Need a highchair. All opinions welcome!

The way I see it, I have three options for a highchair for dd.

  1. Ikea Antilop which everyone tells me is great and is about ninepence but is a plastic seat on four sticks.

  2. Chunky plastic cheerful highchair with big tray suitable for smearing all kinds of everything all over.

  3. Tripp Trapp which costs a fortune which we haven't really got but I could probably swing it but everyone also says is great and looks pretty funky.

Help please

I used the ikea one from 6 months. My son wasn't sitting up independently till over 8 months but its quite supportive in abucket like way. Or you can buy a £3 inflatable cushion to go in it.

msappropriate I wonder if they were set for a child? The seat adjusts quite dramatically according to the height of the sitter it's intended for.

We have a TT and an Antilop - which is for visitors and travelling. DS (2) loves the TT and can climb up it to sit down, stands on it at the worksurface or sink, and pushes it round the kitchen to access the toaster or whatever. He went in it at 6 months, and sat better in that than in any other high chair.
Antilop is very easy to clean and pack, and also works as a garden chair.

My vote goes to the Antilop

Fantastic to clean - no corners!
Should you wish you can buy extra trays - good idea as sometimes the bit that clips it to the highchair breaks.

But once they learn how to climb out - and start to do so, you are in a fix. We used a harness to try to keep her in, but then that started to be ridiculous too.....

So since then my dd has chosen to sit on an Ikea step stool, her idea! - bekvam.
Fantastic - she can climb up and down, it was inexpensive and I can use it to reach high up stuff and sit on it too if she lets me
She loves her Bekvam

OK well MIL gave us a colourful plastic Mothercare one which dwarfs dd and is huge and pretty useless. So today I went out and bought...

An Antilop. I love it so much. Bought the cushion so dd was propped up and banging her little fists on the table like Henry VIII (just a shame she's not getting any solids till next weekend!). Got the tray as well but might not use it. £20 all in. Can't argue with that!

I'v got the ikea one and it is really good. Ok so it is not the most stylish but it sits in the corner out of the way, he is comfortable in it and it is very easy to clean. without the tray on it is the right height for our kitchen table and the feet don't scratch the floor.

The cushion was rubbish thought so that migrated to the garden for kneeling on and we got like this cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350056038588&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=02 2#ebayphotohosting
which is working much better.

We bought this one Bendy the Bent Wood High Chair from e-bay and it's been brilliant. I think it's like the Tripp Trapp but not the price. I love it and would thoroughly recommend it.

LaLaBingBong · 04/07/2008 15:21

Oops - I'm a bit slow - I see you've bought one already!

EyeballsintheSky · 04/07/2008 15:32

Ooh I like that one BingBong (great name btw!). I'm filing that chair away for when she's a bit older...

Anyway, if anyone's nosey and wants to see the brilliance of the Antilop vs the hugeness of the Mothercare then piccys are on profile.

my friend Ali got her highchair from 'freecycle' if that is any help

The Antilop is a great chair - your LO looks very content in it. See what you mean about the mothercare one. Definitely remember Bendy though. I just love the fact that our high chaor has it's own name (and song now too - don't ask!) Many happy meals to you and your LO.
