Toyota Yaris vs Honda Jazz - anyone have one and love/hate it?

We are going to need an inner-city runabout soon, and these are the obvious choices.

One baby, who will be about nine months old by the time we get it, so particularly interested in the usual child-related stuff like boot space, safety locks, rear visibility etc.

Husband is traumatised by the loss of his youth and can't believe that we getting rid of his ridiculous two-door coupe to get a Japanese tissue box on wheels.

Cheers, drivers of economical reliable city cars!

yaris's boot is teeny and the jazz is pretty big. i've got a jazz and love it, i must say.

PinkPussyCat · 19/05/2008 09:38

I had a Yaris and loved it! Didn't think the boot was too teeny... and the back seat can push forward to make it bigger if need be. Never had any problems. Great wee car

Daihatsu Sirion is great too, and the tax is something ludicrous like 30 quid!

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 10:17

what buggy could you get in there? i couldn't get mine in my pal's yaris, but it fitted in my ancient fiat panda at the time.

TeriHatchetJob · 19/05/2008 10:19

Have you thought about the new Ford Fiesta. Lots of things come as standard, very reliable and safe and very roomy for a small car and even probably cheaper that the two you mentioned (and it looks a lot better too!)

CountessDracula · 19/05/2008 10:22

My mum has a Jazz and loves it

mrsbabookaloo · 19/05/2008 10:25

My mum has a jazz and we had terrible trouble getting a car seat to fit it: the belt anchors were too long. Maybe newer models don't have this problem. Ended up having to buy a stupidly expensive and stupidly heavy one.

PinkPussyCat · 19/05/2008 10:31

Um, i should have probably mentioned it was pre-children, Aitch. But my neighbour's daughter has a yaris and she has a toddler + a wee baby... seems to manage ok... must ask her which buggy she has!

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 10:49

it must be an old one, my mum has one and so do i and never encountered any difficulties. min'es 6 year old and my mum's was older, mind you. i use isofix but my mum uses a maxi-cosi.

horsemadgal · 19/05/2008 13:09

SIL has a Jazz and loves it.
She can get an umbrella buggy and 2 kids bikes in the boot.

kookykid · 19/05/2008 13:28

I got rid of my Yaris when my dd was born as it was only 3-door. I loved it and was gutted! The boot is small, but can fit most buggies on their side (you won't get much else in though!). If I'd had a 5-door I would have kept it. Brilliant for fuel economy and as a city car.

mrsbabookaloo · 19/05/2008 13:28

My mum's is also about 6 years old. I think we maybe had an over-cautious car-seat fitter!

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 13:31

what a pain that they didn't just point out the isofix fittings...

ninedragons · 19/05/2008 13:47

Blimey, thanks for all the responses.

I hadn't considered the Daihatsu or the Fiesta, but will do some research and give them some thought, so thanks Pink & Teri. The other one we were thinking of was the VW Polo.

I don't like the Jazz at all (don't have one, but have borrowed MIL's). It is not much fun to drive, and a bit lacking in acceleration for my taste (may not matter if you are only driving around in a city).

Boot space is good. Rear visibility not great if you are short (head rests in line of vision).

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 14:00

i agree on that score actually, i keep my head rests in the boot. dunno about acceleration etc as am devoutly a city driver. i'm sure you'd notice going down from a sports car to a jazz or yaris, definitely.

NoBiggy · 19/05/2008 14:04

The Jazz is lacking in acceleration. Compared to my 1.4l Fiesta it seems slow. But whereas I may have once or twice gone to overtake something inthe Fiesta and suddenly found myself doing 80, with the Jazz, that won't happen. Or driving at night on an empty motorway, I won't glance down and see I'm doing 100+.

To me, this is a good thing.

Bags more room in the back of the Jazz, and cheaper. Insurance and tax cheap too.

MuffinMclay · 19/05/2008 14:07

I'd go for a Fiesta, and am planning to get one (or a Focus) later in the year when the new one comes out.

If you want very economical, how about a Suzuki Swift? Was reading yesterday that a diesel one can do 62mpg. Also very cheap to buy.

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 14:12

the suzuki swift is also highly regarded by the top gear team i believe.

pootleflump · 19/05/2008 14:13

I have a Yaris, though I was set on having a Jazz until I test drove it- have never been so disappointed in a test drive. Also I really wanted a diesel and they don't do them.

The Yaris boot is too small but is wide so will fit any buggy- I have a maclaren techno xt which is probably the longest buggy you can get and it fits fine.

savoycabbage · 19/05/2008 14:16

I love my Yaris and can fit my buggy into it. Also the bike with stabilisers of my 4 year old. I also used to fit my mamas and papas pram chassis in the boot and the top part on the passenger seat which is not ideal but I love that car and did want a big'un.

Ambi · 19/05/2008 14:17

I loved my yaris but the boot was tiny, I wouldn't recommend with babies. Mum has a jazz, nice car but the boot didn't seem much bigger, but it must be judging by the comments. Both nice cars and will last for ages, plus Honda have a better warranty.

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 14:31

the jazz boot is about twice as big as the yaris, i think. plus there's all sorts of pleasingly fancy things you can do with flipping up passenger seats if you are short on room.

Cappuccino · 19/05/2008 14:34

exactly what countessdracula said

AitchTwoCiao · 19/05/2008 14:35

it is a total grandma's car isn't it? lol. i got one cos my mum loves hers so much.

Cappuccino · 19/05/2008 14:36

my mum chose it because it is big enough to fit dd's wheelchair in the boot
