Best 3 Wheeler Buggy for the Larger Toddler?

saltcod · 24/06/2008 09:31

DS about to grow out of his Vigour 3 Definitely not going to fit him this winter - he can barely move in it once he's got a winter coat on! So, I'm now looking for another 3 wheeler with a larger seat unit. Needs to be lightweight, swivel front wheel & (preferably) readily available secondhand! A forward/rear facing seat would be a bonus, but accept that this might not be possible.

Have been considering the mountain buggy urban but not sure if the seat will be big enough? I think I read it was a (maximum) of 38cm wide which doesn't look that big? Have also considered the Jane slalom pro as I know the old Powertrack 360 had a HUGE seat unit! Another one I've considered is the Urban Detour.... lots around 2nd hand for a good price, but seem to remember it's quite cumbersome?

So, what does everyone recommend, please ?

Hello,

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out strollers and buggies. Read our buggy reviews for a list of the best lightweight strollers around.

Hope that helps!

ah yes, forgot to say that's another I've looked at, but I think I remember reading that its most upright position wasn't very upright? And DS likes to sit bolt upright! Other than that, it looked spot on...

Jane Slalom, or the Jane Powertrack which you can pick up secondhand fairly reasonably. Huge seats, light to push although bulky folded.

i've seen 4 year olds comfortable in a mountain buggy. I love mine but will have to trade it in all too early i think for a doubler

Yeni · 24/06/2008 12:45

I've got a Quinny Freestyle 3XL which has a very spacious seat. The model I have was discontinued a few years ago but you can pick them up very cheaply on ebay.

mumo75 · 24/06/2008 13:24

ive got a quinny freestyle 3XL for sale
with raincover & footmuff
£80

Twelvelegs · 24/06/2008 13:27

I saw a Petite star Zia (£109 with raincover), although I think it's for up to four years. TBH I have never had a child of over three sitting in a pushchair and we're not giants and so I can't think of any massive ones!!
What are four year olds doing in buggys? No wonder the country has a problem with obesity!!

saltcod · 24/06/2008 18:14

Wow! Thanks for all the replies.

Well, DS is only 18 months, so I figure I've got another year or so of buggy use as I like to do a lot of walking (no obesity problems here, thank you ) and there's no way he'd be able to walk miles & miles yet!.

I'm very tempted by the MB urban but would have to order online, so don't want to spend such a huge amount of money only to find the seat unit really is too small and won't last him

I know the Jane definitely has a decent seat, but I didn't like the old powertrack, so hesitant about the slalom pro...

Hadn't considered the Quinny one... is the Freestyle the one with that weird tilting front wheel?

If you do decide on a mountain buggy, we have an urban that we're be getting rid of at some point soon (black). Let me know if you fancy it...
I'm pretty sure your ds would be fine in a MB mainly because there's no bar across the front and the seat is quite wide.

CarGirl · 24/06/2008 18:26

Is he very tall? I have an old style XTS twister and that has much more room than the MB, or urban detour. The phil & ted sport has loads of head room but little foot room.

mumo75 · 24/06/2008 19:21

yes quinny is the one with weird tiltiing wheel lol

misdee · 24/06/2008 19:32

i had my tall 4 year old in an Mb last year.

saltcod · 24/06/2008 20:40

DS isn't particularly long-legged (still only in 6-9m / 9-12m trousers), but he's very long in the body e.g. dungarees never fit him - poppers at the crotch always pop open, even when he's in a size or two up (and therefore needing the trouser bit rolled up ). So this makes him "tall" in a pushchair.. lol. He's also a little bit chunky... always eating, always hungry!

Thanks for all the suggestions. It looks like the MB Urban could be the one I also like the fact that its got a fairly short wheelbase for a 3 wheeler, so not too bad round town. The XTS twister looked good, but too long, I think. The Nipper 360 might be a possibility too...

Moomin, would you be able to let me have some info (price, condition, what accessories it comes with etc) on your MB if you do want to sell it? I'm on iona @ themings dot freeserve dot co dot uk Thank you!

I would avoid the urban detour as the footrest is too close to the seat so not much leg room sitting up and non if lying down

My jane powertracks seat is so wide that I've has two children in it sat side by side!

Oh, I'm a poet and I didn't know it

Neeerly3 · 24/06/2008 20:53

i think the nipper is the only one that goes above 15kg child weight (please correct me folks?!) I had the double nipper and love love loved it, seats could take up to 30kg each side - would have lasted them til they were 5 or so, but they are 3.5 now and we have another on the way so have downsized.

Yes the seats are bucket seats, and one of my DT's wasn;t keen to start with so shoved a cushion behind him to boost him, but after a while he wanted to chill like his bro so soon got used to the laid back look.

another one for the urban detour - bought on ebay about a month ago and DD is two and half, with some walking problems. it is fantastic, easy to push one-handed as i have carpal tunnel thingy going on too. Mumsnetters pointed me in that direction and they were spot on

winestein · 24/06/2008 22:31

Mountain Buggy - definitely Mountain Buggy.

My DS sounds similar to yours at his age (but without the chunk). The thing is with the MB seats is that they are a hammock style and have no structure to speak of (unlike the Jane) so width really isn't a problem. To put that into perspective when I took the buggy out last summer with said DS (prob one of the last times) his 9 year old, an somewhat chunky, cousin (wears age 10-12 clothes) took up residence in it for the entire trip as a substitute.

Try that in a Jane!

winestein · 24/06/2008 22:32

*and

Twelvelegs · 25/06/2008 08:00

For cheap look on ebay.

saltcod · 25/06/2008 12:05

Sadly, very view MB Urban's on eBay. They hold their price well too

"few" even

Ok, I've now seen a Jane Slalom Pro in ex. con for £100. Whereas I can't find even a 2nd hand MB Urban for under £300 (so might as well buy one new as less than £400 new). Should I go with the Jane... or will I regret it? £300 is v. steep...
