baby slings

all of you who have used these... which is the best one? how did you get on with it?
We think that ds has reflux, and the vast majority of the time he won't go in his crib as it seems to be causing him a lot of discomfort.
Thought I might try a sling as he is much happier when I am holding him... any advice?

I had a Wilkinet and hated it, but lots of people love them. I did like carrying him, but found the sling very uncomfortable. I'll go for a ring sling if there's a next time!

Twiglett · 18/02/2005 14:23

I quite liked baby bjorn

supposedly there's a wedge shaped mattress you can buy for reflux babies that you strap them into a harness to sleep

saw it on the telly it must be true

starlover · 18/02/2005 15:04

what's a ring sling?

wedge shaped mattresses sound not sure about the harness... bit scary!

I got a ring sling from Maya wrap and while it was good in lots of ways the rings dug into my shoulder and I found that uncomfortable. Mind you Im really skinny and boney so its prob just me. DD loved it mind nad it was great for feeding. I ended up making one of my own tho which was great and ill be draging it out for this summer to carry dd around in again.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2005 15:25

Ring slings look precarious to me, but I know people who've been happy with them.

I used a Kelty Kids sling, which nobody else seems to have, but I found was excellent - particularly as you put the harness on, then put the baby in his bit, then you clip the two together. If you come home and the baby is sound asleep, unclip him and put him down! No wrestling.

And I found I could feed in it, although I think that only works with those of us who are less breasty, from what friends have said.

I've used it with two kids, and two other friends have used it with theirs ... another friend has booked it for her fourth kid, due in a couple of months.

I had a baby bjorn and used it lots with both kids, especially dd as she stayed small and light for ages.
You can also put sleeping baby down with these as the whole front bit unclips - no wrestling.

morningpaper · 18/02/2005 15:56

I had a baby Bjorn but I found that the straps were quite narrow so there was quite a lot of pressure on my back. I'd like to try something else for no. 2.

Ameriscot2005 · 18/02/2005 15:56

I've found a Maya wrap to be the sling that can carry both babies and toddlers.

Never used Baby Bjorn brand sling, but have used similar earlier models, and I'd say they are only of use for little babies - less than four months. Others will disagree, but that's what I've found with my kids.

Also, some babies like slings more than others, so it's not always the sling's fault.

starlover · 18/02/2005 18:22

I don't mind if it can carry toddlers really, it's just really while this reflux is upsetting him.
Need something nice and comfy for the both of us!

has anyone used this

We had a premax and a huggababy as well. DH prefered the premax and I the huggababy. I'll find a link for the huggababy.

hercules · 18/02/2005 18:34

good use for both kids from this one. Up to 18 months.

jabberwocky · 18/02/2005 18:38

I used an Over The Shoulder Baby Holder when ds was newborn. It can be worn backwards so that the shoulder pad makes a pillow when they are small. As he got a little bigger I went to a Maya wrap and liked it very well too. The Baby Bjorn was good for when we were going to do a lot of walking as it equalized the weight. Wearing the sling in that situation kind of made my shoulder hurt after a while, but I could wear it around the house pretty much all day without a problem.

WestCountryLass · 18/02/2005 22:16

I've got a Huggababy and it is brill It is much easier than afront carrier as you jsut shove it over your shoulder, whack baby in and pull the strap taut

bensmum3 · 18/02/2005 23:52

Hi,
ds now 19 months was in hospital for a weekend with ? reflux. Personally I put it down to sensitivity to dairy products, but it was difficult to prove as I was breastfeeding, We used a ring sling (especially for going to sleep) and an ergo. I still use the ergo at 19 months and would definately recommend it for front or back use !

milward · 19/02/2005 00:13

Used a babybjorn with my dds - until they were around 18 months. Perfect as put weight on my shoulders not back.

bonym · 19/02/2005 17:38

Babybjorn - wore it all the time with dd1 and found it very comfortable and easy to put on. It's just come out of the attic and been washed for use with dd2 due in 5weeks!

flix · 19/02/2005 21:17

use the baby bjorn a lot and find it quite good, if dd false asleep its really easy to undo and put her to bed. I also saw the wedge thing on a baby whisperer show where the baby was strapped for bed and it did wonders for that baby you should check it out. reflux is from a weak sphincter, if they are upright it stops stomach acid from rising up.

bluebear · 19/02/2005 21:28

My ds had reflux, I used a kelty kangaroo sling (similar to a baby bjorn but much more support so you can wear it longer). I also use a huggababy (which is a ring sling) which is brill but small babies aren't as upright in them as with the 'front carrier' type.

My dd now 2 had reflux until she was one, wedge sponge under matress helped lots and tucked her in tight with cotton sheet to help keep her in place!! We had a mothercare 3in1 carrier similar to baby bjorn but cheaper! Found it fantastic as when baby gets bigger in can change to a back carrier easier to get dd in and out of aswell.

debrak · 20/02/2005 21:31

This has nothing to do with this thread, but something has been driving me crazy for a couple of weeks. I am new to mumsnet and have been reading with interest some of the discussions over the las two or three weeks. Although I have found lots of useful information there are some things that I just don't get. I realise that the abbreiviation ds means baby - but why ds? Sometimes it's dd - what's the difference. dh is husband - but why? Please someone put me out of my misery. A run down of useful abbrieviations would be much appreciated!

Didn't have a baby sling - sorry!

debrak · 20/02/2005 21:49

Just discovered the acronym list (feel a bit stupid for asking those questions now)!

sansouci · 21/02/2005 01:23

Babybjorn for both babies. Great!

nbsmum · 21/02/2005 13:46

i used a baby bjorn with dd1, which was ok, fairly comfy, for dd2 (due yesterday!!!) i have bought a pouch sling, to make handsfree bf easier, haven't tried it for small baby yet, but have used it as a hip carrier with dd1 (16 months)
very reasonably priced, only £18 made to measure from a sahm online, can dig out the email address if anyone needs it.

We used a baby bjorn with dd until she was about 4 months. We paid extra for the extra length straps so tall dh could also use it. At 4 months dd outgrew the baby bjorn, so got a baby bjorn Active (bigger model) and still use it. dh uses it to carry her, I use it around the house, as I find dd (12kg) plus shopping too much.

I now use a kari-me wraparound sling, which I've used since dd was 6 months. So comfortable - can carry her for hours. Supposedly you can use it from birth, but I'm not sure how supported a younger baby (who can't hold head up) would be in it.

Also have a kelty kids pouch (from John Lewis in London) which was comfy from 6-8 months, with handy pouch for wallet and keys - but once the baby gets to long, you can't keep on using it (we don't snap the top bits on the Baby Bjorn Active now because dd too long)

Never got on with the ring sling I bought from NCT catalogue. Think it would have helped if I had bought it from a shop where they could fit it properly (bought kari-me from shop) and show me how to put baby in/out of it.

Love using a sling! Sanity saver and lovely to be so close to your baby all the time.
