Cordless vacuum that’s good for pet hair?

BetterWithPockets · 19/03/2025 22:18

Posted recently about the very lovely golden retriever we inherited at the end of last year… He’s gorgeous but very blonde and sheds CONSTANTLY.
As a result, we’re looking for a cordless vacuum cleaner that’s good for pet hair — especially long retriever hair! — on carpets, mainly. Have done some research online but would love some personal recommendations, if anyone has any please. Would rather not spend £500 or so then find out it’s no good for what we want it for! (TBH, would rather not spend £500, but would for the right vacuum.)
Thank you!

Ha! I hear you: you only have to LOOK at our retriever and he sheds! It’s a new experience for me, despite decades of dog ownership…

Photo of the offender. He isn't even moving, but there will be a pile of hair left behind when he does.

I know this isn't what you're asking and I live in a small flat so it's doable. But I use one of the slicker brushes on the carpet (the dog hates being brushed but the carpet is less disobedient) to get up the worst of it and then hoover afterwards.

Ooh, not heard of those. Will investigate! There’s one room in particular with a darkish carpet that I really struggle to keep clean, so I don’t necessarily need something to cover a big space, if that makes sense. Thank you.

The kitten spends his days on top of me too so I'm possibly just immune to the sight of hair as everything is constantly furry. I'm pretty sure there's less hair on the animals than there is on me and the floor!

GoFaster83 · 20/03/2025 14:23

It's spiky as hell! Watch your fingers but it's great at pulling hair out of the carpet!

I hav an AEG animal. The best one I have had in decades - including better than Dyson or Miele. And that is for a long haired Border Collie who sheds all the time.

I have another alternative method for you in that case. I use either blue latex gloves, or gloves from Toolstation / Screwfix like these:

The rubber brings hair out of rugs, carpet, cushions, furniture etc.

Just brush your hand across in a single direction and watch all the hair lift out.

It is a car detailers trick and works amazingly well.

Ah, interesting! Sometimes I use my slippered foot (rubber sole) to ‘brush’ hair into one big pile so I can collect it. Hadn’t realised it was a thing!

@BetterWithPockets we took the plunge and went for the Bosch Unlimited 10. So far, I am very pleased. Battery life appears to be good, suction is excellent, it turns power up and down by itself depending on the floor type, and it vacuums in both directions (the Dyson only did so on push, and not on pull).

Admittedly our Dyson is a V7 so quite old now, however I have replaced the battery. As I said up thread, I didn't think these cordless vacuums were capable of anything more than an in between spruce up, but I have high hopes that the Bosch may prove me wrong.

I reserve the right to update this, as we are only 24 hours in, but it has handled the self propelled fur spreader labrador hair quite happily.

Ah, interesting. I’ve been reading the reviews and they seem generally good. I think I may take the leap!

Several things pushed me into a decision:

  1. I could have been indecisive for months more and would have continued to have been more and more pissed off with only being able to vacuum half a room before the Dyson battery gave out (despite it being new).
  2. I have the belief that most modern vacuums have improved a good deal since we purchased said Dyson. Re point 1, I could have spent a long while comparing and never making a decision.
  3. The ability to easily buy an additional battery and charge it independently.
  4. I saw a back to back comparison of the newer Dyson against the Unlimited 10 which showed the Bosch as a clear winner.

@BetterWithPockets 48 hour update (and probably the last one unless anyone asks).

It is now mounted to the wall, which was very simple to do. There is a horizontal bar that mounts behind the bracket that holds the actual vacuum which enables all the tools to be stored right next to the vacuum. Most do this, but not with the level of flexibility. I could adjust everything in multiple directions enabling placement to be exactly where I wanted it. The vacuum does stick out from the wall a fair amount when stored and charging, but this isn't a problem for where ours is sited. It might be if you wanted to put it where there is through traffic.

Also, the lead that connects to the mains is easy to fit, and is separate to the additional charger supplied, so it is possible to charge the battery while the vacuum is in the docking station, or to remove the battery and charge it independently. This enables a spare battery to be charged either at the same time the vacuum is docked, or while it is being used. Very handy, although I suspect the separate charger is faster than the docking station.

I have vacuumed several times in the last few days, having had my own dog and several visitors, and I am still pleased. I have emptied it several times, and cleaned the filter which is very simple. Dog hair, in my experience, eventually blocks everything, but everything appears to be easily accessible and hence easy to clean.

The other nice touch is that the long attachment with the rotating brush stands up by itself when not attached to the vacuum (when using the crevice tool), so can just be left on the floor under the docking station, or wherever you happen to be. And the rotating brush is easy to remove in the event of any tangles.

I have recently replaced my v old Dyson (one of the first hand helds) with a v11. The motorised "main" head is great with both mine and the cat's hair. I got a great deal and paid about £350, I think. It is heavier than my old one, but that's because the battery and the collection bin are bigger. It's much, much more powerful, too, and I use it as the "only" vacuum - my old one wasn't quite good enough to totally replace my corded one.

BetterWithPockets · 03/04/2025 15:23

Thank you, @CapabilityBrownsHaHa and @HappiestSleeping. I’ve borrowed a friend’s V7 and have become obsessed! I can whizz over the big rug in our sitting room really quickly, and it looks the same as it does after I’ve laboured on it for ages with our (admittedly VERY old) corded Miele. (Although the light is frankly terrifying! Useful but terrifying!) Have ordered a V10…
The only drawback as far as I can see is that as soon as my retriever lies back down, the hairs gather again… I might have to ban him from the rug!

Oh wow, if you love the V7, you will love the newer ones even more. Our V7 is still going strong, but the new ones are different again.

Let us know how you get on 👍

I can’t tell you how excited I am now, @HappiestSleeping, at the prospect that the V10 is EVEN better. Will definitely let you know how it goes!
