All in the subject really: I would rather pay more so the items last than cheap and tatty within a month IYSWIM. Its for the whole lot. It's not anything unusual but I did notice that Tesco don't sell girls pale blue shirts (not the polo-type). TIA

M & S.

Although I always buy dd trousers from Asda - £2.50 bung in the wash and no ironing. Fab

Sidge · 19/08/2008 15:48

I like Next's school uniform - good quality and not too expensive.

saythatagain · 19/08/2008 15:49

I'd not thought of Next; I didn't realise they did them. I had ear marked M&S as our first port of call. I'm hoping to get stuff that is all non-iron too!

Stay away from Asdas trousers. The hems come lose, and they fray at the bottom.
Poor quality and definitely cheap and tatty within even shorter than a month!. Good for non iron shirts, though!

Otherwise, I second either M&S and also Mothercare is good quality.

Swedes · 19/08/2008 15:50

John Lewis (they do 100% cotton trousers) or M&S.

I hope your daughter enjoys school.

SqueakyPop · 19/08/2008 15:50

Marks and Spencers or John Lewis

ImnotMamaGbutsheLovesMe · 19/08/2008 15:50

M&S all the way though Adams and Sainsbury's blue polo shirts are fab.

MamaG · 19/08/2008 15:51

I was going to go to Tesco tomorrow and stcok up for DS - will it be shit?

saythatagain · 19/08/2008 15:51

Thanks Swedes - me too! Whilst working hard I will check out both John Lewis & Next websites!!!

My dd is going into Year 6 and has had the Asda trousers for years without any problems. I am talking about the silky type ones that don't need any ironing. Cheap as chips. She loves them as do I.

FAQ · 19/08/2008 15:51

the cheaper the better - I've discovered that doesn't matter how much you pay for their trousers - they put the knees through in the same length of time

Swedes · 19/08/2008 15:52

MamaG - Tesco trousers crackle when they walk.

TheFifthApe · 19/08/2008 15:52

M&S

dd1 is wearing her skirts from last year, this year as they still fit

her shirts/polos are being handed down to dd2

all fab

DrNortherner · 19/08/2008 15:53

I like M&S and BHS.

MamaG · 19/08/2008 15:53

oh really Swedes? Bugger!

FAQ · 19/08/2008 15:54

don't get me wrong I like M&S and the likes - but in terms of not getting wrecked - they're all the same - if they're sliding across the playground on their knees I prefer to buy cheap and nasty so it costs me less over the school year to keep replacing

saythatagain · 19/08/2008 15:54

Dd's school has the traditional school shirts and jumpers get-up along with tie (which will be on elastic for reception!!). Fortunatley, the blazer is optional - £79 and thats without the school badge that you (i.e. my mum) have to sew on yourself.....gulp!

My son has had M&S trousers all the way through 3 years of school and hasn't put a knee through any. He did catch the seam and rip them there but has no idea how he did it.

girls don't slide around on their knees so skirts last for longer

FAQ · 19/08/2008 15:57

blimey IMG - that's impressive - DS1 had M&S when he started reception and 3/5 pairs had to be replaced by Christmas!

MamaG · 19/08/2008 15:58

Thats what I'm concerned about FAQ - I know DS will be rolling around on the floor within minutes of setting foot through the gates! Idon't want to spend £8 on a pair of trousers, only to chuck them out!

FAQ · 19/08/2008 16:01

and DS1 was a "quiet" boy in Reception too - definitely not going to buy expensive for DS2 when he starts in September - he nearly managed to put a hole through his Pumpkin Patch jeans

hannahsaunt · 19/08/2008 16:06

Mothercare trousers have lasted ds1 through each school year (new pairs each August and then lasting...). Usually on a buy one, get one half price all year.

savoycabbage · 19/08/2008 16:11

I had a John Lewis pinafore last year here that was very good quality. The box pleats stayed in, which they tend not to on the cheaper ones, and didn't need ironing. Last year they had a pocket and they haven't this year so I have got these from Next which are quite nice and look better in real life than they do here.
