Handbags - what do you all use?

Hi, my handbag has broken and I desperately need a new one. I like fairly roomy bags that will hold dd's snacks, beaker, etc. Not too fussed about designer label or not, as long as it looks ok, oh, and has a zip fastener (I have been pickpocketted when young 'cos I was stupid enough to carry an open bucket bag)!

What do other mums carry in the day that does the job but looks good too?

Thanks all, have put a bid in on Ebay for a roomy bag by Diesel (brand new, no tags). Does anyone know how much Diesel bags are new - I have no idea how much my max bid should be!

I used to use my pockets or the side of my bra until very recently, chiefly because I alway put stuff in the pockets of the kids' Little Nipper but now I have started going out by myself of an afternoon and evening

I now have a nice wicker one with strappy handles and a butterfly motif. {smug I'm grown up now emoticon}

Mine is one of those across the body bags, big enough to take all I need, it's brown cord with lots of zips. It's brill as it keeps my hands free and it's safe from pickpockets and even if it gets heavy it's comfy to wear! Plus there's no chance of leaving it somewhere or losing it, as I have been known to do with too many of my possesions in the past

I have one of these , from John Lewis. I apologise for the extreme uselessness of their website but these babies are TOUGH and smart.

LIZS · 11/02/2005 10:14

Just downsized to a rectangular black Esprit bag from a medium Samsonite Black label.

Joolstoo · 11/02/2005 10:16

I do have a handbag but I really can't stand the damn things they just end up full of crap!

marthamoo · 11/02/2005 10:25

I just bought this at M&S, because my red Hedgren backpack which I've had for years was looking very tatty. The new one has two fairly big zip compartments, a front pocket which fits my purse in, and a drop down flap at the back with spaces for cards and a clip for keys.

And I just bought this for Summer in the bright lime green.

marthamoo · 11/02/2005 10:26

And bundle's backpack is my changing bag!

Honestly, I do shop at places other than M&S.

Joolstoo · 11/02/2005 10:28

one for winter and one for summer

if I can get away with it - I just stuff my credit cards in me pocket

marthamoo · 11/02/2005 10:29

One for Winter and one for Summer? Errr...nope - those are just the new ones. Dh is very despairing of my bag "thing".

Joolstoo · 11/02/2005 10:30

blimey moo - how many handbags have you got!?

marthamoo · 11/02/2005 10:31

Erm...quite a few.

marthamoo · 11/02/2005 10:34

But none shaped like a teapot

Have you used it, Hausfrau?

Joolstoo · 11/02/2005 10:35

have you seen the one Maria has on Coronation street - like a basque - how bizarre - can't imagine a teapot handbag either

marthamoo · 11/02/2005 10:36

I've seen them in TJHughes (our local pile-it-high apology for a departmenst store) - not exactly my thing!

snafu · 11/02/2005 10:43

I use this for everyday so I can fit my stuff and ds's in there too (in khaki though). Apparently they also do a version with a changing mat inside. If I'm not carting ds's bits and pieces around I have a small brown leather shoulder bag with a zip bought for about a tenner.

Joolstoo · 11/02/2005 10:47

I know TJ Hughes but have never been in!

actually I like the brown one you showed - in fact I saw one in M&S that was very similar but I'm sure it was about £45!

Bouj · 11/02/2005 11:14

I have a big Oasis bucket type thing, but beautiful, pale blue with buckles. It has lots of zippy bits but looks quite lovely and un-baby like. Thing is, I can't be bothered to take all the stuff out when I am going out without ds and went to work today with a nappy, wipes, and a Hi-5 CD!! Made me laugh though...

use dds' backpack sometimes, other times have a brown leather handbag with shoulder strap... also have smaller black leather one with room for just keys and phone and wallet. ALso have a bright pink woven bag bought in singapore - big enough if I just have dd1 with me - a nappy, my bits and pieces and a cup and snack.

I remember that, cod - do believe it was pph's choice of bag which kicked it off

Hausfrau - I'm not surprised you haven't used it, lol!

sweetkitty · 11/02/2005 16:44

At present black DKNY handbag and grey mothercare changing bag for DD.

Had a bit of an addiction preDD and have about 10 handbags at least favourite one is a pink and denim Dior saddlebag bought off ebay for £80 Dp went spare until I showed him the same bag in Harrods for £450 so it was a bargain.

Newbarnsleygirl · 11/02/2005 17:18

I have a brown Louis Vuitton tote bag which I use everyday however it is not practical whilst out with dd as I have to hold it and it's not easy when your shopping and pushing a pushchair!

I have a plain black change bag from mothercare for all dd's stuff.
