Need a highchair. All opinions welcome!

The way I see it, I have three options for a highchair for dd.

  1. Ikea Antilop which everyone tells me is great and is about ninepence but is a plastic seat on four sticks.

  2. Chunky plastic cheerful highchair with big tray suitable for smearing all kinds of everything all over.

  3. Tripp Trapp which costs a fortune which we haven't really got but I could probably swing it but everyone also says is great and looks pretty funky.

Help please

Tripp trap lasts forever- makes a good desk chair or kitchen chair for an adult.

Antilop is the way to go if you're just wanting a cheap high chair for baby.
It's really easy to clean, but it won't push under our table when not in use, so takes up lots of space.
The screw on ones are good. Our communal garden has one on the picnic table, it's fabbo.

SlightlyMadSweet · 26/05/2008 23:57

Antilop pushing under your tabl....depends how high your table is

AggiePanther · 26/05/2008 23:58

Tripp Trapps don't just last until the child is 7, they last to adulthood see here

AggiePanther · 27/05/2008 00:00

Oh sorry that was supposed to link to the page which showed the tripptrapp as an adult chair

Sazisi · 27/05/2008 00:01

I shouldn't think the cushions are really necessary for the Tripp Trapp? I don't find wooden chairs in the least uncomfy, and I'm not wearing a feckin nappy!

PInkyminkyohnooo · 27/05/2008 00:05

Obviously, Slight! It doesn't fit under our wooden Ikea table which I find a little but we use it for visitors (baby ones) and on hols. It's a good design, I think.

AitchTwoCiao · 27/05/2008 00:06

ah no, sushi. what i say is that to me the only choices were tripp trapp or antilop (fabric seats so booster a no no).

if you are skint, get the antilop.

if you are loaded, get the tripp-trapp.

on a day to say basis there's not much to choose between them, but if you buy the tripp-trapp you can, ahem, use it for ages or so they say. if you buy the antilop you can just buy a long-legged seat from ikea when the time comes and you are still well ahead on cost.

MrsThierryHenry · 27/05/2008 00:07

Ikea Antilop - brilliant. We've used it for a year and never had a complaint. Easy to get in and out of it, no dodgy corners for food to get stuck in. It's great having a tray table if you want it, but you can also remove it and have your baby sitting at the table.

EyeballsintheSky · 27/05/2008 00:12

Bugger. Wrote big long reply and phone quit

I'm more confused than ever now! Think I'll take dd to the shops and let her choose! Think I can bribe a 4 month old to head for the TT?

AitchTwoCiao · 27/05/2008 00:18

you want the tt, get the tt...

EyeballsintheSky · 27/05/2008 00:19

But I'm not sure that I do really. That's the problem.

AitchTwoCiao · 27/05/2008 00:27

well the good thing about the ikea one is that you can give it a test run in the cafe, see how comfy dd finds it.

EyeballsintheSky · 27/05/2008 00:33

Oh well now you've just given me an excuse to scoff meatballs a good place to do some road testing.

Ah, sorry Aitch for putting words in your mouth! I always see you on highchair threads extolling the virtues of Ikea!

I reckon if you really want the tripp trapp and buy the ikea, you'll end up feeling dissattisfied and buy the tripp trapp anyway.

WilfSell · 27/05/2008 16:48

I agree with Aitch - there are only two chocies really.

I have a Tripp trapp AND an Antilop. The three yo is still in his TT and couldn't bear to depose him for the youngster. But we couldn't quite afford another one just yet.

With DS1, many moons ago, we had some kind of monstrous padded, clippy, bumpy thing. god I spent days picking out solidified weetabix and concrete peas from the gaps in the PVC. And the straps! Ugh. It was a massive waste of money. By DS2 we had learned our lesson.

The wipeability will become The Most Important Thing, I promise you. You can get padded inserts for both if you think they're a bit firm.

AitchTwoCiao · 27/05/2008 20:18

totally agree, sushi, i think if you want the tt you should get it. just don't tell me that it represents excellent value etc etc compared to the ikea one cos it doesn't. what it is, however, is a purtier thing in your house, and for some people that's v important.

TheBlonde · 27/05/2008 20:21

go for the tripp trapp

I bought it for DC2
Had a east coast folding wood one for DC1 which is rubbish in comparison
Also have a basic one from Mothercare at Grandma's

Hulababy · 27/05/2008 20:24

Tripp Trapp - have had one in near dialy use for nearly 6y. Still in fatastic condition. Been an excellent buy.

peachygirl · 27/05/2008 20:29

I'm in the antilop gang. I think it's great. We originally were given a wooden one from SIL but DD really slumped in it. My parents bought an antilop and as DD sat in it well I got one too. I use a booster cushion from mothercare.
I too would like a trip trap type chair and am intrigued by the idea of buying one for when DD is older.
What good thinking!

PussinJimmyChoos · 27/05/2008 20:32

I've got a Chicco Happy Snack. I really like it and the storage part is excellent for flinging toys in when you are having a quick 'unexpected guest' clean up! However, the only drawback is cleaning all the nooks and crannies and the straps. I do hoover the high chair regularly (yes honestly - saves picking it all out with your fingers!) and wash the straps in the machine so its not too much of a faff, but its something to consider. The recline feature is lovely as in the early stages of weaning, I could recline DS for his bottle after a feed which he really loved

Spoo · 28/05/2008 18:51

Heres a link to the Svan I think this is a think a good contender to the tripp trapp though similar price. Ours looks great after 3 years.

msappropriate · 28/05/2008 19:00

am not sure that 1 and 2 are much different cos the ikea one has a tray. Its less colourful but is far easier to clean than a folding one. Having had one of each I would go with ikea every time. Never had teh sort of money for a trip trap and given the amount of mess my kids make on a table I like it having its own tray.

msappropriate · 28/05/2008 19:04

also everyone says the trip traps last till adulthood but I was at a party with someone with 2 trip traps (they may have been cheap copies I didn't look closely) but adults were standing or sitting on the ground to avoid sitting on them. They looked to have the same amount of room for ones bottom as the average bus shelter bench.

foxythesnowfox · 28/05/2008 19:08

The Ikea one without a doubt. Fold up ones are hard to clean and get rank and stinky. The Ikea one is easy to clean and light to move.

EyeballsintheSky · 28/05/2008 21:07

Oh blimey, you lot don't make it easy! I was hoping you'd all come back with the same answer!

What sort of age can the Ikea one be used from? As it won't recline presumably DD will need to be supporting herself very well?
