Which are the best Disney videos for a 2 yr old?
bundle · 20/01/2003 18:18
I bought dd Dumbo for Christmas and have loved reminiscing about when I saw it as a child..and singing along to the songs. I'd now like to plough through the rest, although even the big stores eg HMV only seem to have a limited stock of certain videos. I'm not keen on the new-fangled ones, prefer the classics - so which do you think younger children prefer?
mckenzie · 20/01/2003 18:29
my 19 month old DS LOVES the Winnie the Pooh Classic (and I must admit that even I enjoy watching it and DH has been known to enjoy it too).
Wills · 20/01/2003 18:34
My dd changes her mind and has favourites that go on until you feel you know the entire script. I feel I could repeat snow white backwards - word perfect! In terms of what I would recommend.... Whilst she loved Snow White she was also a little scared by the evil Queen bits and I had to fast forward through these points (a bit annoying if the only reason you've put it on is to get dinner ready). At the same time my mother bought Dinosaurs for her (PG) (includes bits where they eat each other) and she absolutely loves it. She tells me that they're having dinner! We know have an entire house filled with dinosaurs and she knows far more about each one than I do (and I'm a ex-Geologist!). Unfortunately my mother didn't check the age limit first, put it on and then went and made a phone call - not sure I would recommend it. She also took to Peter Pan, Fantasia 2, Monster's Inc, and to our horror - SHREK. I say horror because she managed to get it to play when we weren't watching her and now one of my favourite films is being put through the mill! It starts to get to you after a while. Oh by the way dd's 2 yrs 10 months. Hope I've helped

Depends a bit what scares them, lots of disney films have quite scary bits. My ds1 (9)( who happily watches lord of the rings) really cant bear to watch "little mermaid" because he finds the sea witch too scary ! (of course the little ones torture him with this! Amazon used to have a good range of disney films. Cinderella is nice.
jac34 · 20/01/2003 19:10
My boys love Jungle Book, I love it too because of the songs. We have broad band, and DH has downloaded some of the Disney films, off the net.
hmb · 20/01/2003 19:17
Ds, who is 2 , prefers the computer animated films like Toy story, Bugs life, Shreck and Monsters inc. And at least theses have some 'adult' funnies that go over the heads of the kids, but amuse the parents
Marina · 20/01/2003 19:24
Our ds (3) loves Lady and the Tramp, especially the part with the spaghetti and meatballs. He insists on recreating the scene whenever we have spag bol at home.
Nothing too scary in it and a couple of very good songs. I'd recommend Jungle Book too!

For a two year old I would recommend 101 Dalmatians, The Aristocats and The Jungle Book. Saying that, they are rarely available new but look out for second hand ones at nearly new sales, car boots, etc! My dd has loved Cruella de Ville from an early age. Maybe she reminds her of me ...
janh · 20/01/2003 20:32
bundle, my younger daughter used to come home from nursery at 11.30, have lunch - same thing every day - and watch Mary Poppins, right through, every day, from 3 and a bit until she went to school.
Mind you she is currently (aged 17) a complete pain in the bum so that might not be a recommendation!
Agree with hmb about the computer animations - Toy Story (I and II), Bugs Life etc - brilliant for kids and adults. All the older cartoons had sad/scary bits, even Jungle Book. Sleeping Beauty is quite good and the evil one is not too bad.
Not Disney, but the old English Barney (with the old English sheepdog voiced by Tim Brooke-Taylor) used to amuse my DS2 for hours, if you could find one now?
Enid · 20/01/2003 20:38
Agree with Marina re: Jungle book and Lady and the Tramp - not too scary and good songs. Dd1 (3)loves Beauty and the beast (scary but excellent), Shrek (hilarious) and Stuart Little (1 and 2). The first disneys she ever watched were the Winnie the Pooh ones (although the one with the blue cover is pretty scary), Aristocats, and my personal fave, The Little Mermaid.
batey · 20/01/2003 21:04
Aristocats is great, no really evil moments and great music. Also Robin Hood is good. My dds love Little Mermaid, but dd1 knows how to ff the "scary lady!" Both dds love Cinderella too and there's nothing scary in that, it may just result in much dressing up and poncing around in "Ball Gowns!!!"
pluto · 20/01/2003 21:43
Monsters Inc and Shrek over and over and over again...ds is 3. Was mad keen on Winnie the Pooh for a long time.
Popparoo · 21/01/2003 08:38
Winnie the Pooh reigned supreme for almost a year in my home - there are at least 20 videos of his adventures...
Ghosty · 21/01/2003 08:58
Well ... everything has paled into insignificance since DS discovered Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ... He just LOVES is and won't watch anything else ... knows all the songs and adores the car!
Funnily enough considering that he is the biggest wussy la la on the block (see thread on 'Very sensitive toddler) he is not scared of the child catcher ... but he does know not to take lollipops off strangers!
CookieMonster · 21/01/2003 10:32
My dd (23 months) is completely addicted to Winnie the Pooh .... the copy we have was handed down from a cousin and is getting lots of white lines on it so I think I will have to buy a new one! I have persuaded her to watch The Little Mermaid a couple of times (for my own sanity) and she did like it but it was no competition for Pooh Bear .... damn, now I've got that song in my head again ...
Crunchie · 21/01/2003 12:59
Disney only release films for a certain time, hence you can't get all the classics. However at the moment I believe there is a good offer of three videos 'Lady and teh Tramp', 'Oliver's story' (?) and 'Prince & Pauper' I think, as a boxed set. I was thinking of getting the DVD's.
In our house Aritocats, 101 Dalmations, Lady & Tramp etc, but the new ones are great, as someone said they are funny as a parent too. My kids like Monsters Inc, Shrek, Ice Age. The 2 yr old love Ice age best!!
bundle · 21/01/2003 13:08
thanks everyone this is giving me excellent ideas. I initially thought of Bambi...but then thought of dying mother! I think Lady & Tramp/Aristocats might be next on the list, depending on what's available. I think you're right, Crunchie about the drip, drip availability...keeps us all hooked! the boxed sets might be good, but what is that Oliver's Story about???
Marina · 21/01/2003 19:27
Oliver's story is a reworking of Oliver Twist, set in New York, with kittens and puppies playing the main characters (according to the trailer on Lady and the Tramp). It looks to me like the sort of Disney feature that children will like but accompanying adult will be choking back vomit. Fairly bad-sounding Billy Joel-soundalike soundtrack, too...
bayleaf · 21/01/2003 19:57
Know what you mean about the Pooh song Cookie - My dh does an AWFUL rendition of it just to annoy me!
Katherine · 22/01/2003 18:25
Would also like to recommend Ice Age - can't think of any scary characters and only slightly scary in places so once they've watched it once they know what will happen. DD (almost 3) and DS 4.5 both love it.
BTW rather than spending a fortune and buying them all what about the library? That way you can vary the tunes for yourself a bit too. Its a good way to work out what the favourites are BEFORE you part with the cash.
Rhiannon · 22/01/2003 20:34
Not Pete's Dragon then? When everyone seems to be drunk all the time! Very politically incorrect these days!
Demented · 22/01/2003 20:42
Rhiannon, we've got Pete's Dragon, probably why I haven't contributed to this thread ('hangs head in shame' !
BTW my DS1 is now four and still not interested in Pete's Dragon.
