Vinted - just fucked up

Anyone else have issues with vinted? I encounter so many sellers who describe the item as “very good” or size 10. When it shows up the items is in terrible condition or the sizing is wrong.

if the seller disagrees with you, then as a buyer there is absolutely nothing you can do. Vinted doesn’t help, doesn’t make
judgement, just takes the ‘buyer protection fee’ and leave seller and buyer to scrap it out. Usually resulting in 0 stars going both ways, even if the buyer has done nothing wrong.

im getting really pissed off with vinted.

recently the site is full of scammers setting up for 24 hours. They sell designer stuff for odd low figures, like £3.68, and only
accept card payments. If you’re foolish enough to buy something, by morning they’re gone. Vinted policy states ‘WE do not take responsibility for scammers’! So again Vinted to fuck all.

also, you can’t sell period related products like new period pants as these are classed as ‘extreme items’. 50% of the population need period products but vinted think it’s extreme. What kind of messed up patriarchal BS is that?

Well I sympathize with you re scammers (and Vinted should take more precautions re ID checks etc) but in terms of sizing and stuff the phrase “buyer beware” applies really. One of the ridiculous things about eBay was how it tried to treat independent sellers clearing out stuff as though they were professional retailers, making them insist on taking returns etc. I’ve always treated buying second hand online as taking a punt - you pay £4 for a pair of jeans or whatnot and have to accept sometimes it’s not going to be perfect.

modgepodge · 22/12/2024 21:41

Don’t vinted hold the money until you say you’ve received the item and it’s ok? So how do scammers disappear after 24 hours with your money?

Agree re period products - it’s the same with reusable nappies. There’s a huge market for these on Facebook but I can’t sell them on vinted, which I find far easier to manage than posting on random Facebook groups, unless I lie and say they’re brand new, which is misleading as they’re not. I’m guessing they’re concerned about hygiene but it’s ridiculous cos anyone buying second hand nappies/period products understands what they’ve been used for and presumably knows how to wash them!

new period pants. I’ve tried to sell a box of them - new in packaging, and they get removed.

and no, vinted take the buyer protection fee. If the seller disagrees, then they see it as a dispute between buyer and seller, and they have no responsibility. Their ‘job is done’ as far as they’re concerned.

Loads of scammers set up for 24 hours. If you go on now, you’ll see people selling designer goods, like M&S new coats, Their Nibs Pyjamas, Elemis products. They set up a payment system so you have to use your debit card, then by the morning they’re gone with your money. Vinted rules that in these cases, you have to ‘contact your bank to resolve’ and then of course you have a lengthy process for a few pounds, so you don’t bother. Meanwhile the scammers have made hundreds of pounds in a night. Vinted do NOTHING. It’s so frustrating.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 22/12/2024 21:51

One way to avoid the scammers, apart from noticing how low and odd the price is, is to look at whether they have sold before. Also, if you look at the background in the photos it's often different, as they're photos stolen from another listing.

But they don’t release the money if you don’t confirm delivery, so how does this work as a scam?

DILLEYDALLEY · 22/12/2024 21:56

I bought a counterfeit item from vinted by accident. They asked for photos and reasons why I thought it was counterfeit and did a bit of an investigation. Sided with me and refunded the money. I was actually quite impressed!

GoingRoundInOvals · 22/12/2024 22:00

As PP said - what are you on about? Vinted hold the money until you click "everything is ok", so if you never receive the item or it's not ok, you get your money back.

And what are you going on about regarding the "they set up a payment system"....?? Payments go through Vinted. Yes your debit card may be attached to your Vinted account, but you're not directly paying the sellers. Unless you're going off piste and sending them money through an unauthorised link?? In which case, more fool you

GreyBlackBay · 22/12/2024 22:03

When I bought something from one of these scammers I noticed because when I went back to view the item I got a message saying it didn't exist. Messaged vinted and they gave me my money back even though seller had marked it as dispatched.

With regards to condition I think anything beyond 'new without tags' is open to interpretation. I always buy a variant of new and have had no issues getting a return authorised if the item is marked or damaged or obviously worn.

For everything else I would only pay a minimal amount where I would be happy to put it in the charity bag if it disappointed. I've done that a fair bit but have also had some absolute bargains so I'm definitely up on the experience.

What I really hate about vinted is the forced sizing eg Medium is also a 10. If the seller doesn't specify or picture the label you're taking a punt on sizing.

Newmumburnout · 22/12/2024 22:41

I personally love vinted, I have bought and sold alot. I don't buy expensive things and maybe that's why I have not had an issue. I also only buy from sellers who have reviews and a good set of photos. I usually look at what else they are selling which can indicate some one dodgy. If the photos are not clear enough to show it's full quality then I don't buy

Gambino1726 · 22/12/2024 22:43

Moltenpink · 22/12/2024 21:55

But they don’t release the money if you don’t confirm delivery, so how does this work as a scam?

Because the scammers set up a request for unique payment system. In that they only accept direct debit.

if you have an account go on and check out. Ive noticed it happens in the night, like after midnight. I’ve reported a few, then when I get the feedback from vinted it says ‘we can’t do anything as the seller removed their account’ so they will ah e received the direct debit (from multiple buyers in the night) and then don’t post anything.

And what’s more annoying is I listed some nappies and they sold. Weirdly the seller then cancelled the order and then my listing was deleted and vinted said it’s not allowed ?! So I don’t know if the seller changed their mind and reported it! Or if it was a coincidence But loads of other people are still selling them on there.

Blarn · 22/12/2024 22:47

I've only ever had one real issue with an unwashed stained jacket which I returned at my expense as I wasn't dealing with it.

I go with lots of good reviews, detailed description sand photos. Occasionally take a chance on no reviews if the other two things are there.

TrollTheAncientYuletideCarol · 22/12/2024 22:50

I had an unsatisfactory item that was clearly unwearable, I took photos, sent them to Vinted and they refunded me straight away. They don't intervene where the dispute is more disputable, if that makes sense.

You can't expect Vinted to intervene if you buy a size 10, the label says size 10 but it doesn't fit. One of the huge problems of online buying is that the sizes are not standard at all, I buy things knowing that and resell them immediately if it doesn't fit.

I tend to check out sellers now, and see what else they are selling and their track record, and so far haven't been scammed.

I'd like to use Ebay but their new second-hand 'preloved' interface is unusable and Vinted's is good, so I'm sticking with it. My dd sells on Depop and says that interface is rubbish as well.

BananaNirvana · 22/12/2024 22:50

Have had no issues at all. You do take a risk with sizing but if stuff doesn’t fit I resell it. I’ve had a couple of issues with sellers but Vinted have sorted it quickly both times in my favour.

As a seller you can set multiple ways for someone to buy an item. These are:
Valid credit/debit cards
Apple Pay
Vinted Balance
Google Pay

I’ve copied this directly from Vinted.

Yes.... but the seller doesn't get the money immediately from the Apple pay or Google pay or Vinted balance or whatever they've set up. It goes into the Vinted "holding pen" for money.

until someone clicks "item ok" or "I have an issue"

the only way I can see someone could be scammed like this is if the seller sends a direct message to the buyer saying "oh, use this link to pay instead" which leads them to putting in their card details. Which as I said, more fool them

Exactly this. You're paying Vinted, not the seller directly. If you don't receive anything or mark what you've received as ok the seller doesn't get paid.

MidnightMeltdown · 22/12/2024 23:25

Bought once on Vinted. The item was described as new but when it arrived I could see that it had clearly been used. Vinted then expected me to pay for the return!

Never again. EBay is much better imo.

Merrow · 22/12/2024 23:30

Yeah, it's the paying for the return that gets me - there was a mark on an item I bought that when I looked at the photos again was hidden by how it was folded. Really annoyed me that the only solution offered was to return it at my cost

surreygirl1987 · 22/12/2024 23:32

OP, I fully agree with you. What really grates is that the buyer needs to pay return postage to return an item if not as described. I had an awful experince the other day when I bought an item advertised as new, which was very much clearly used. Despite getting refund, I was expected to pay for return postage, lost my buyer protection fee, and ended up with a 1-star review from the seller who took offence. Unbelievable.

But you aren’t paying the seller directly, you pay Vinted and then they release the funds to the seller once you give the ok to do so, so I’m not 100% sure what your issue even is? Also it should be obvious common sense not to buy from anyone who has just joined the site, has no reviews, and is selling things for weird prices..

TrollTheAncientYuletideCarol · 23/12/2024 00:19

I'm puzzled by your complaints, OP. You don't pay by direct debit the seller on Vinted, they give you postage options like Post Office, InPost collect, delivery.

Gambino1726 · 23/12/2024 00:19

I’ve added two images of examples that have just popped up now. Honestly I don’t understand how they’re making money. But there are literally hundreds of listings like this at the moment.
