Trousers for a very, very thin 2yo

I'm really struggling to find any trousers that ds1 (2.4) can wear and which will stay up. At the moment he's living in shorts, but they're not ideal for winter.

Have tried, and ruled out, M&S, JoJoMamanBebe, and John Lewis. Their sizes 12-18 months are too small, but 18-24 months are too big and fall down (even with the waistband adjusted).

Does anyone else make unusually narrow waisted trousers?

I found vertbaudet o'kids stuff to be quite narrow in the waist.

kittywise · 05/09/2008 19:32

My current baby (16 months) is really, really skinny, not an ounce of fat and nothing fits.
What I do is thread a piece of elastic inside the trouser band that way they all fit. I have done this for many years for ds2 (now 8) who is also a racing snake!

fuzzywuzzy · 05/09/2008 19:34

H&M do trousers with adjustable waistbands, its the only place I can buy trousers for dd1 who is super skinny

MadamAnt · 05/09/2008 19:36

I agree with the suggestion of H&M. Their super skinny fit jeans were the only trousers that fitted DD (and they looked like normal trousers ). Well worth a trip to H&M IMO. It's a pain that they don't do online stuff. Could you look on ebay? Err on the small-side age-wise. DD is 3.5 and tall, but has only just grown out of the 1.5-2 age jeans!

MuffinMclay · 05/09/2008 19:37

Kittywise what a good tip. I will try that.

MM it saves many £££££££££££'s you can spend them on yourself instead

MuffinMclay · 05/09/2008 19:48

Better idea. Boys' trousers really aren't the most thrilling of things.

'a racing snake'! Love it KW!

Piffy · 05/09/2008 20:43

I also have a racing snake of the same age - my big tip is kids braces! Like old chaps braces but you can get them in black, combat colours, red etc. They look really cute too and are adjustable so will suit for years. No more builders bum or soaking wet trousers!

I got mine off ebay but www.babycity.co.uk (sorry links are beyond me...) do lots of fairly reasonable ones too. I tried belts too, but a lot of trousers don't have belt hooks I found, especially the elasticated waist ones. So braces are my number one tip!

also have skinny boys! and also would recommend H&M, Next and Vertbaudet and Gap for coming up small. my 9yr old hates adjustable waists says they are uncomfy, he is soooo skinny though. doesn't take after his mother then! lol.

solidgoldbrass · 05/09/2008 20:59

Is he still in nappies? If so put him in dungarees, that's what I did.
My DS is nearly 4 and half his trousers are still 18-24 months, because now he's toilet trained I have had to stop with the dungarees or I would be washing 3 pairs of them a day.

soph28 · 05/09/2008 21:10

I think I started a thread IDENTICAL to this last year (my ds is now 3y 5mths) and like you shorts were fine but trousers a nightmare!

I have to disagree- NEXT and Tesco- are ENORMOUS! Way too big even in much smaller sizes.

What did he have last year- oh yes John Rocha (Debenhams) in 12-18mths. Some proper designer trousers that were on sale in wee boutiques. M&S jeans with adjustable waist band.

You'll be pleased to know that between 2.10 and 3.2 he must have grown massively as he basically went from wearing 9-12mth trousers at the end of last summer to wearing age 2 by his 3rd birthday. Now he is in age 2-3 trousers and 3-4 tops.

I now have same issue with dd who was 2 in July but all her 9-12mth trousers from last year still fit and some are still too long (Next ones) and some are wearing out on the bum cos she used to bum shuffle! I haven't found any 12-18mth trousers that fither. Luckily she can wear dresses and tights and dungarees!

soph28 · 05/09/2008 21:13

I agree Gap ones are quite skinny but I often find they are too long.

nicolamumof3 · 05/09/2008 21:14

I LOVE dungarees! im currently search some for my 14m old.

MuffinMclay · 05/09/2008 21:43

Braces are just the thing. I've been looking but drew a blank (always forget about ebay). He has a whole heap of trouser already that are the right length but too wide.

He is still in nappies but not for much longer (disastrous first day of potty training today, but that's another story). He has to be potty trained by January for pre-school.

Not had much luck with dungarees. He is a bit top heavy with short tiny legs (lol he sounds like such a freak from this description ). He grew out of some JL ones, but the legs on the next size up are far too long. Dh hates him wearing dungarees too, for some reason I can't quite fathom.

Thank you all for all the ideas. Really helpful.

My DS is just 3 and was wearing 12-18mth trousers today.

Next do a few styles of trouser with a really small elasticated waist and a functioning drawstring. Agree that Next, Gap and some H&M styles are best. Always go for an adjustable waist.

Also in Asda you can get for £2 some plain navy tracksuit bottoms which are very skinny, we have 3 pairs of those.

DS is potty training atm, not very successfully, and we are always running out of trousers.

If all else fails I sew on an extra button or take a tuck in the back and sew it down, to bring the waist in a couple of inches.

accessorizequeen · 06/09/2008 12:24

Next also do those stretch adjustable belts which are great for trousers with no adjustable waist. I find Next huge tbh, ds1 is generally in their 2-3 and still too big (he's nearly 5). H&M is great for both him and normal size cloth-wearing 21mo ds2.

FAQ · 06/09/2008 12:30

See pumpkin patch has already been mentioned - I've not had a problem with them not being hard wearing (very active DS's_ but they ARE expensive.

onceinalifetime · 06/09/2008 16:51

MuffinMclay, I know you don't have one near you but H&M also do braces and small size belts.

MuffinMclay · 06/09/2008 20:58

As luck would have it, I'm going to be near an H&M next Sunday, so will pop in and have a look.

Going to try Next tomorrow too. Off to check out Pumpkin Patch website now.

I have a skinny little bean too. I went to american apparel and bought some tracksuit bottoms. They are perfect and comfy and he spends his life in them. perfect for potty training too

MuffinMclay · 07/09/2008 19:26

Went to Next today. What a grim selection of trousers they had (we only have a very small branch here). I bought one pair of trousers that had an elasticated waist and a belt. All the jeans were far too big (and plastered with horrible slogans). The ones I got were still a little too big but I think wearable if I take them in a little.

Will investigate all the other options too.

Does anyone know what Boden's waist sizing is like? We've only bought tops from there.

OP posts:
kittywise · 07/09/2008 22:41

MM just stick with the elastic!

foxytocin · 08/09/2008 00:10

try VertBaudet. I bought a few things ages ago for dd (petit bateau as already mentioned) and the fit were good.
