Hi,

How much do you tip your hairdresser please especially if they own the salon?

Thank you.

10%

Cutleryclaire · 27/08/2025 08:00

Nothing. There’s loads of threads on this and the answers vary wildly from a bunch of die hard nothingers to those putting 10% on top of a £200 haircut!

I can’t barely stand to pay the cost of the haircut, never mind anything extra.

snowynight · 27/08/2025 08:02

My haircut costs more than £200 a pop so there's no way I'm tipping on top of that, and definitely not for the salon owner. If I have change I'll give a fiver to the junior who's blow dried my hair, but to my shame I regularly forget to bring the folding money.

Rocknrollstar · 27/08/2025 08:57

I tip the girl who shampoos my hair but I never tip the owner who does the cut and blow dry. If its an ordinary member of staff you are obliged to tip because they are on low wages and poor working conditions.

mondaytosunday · 27/08/2025 11:48

You don’t tip if they are the owner. 10% otherwise (though some give more) and a couple quid to the person who washes it.

catin8oot5 · 27/08/2025 11:50

I normally give mine a fiver only because she’s a fantastic colourist in a small village salon and the prices are insanely cheap. When I’ve been to Rush or equivalent in the past I never tipped.

No you're not obliged at all. They chose to do that job.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 27/08/2025 12:10

I go to a small privately owned hairdresser. She refused a tip when I offered, but her daughter does the best shampoo, condition, massage I've ever had, so i happily tip her. I've moved from a swanky expensive chain who gave mediocre cuts to her who is significantly cheaper and actually listens,so im happy.

81Claire81 · 28/08/2025 12:54

A tenner for the stylist. They work hard, do a good job.

shiningstar2 · 28/08/2025 12:57

About £3 if just a blow dry £5 if I'm having my roots done.

LavenderBlue19 · 28/08/2025 12:58

I don't. I always feel maybe I should, but it's a chain, my hairdresser is clearly fairly well off, and I feel really awkward just tipping whichever junior washes my hair. There aren't tip jars or anything to make it easier.

When I used to go to a small village salon I always did, 10%. But there were tip jars and it was a small business.

shiningstar2 · 28/08/2025 12:59

So the £3 is about 10% of blow dry coar. The £5 is a bit less than 10% for roots as cost for that plus blow dry is about £64.

WellyBellyBoo · 28/08/2025 13:00

Nothing. I've never seen anyone else tip either.

usedtobeaylis · 28/08/2025 13:01

I don't get particularly expensive haircuts etc so I most often tip between £7-£10.

This.

Nobody should tip. We have minimum wage in this country. And most of the experienced hairdressers I know are better off than me! I can barely afford a haircut these days.

KoalaBlue1 · 28/08/2025 13:03

My hairdresser small home salon charges me $25 Aus for a cut
I bump it up to $30. I guess that’s about 10 pounds tip
colour and cut is $105. I’m happy to give her $120

My hairdresser is self employed and bends over backwards for people. I will tip.

SocksShmocks · 28/08/2025 13:11

I always feel super awkward about this. My hair appointments are at a small chain and very expensive. I don’t tip. I do wonder if I should tip the junior who washes my hair but I rarely have cash these days. At Xmas I give my hairdresser a card with money inside.

hexsnidgett · 28/08/2025 13:15

Nothing, there's is no need to tip anyone in the uk.

Jennalong · 28/08/2025 13:19

My hairdresser " rents a chair " . I don't give her any tip as she drives a newer car than me , has her own home , is single and has loads of holidays in fab places multiple times a year .

tigger1001 · 28/08/2025 13:23

nothing. She rents a chair in the salon and is self employed - setting her own prices. She is expensive (worth it) but not adding a tip on top.

tedibear · 28/08/2025 19:20

Depends on various factors. I tip mine £5 for cut and blow dry but she is under pricing herself so I’m more than happy to give her extra. My nearest salon has got stupid prices for the same service, last time I tipped £3 and the hair cut was £52. If it were the owner I think I’d be less likely to tip anything to be honest.

Mydadsbirthday · 28/08/2025 20:21

I have stopped tipping because their prices have gone up so much (small chain). I'm now paying £28 for a wash and blow dry which I have about twice a month. Hair cut and blow dry is minimum £70 for the most junior stylist. I don't even bother having colour there as I'd rather spend the money on blow dries.

Iocainepowder · 28/08/2025 20:27

Nothing! No reason people should tip hairdressers and not tip anyone else who works for minimum wage.

I once worked as a bra fitter. Minimum wage. Included fitting post-surgery bras etc. We were always busy with me running in and out of fitting rooms getting choices etc. No reason to tip hairdressers over any other profession that offers services to someone.
