MP3 player for 6-year-old dd?

I've been thinking of getting one for dd for Christmas as I'm stuck for ideas this year.

I'm a bit technologically, ahem, out of date re. this kind of thing so I need to ask some stupid questions:

  1. I have a mac - would I need a specific kind of mp3 player?
  1. What would be a good, cheap model for dd to get to grips with?
  1. Do you have a child with one?
  1. Do you have to listen to it through headphones?

Dd got one for her 7th birthday. Was a cheap one, don't know about the Mac thing. You can listen to it through headphones but we got her little speakers too. A year later, it is inexplicably not working.

Ok, I won't get that one then! I've been googling them and found some quite cute ones. But none of them seem to have speakers. I'm just hoping to avoid dd walking around with headphones in all day!

You buy the speakers separately. Think about 15 quid. Mine was a Bratz one but had been dropped.

Ok, thanks.

I've been looking at the Sansa Shaker one which has an external speaker included but there seems to be a problem with downloading with it according to some reviews.

6yo DD has a Barbie B Girl MP3 player - they are currently about £20 on Amazon. We got her an additional memory card for it too. It holds a fair few songs and is bvery easy to use. Uploading songs is pretty simple too. We did have to buy DD some over the ears headphones though as she struggled with in ear ones. It has a rechargebale battery which you charge up buy plugging into the computer (it has its own docking station for this) or you can buy an external charger - we did this to tae it on holiday with us.

Katz's DD has the shaker one. Not sure what memory is like - will try to send her to this thread. I know she had a problem with the bottom coming off the end but not sure if that was solved. It runs off normal batteries.

What about an ipod shuffle. Nice colours, easy to work, not complicated at all, downloads from a mac I presume

why dont you have headphones with the other mp3 players then?

Horton · 31/10/2008 19:07

You can play any MP3 player through speakers. You just have to buy some.

Bought DD 6 Yrs old a high school musical MP3 from argos. £29.99. Fits 500 songs. Looks quite cool too. Sell them in red or orange. Got red one as orange very tacky looking!!

DS (5) has one, its a child friendly one with a volume inhibitor. Has earphones but you can also use with speakers.

imaginaryfriend · 07/11/2008 10:51

HappyMummy, who is it made by?

DD aged 7 has my old Sony one. We bought her some over the ear headphones as we thought the in the ear ones that came with it could damage her ears.

Helennn · 07/11/2008 11:05

Soooo - what is the difference between an MP3 player and an i-pod - anybody? My ds, (nearly 9), wants an i-pod for Xmas but I think they are too dear for something which will probably get lost or broken. Does an MP3 player do the same thing?

HappyMummyOfOne · 07/11/2008 13:31

Imaginaryfriend, just dug it out - its a Max Joy and red and yellow in colour. Had it from play.com at the start of the year.

It comes with lovely earphones (not the in ear ones) and is very easy to use and also simple to transfer music too.

imaginaryfriend · 07/11/2008 13:58

i-pod is made by mac, look it up as then you can work out the extra features. I think the i-pod shuffle is a fabulous MP3 player but not sure it's suitable for kids.

My dd wouldn't want to use headphones or earphones, that's why I'm trying so hard to find one with a speaker.

The creative zen stone has a built in speaker - have seen them on Amazon recently.

imaginaryfriend · 07/11/2008 14:33

Is that the title for it?

I like the look of that one HappyMum but I can't see yet if it's compatible with a mac computer, it only mentions pc.
