Is there such thing as a great big stick contraption that can open very high velux windows?

I've got 2 velux windows, one in our dining area and the other in the bathroom.
They have never been opened in all the time we have lived in this house, so about 2 years.
The bathroom one is more important as its the only window in there.

But because they're so high up you can't get them open. Not even step ladders get you high enough.

There must be something out there that would open them or people sensible enough to not have them fitted that high to start with?

I thought the title said great big stick "contraception"

marmadukescarlet · 03/05/2008 10:36

Yes, I've used one at the holiday accom we go to.

It has a hook on the end that one uses to pull down the shades or open window by 'hooking' the silver bar.

Try the velux website??

big stick contracepton

ouch

Velux website.
Why did I not think of that!

We have Fakro windows, not Velux but we have a big long stick with a sort of eyelet bit at the end that you hook over the handle and open the window with. Very useful.

Where did you get that from duck?

Just had a look on the velux site but you have to state the model number which is on the inside wood part of the window

this is what you need

RubberDuck · 03/05/2008 10:41

Got ours from the builders who installed the windows - not much help, I know

RubberDuck · 03/05/2008 10:43

Time to borrow a stepladder?

Or alternatively take a photo of the handle bit, send it to Velux and get them to tell you which is likely to work!

Nbg · 03/05/2008 10:46

The one in the bathroom is directly above the bath and I've just stuck the step ladders in and theres no way I can get anywhere near them.
Dh wouldnt even be able to reach.

FFS!

The photo idea is good.
Will have to try that I think.

Just going to check out that link.
Thank you.

Thats what I've looked at duck.

The previous owners of this house must have been on anohter planet.

I'd need double the height of step ladders if I were to get anywhere near it.

Ugh... I'd try the photo idea.

If you can find some sort of pole with a hook to temporarily open it, you could "launch" a camera up there with a long tripod using the timer function and see if you can get a photo of the code needed

RubberDuck · 03/05/2008 10:51

these any good? Is it a bar you're having to knock down to open (in which case practically any pole with a hook will do regardless of model - just don't spend too much in case hook isn't big enough) - or a handle you have to grap and twist?

Ours is a handle, hence you hook the hole onto the handle and twist. A bar just requires a stick with a hook but may need to be sturdier as you're putting more force on it?

Nbg · 03/05/2008 10:52

Yes its a handle that would need lifting up if that makes sense.

Lol at the timer

OP posts:
Nbg · 03/05/2008 10:54

Nope none of them would do it.

Its not the bar across its just a silver handle. Looks a bit like a door handle.

Had a great idea - have you got an old fashioned iron mongery type store near you? (Or even a B&Q type place, thinking about it)?

Just go and ask - they're bound to have them in stock, or if not, the ironmongery bit and a piece of wood you can bolt it on to?

RubberDuck · 03/05/2008 10:54

Right - that's the same as mine then ... will find the relevant bit - hang on.

RubberDuck · 03/05/2008 10:56

Sounds like you don't have a true Velux window without the bar then - I bet you have a Fakro window...

RubberDuck · 03/05/2008 10:58

Right their proper name is a "control rod" ... still googling.

RubberDuck · 03/05/2008 10:59

here - though I suggest phoning first to check if you can return if it doesn't work as pricey

Nbg · 03/05/2008 11:38

Aww thanks duck.

Its such a pita.

Those on that last link dont look compatable with our windows.

I could have a look at B&q although I'll get dh to go rather than me.

I'll email Velux too with a photo of the window.
