Ergos, Becos and other baby carriers

I bought an Ergo recently and really like it except that I wish DD was higher and also i find it impossible to do up the chest strap when she's on my front.

I've just tried a Beco and really like it. On my back she's so high she can just about see over my shoulder. In the ergo she's just staring at my back.

I think I want to sell my Ergo and get a Beco. Only thing is the hood is a bit rubbish compared to the Ergo's which is great.

Is there a third way I should be considering?

I'll try and hold out for the sling show in July and try a few then but just wanted to solicit opinion in the meantime.

I've got a Beco and I find it great for doing high back carries but I agree that the hood is useless. It wasn't so much the way it attached on to the body but the clips to attach it to the straps that drove me mad, rattling whenever I moved. I'm planning to improvise and recycle the mesh hood from a Patapum. I'm going to try to attach it with press studs and if that doesn't work I will make a new hood but it has to be detachable.

I'm hoping to go to the sling show too!

cheesesarnie · 23/06/2008 21:47

i vote ergo!

AnyFuleKno · 23/06/2008 21:51

alittleteapot · 23/06/2008 21:56

ooh i am interested in getting an ergo what colour is it, my ds4 is only 3mths but 18lb so i want to carry him on my back if possible, i already have 2 ring slings, a wilkinet, a close carrier and a wrap sling but a friend has an ergo and it looked good, cant justify buying another new sling tho... dp would have a fit

alittleteapot · 23/06/2008 22:21

it's brown. (earthy!). 18lb at 3 months . dd is only just over that now at 1! ergo would be good for you - really supportive for wearer. try on your friend's - like me you might find it a bit low, esp as he's so young.

Is it the organic one? Ergos sell really well on ebay.

mawbroon · 23/06/2008 22:30

I carry my 2.8yo ds in an ergo. He weighs 15kgs, and there is no way that I could manage him if he was higher up my back. I can feel the strain even if he is only a couple of inches too high.

Something to think about if you are looking to carry for a while yet.

alittleteapot · 23/06/2008 22:37

yes yeni it's the organic one. it's lovely...

mawbroon you're succeeding only in enticing me to keep the ergo AND buy a beco. oh dear.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 23/06/2008 22:39

Well, I could have done with two today when I went to the cupboard and found that DH had driven the car to work with the Ergo in the boot! Aaaargh

4madboys · 23/06/2008 22:41

ahhhhhh dam it and there was me thinking i had found a second hand one, i shall have to have a look on ebay.

i have tried my friends one but with my ds3 who is now 3, i liked it then and was tempted but didnt get one.

ds4 started off at almost 11lbs and he is very long in clothes for a 9mth old already.

i shall keep an eye out incase you change your mind

Yeni · 23/06/2008 22:41

I'd keep the Ergo if I were you, but I've never managed to get on with them. I'd love to get a look at the organic one because I've heard they're a bit softer than the non-organic versions and the stiffness of the Ergo was one of the things that put me off.

alittleteapot · 23/06/2008 22:54

yes it is softer. i love it apart from the lowness.

OP posts:
4madboys · 23/06/2008 22:58

just looked at the organic one online, they describe the brown one as 'chocolate' it looks lovely i quite like the look of the green one as well, the site i have found has the prices in dollars tho, not £.

i didnt realise you could do a hip carry with it as well, it looks like a nice alternative to a ring sling for that and i am pretty sure if i needed to i could still use it for ds3 (who is about 15kg) hmm off to hunt on ebay

alittleteapot · 23/06/2008 23:03

it is lovely. v pricey and feels like dd weighs nothing. i will go to sling show and try beco-alikes and prob buy myself just one more baby carrier, because i do love my ergo but i do love the way she can see over my shoulder in the beco...

OP posts:
4madboys · 23/06/2008 23:13

have found some on ebay and now have several on watch, gonna see what prices they go for etc

are you a member of slingmeet? i just joined there, am thinking about going to the summer sling show
and imo you cant have too many slings

mymblemummy · 24/06/2008 00:54

Can I chuck a spanner in the works and suggest a Calyx.
Available from: www.mamagear.com
And no you can't have too many slings.

alittleteapot · 24/06/2008 11:51

why would you go for the calyx mymble?

OP posts:
mymblemummy · 24/06/2008 22:20

I like it because the internal seat makes getting the baby into a back carry a piece of cake.

It's also very comfortable for both of us (well, I think he'd let me know if he wasn't happy) and frivolous though it sounds, very pretty.

The carry is quite low but it means I can carry him for ages, in fact, I forgot he was there the other day and spent a couple of moments wondering what I had done with the baby.

alittleteapot · 24/06/2008 22:52

Yes, the beco has an internal seat which is excellent. the ergo is already low so if i buy another one i def want the carry to be higher. i don't think it's frivolous to want a sling to be pretty - it's like wearing an extra top after all.

OP posts:
mymblemummy · 25/06/2008 23:44

Ah, I must find a Beco to inspect. As frivolity is ok, I do think Ergos look a bit dull.

And I have been hearing some funny things about the company.

I suppose a Beco, an Ergo and a Calyx would be over the top (and would leave no money for the summer sling show - which would be awful) .

alittleteapot · 26/06/2008 08:17

Yes, agree about the Ergo but after my beautiful Baby Hawk (which was wonderful for six months for hours of daily use) suddenly started to graze my hip! So finally succumbed to function. Beco have some pretty ones. Yes, should wait till sling show too
