penthesileia · 01/12/2008 21:58

My sister (now all grown up) was really into these toys when she was little. We LOVED playing with them, and she has kept them ALL to pass on to any children she might have. So yes, go for it! They are super.

thatsnotmymonster · 01/12/2008 21:59

MY dd (2.5) LOVES hers! She has the baby primrose windmill and some bunny rabbits and various babies. However, there are loads of very small parts which we are keeping separate ATM!

rosealbie · 01/12/2008 21:59

It looks like just the kind of thing that she would like to make up stories with. Thanks for your help so far.

They will last forever if you look after them- dd has some of the things I used to play with about 15 years ago and it's all still going strong. Some of the bits are very small though, so our rule is that it has to stay in her room away from the hands (and mouth ) of her little brother.

gothicmama · 01/12/2008 22:03

I have found this one to be very good, large range and free p&P very good company in my experience here

MilaMae · 02/12/2008 09:52

We've just got the nursery from Woolies came with the teacher,3 pupils and the sandpit for £34.99!!!!

Have a look in Thomas Moore,The Entertainer et al(think they're the same franchise)they are slightly cheaper than that site and there is a free family if you spend over £50.

Coagulate · 02/12/2008 09:52

You buy badgers in dungarees and things.

MilaMae · 02/12/2008 09:59

Never thought I would but dd is 3,am slightly relieved it's SF and not Bratz dolls in hooker clothes

Forgot to say ELC sell SF stuff too, we got the bakery with 20% off so £24 I think.

ExBat · 02/12/2008 10:00

Yet a woodland creature in dungarees is BETTER?

MilaMae · 02/12/2008 10:08

Oh yes. Would much rather give furry folk house space than Miss Puffy lips and friends.

Cocoapops · 02/12/2008 10:12

is this the rabbit version of Rupert Murdoch?

Cocoapops · 02/12/2008 10:13

ooh adn to complete the media meglomaniacs here is Robert Maxwell before the accident

MilaMae · 02/12/2008 10:13
Grin
Cocoapops · 02/12/2008 10:13

i like that website...

Fennel · 02/12/2008 10:14

My dds like them, one reason for buying these is that they seem to keep their appeal right into teenage years for many children, because of the detail and the way they can be toys or "collectibles".

Cocoapops · 02/12/2008 10:14

no breastfeeding for... what ARE they? Mice bears?

Lemontart · 02/12/2008 10:15

ooooh yes! Sylvanian Families
I love them and both my girls (5 and 7) love them very much.
The kits are brilliant, full of all sorts of teeny accessories. Initially they seem expensive sets but the quality and amount within them make it worth while.

We have one big house thing, a windmill and various other add on kits and families. Something they have built up with birthdays and pressies for a while.

I bought a set of 4 cheap little heavy duty cardboard patterned suitcases (size of lunchboxes) as storage boxes for the bits. I think they were about £2 each from a cheap shop (cute - covered in pink and cream flowers). They use these as extra little homes for their animals by putting the lid open flat on the ground and the box on the box lying on it?s side to create an open little one room house. With four of these propped up around the room it is like a little village and a lot cheaper than the homes. If anything, they play with the box houses more than the actual big house.

I recommend the bakery set and the windmill. They are just fantastic. The animals themselves all come with detachable clothing. On ebay and the sylvanian main website you can buy extra sets of clothing from Japan and they work out cheap. The shoe stall is brilliant as you get all these lovely little pairs of shoes and little boxes to put them in.

Polgara2 · 02/12/2008 10:15

Amazon often have good deals on Sylvanians as well.
We have lots and dd2 who is 8 is still asking for more for Christmas. They are very sweet but they are taking over the spare room as well!

MilaMae · 02/12/2008 10:20

Oooooo a SF shoe stall with boxes,am slightly concerned at how excited I am by that. DD would love that(we're both shoe obsessed).

GooseyLoosey · 02/12/2008 10:39

Dd (4) loves them, but beware. I have spent hours on the floor searching for a lollipop smaller than a pin while dd wailed in the background.

Sycamoretree · 02/12/2008 10:45

I just bought DD 3 her first SF set for xmas. I think she'll love it - she loves all that make believe roll play and I like the idea it can be added too. I plumped for a little vetinary surgery or hospital type thingy as she's all into that whole poorly animal, make them better thing!
