rear facing buggies

What is all this fuss about rear facing buggies being the latest thing? when my eldest was born 17 years ago ALL buggies had rear/ forward multi positional seats. In fact the bucket seats on the bugaboos and qunnys today are very much like the ones around years ago. The earlier versions ALSO folded down in one piece.I had a Britax which was a middle of the road model but all makes from the cheap mailorder catalogue models to the top of the range silver cross, all reversed. The maclaren superdreamer was fantastic, it reversed, folded really flat(easily) and was light as a feather- why maclaren dont bring that design back i dont know.
Anyone remember the Mothercare Allez- now that was a buggy ahead of its time. I bet that would be a best seller today!

LOL i wouldnt swap my front/rear facing climate controlled tempreture regulating all-singing-dancing-microwaves-yer-dinner chariot for a bone rattling teeth chattering dirty puddle grey maclaren

no way

bring dem fancy buggies on

unclefluffy · 31/07/2008 12:36

This thread makes me want to cry! You mean there used to be perfect buggies and they've been discontinued? WAAHH! I've been looking for something rear-facing, but I think I'm giving up. I also want air tyres for a comfy ride, a carry cot for a teeny-tiny to sleep in, and a small enough fold that I wouldn't feel embarrassed on public transport. Maybe I'll just decide never to go out. I can't pick a buggy. It's worse that choosing a mobile phone tariff.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 31/07/2008 12:39

this one might do the trick Unclecleffy

ScottishMummy · 31/07/2008 12:43

yes VGood recommendation.dream to fold buggy

Pinkchampagne · 31/07/2008 13:15

They certainly didn't have air tyres back then, so maybe not the perfect pushchairs, but there were loads of rear facing ones to choose from.

unclefluffy · 31/07/2008 13:26

Bigmouth, that's the one! Well, the Toro version, anyway. I've played with one and think it's fabby. But now dearly beloved has read a review about it falling over backwards on hills. It's one review. But we live on a hill. And it is now looming large in his mind! Maybe if I just keep really quiet he'll forget about it after a few weeks...

Loriycs · 31/07/2008 14:14

cheers Suwoo! actually they wernt 'oh my god look at that thing, looks '' Due do its ricketyness i took it to the tip as I thought it'll never resell only to be asked by another 'mature' mum if i still used it and if not could she have it. She was most dissapointed i'd dumped it. It was actually in lovely nick and didnt look like it had been bought for 50p, honest!!!Anyway each to their own. Another mum at ds school uses a giant silvercross tradional pram for her 15month old and i think that looks hideous and like something an old gypsie would use,but she loves it.Strawberries and cream I do have a picture of the britax one you mentioned but not sure how to post it on the site?

Would love to see a picture of the britax one if you can put a link on or something!

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 10:10

how do i do that??

heres another one from that era- the silvercross wayfarer, still see the latter models about occaisionally. Back in the early nineties they were everywhere. Sort of a cross between a traditional pushchair and a modern(at the time) buggy.Came in loads of colours/ fabrics and had enourmous sunshades.

lillypie · 01/08/2008 10:41

here

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 10:52

i shouldnt look at pictures of them. In my memory they were all lovely, but seeing some now they do look so dated!

OP posts:
blithedance · 01/08/2008 10:54

I have a wayfarer bought from another mumsnetter. It's a late model one so in a restrained black colour with a proper hood rather than the frilly canopy. It does look rather dated and boxy but functionally it's fantastic.

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 11:00

they were lovely to push

blithedance · 01/08/2008 11:03

Not bad for solid tyres but not as good as my Phil and Teds.

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 11:03

going back further, the maclaren original umbrella fold. Stripey seat like a deckchair. You always knew there was one coming as the wheels made a very distinctive sound.

scruffyy · 01/08/2008 20:28

Ahhh the Silver Cross Wayfarer - now they were a good model. They were really comfy with a wedge for the seat and the cosytoe was really padded too. The only issue they had was the coloured wheel discs popped off alot!
The Britax travel system that was mentioned earlier - would it be the Trio Travel System? I still have one in Teddy Biscuit complete with carrycot and car seat - one of the last types of bucket seated combinations of it's type. Ahhh those were the days!

Pinkchampagne · 01/08/2008 20:33

My friend had that britex teddy pushchair. Wasn't it one of the first travel systems?

strawberriesandcream01 · 01/08/2008 22:27

I nearly brought the silver cross wayfarer 6 years ago, the black one for DD but got a mutsy instead!
I also picked up a britax trio in blue and red, strawberry and apple or something similar pattern. Got it from a charity shop and then gave it back after a few months as felt funny pushing it and thought people were staring! Britax also did a really ancient one but cant remember it very well.
I love this thread!

CarGirl · 01/08/2008 22:30

I had a mothercare allez, only disadvantage of the older models was the like of hood so it was either framed raincover or sunshade, hood kind of does both!

Loved the silvercross wayfarer but due to bad back bugaboo is the easiest thing by far for me to push, dd is still rear facing at nearly 3 partly due to her speech delay!

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 22:30

Britax Elite. They did a red and grey version for mothercare and called it 'Taxi'

My eldes had a M&P Amico a lightweight version of the freestyler got one at a car boot recently in the same fabric, just had to have it and it is surprisingly very good much more compact folding & easy to steer.

Loriycs · 01/08/2008 22:38

Is she very small? My 18 month old,who is a little small for age but not much, already looks big and clumsy in hers, i think its because her legs gangle down due to lack of a foot/ calf rest. Agree with you its a dream to push. You should post a link of a photo of the Allez if you have one

OP posts:
Loriycs · 01/08/2008 22:40

oh yes its true about the lack of a hood back then. I think if they were re marketed in an updated version they would be a big hit, what do you think? It would be great to have rear facing styles that fold down as one piece

OP posts:
CarGirl · 01/08/2008 22:42

My dd is a bit above average for her height but I use my bugaboo without the hood fabric on just the bars for the raincover. She is getting too tall for most pushchairs tbh.
