Does everyone use Amazon Prime?

Hi All, We have a small business selling on Amazon that I started when pregnant, 10 years ago. It has become a monster that Amazon feeds on and hands us the pennies at the end :(
If anyone has time, could you answer my 3 questions below as we are trying to gauge if its worth pulling out?

1, Is Amazon the first place you look for something you specifically want?

2, Will you then google the item to check price on other sites?

3, Will you hit the filter button to only buy with Prime or would you buy from a smaller supplier on Amazon if cheaper?

I have Prime myself so am fully aware how bloody convenient it is but answers would be very much appreciated

Mods - If this post is a problem, please let me know and I will remove :)

I did this the other day where I found something on prime but it wasn't quite the right colour. I then googled and found it sooo much cheaper elsewhere. I was surprised but then once postage was added it ended up the same price!

Generally I would only search online if I couldn't get what I wanted on prime or if it was a very specific item from a shop who don't sell on Amazon. We're doing the kitchen at the moment and I got most items NOT on prime - handles, radiator, tap, blind, tiles etc. where I would get those things from an online shop which specialises.

PrincessOfPreschool · 21/10/2024 10:56

I use the prime filter button if I'm in a hurry (most common!) but other times I sort by price.

Hoplolly · 21/10/2024 10:57

1, Is Amazon the first place you look for something you specifically want?

No - I shop around, it depends on urgency. If I need something quick I'll get it from Amazon.

2, Will you then google the item to check price on other sites?

No not generally

3, Will you hit the filter button to only buy with Prime or would you buy from a smaller supplier on Amazon if cheaper?

Yes I often filter by Prime only as I feel I am already paying for delivery. Another £2.99 fee for postage would probably put me off buying.

1, Is Amazon the first place you look for something you specifically want?
Yes, always.

2, Will you then google the item to check price on other sites?
3Iwould probably check the price on Google.

3, Will you hit the filter button to only buy with Prime or would you buy from a smaller supplier on Amazon if cheaper?

I always filter for amazon prime only because of the fast delivery
If something was cheaper somewhere else, say Argos if it wasn't a huge difference I would probably still use amazon because the delivery would be faster and I've always found amazon returns really easy and reliable.
Plus I pay for prime already so I want the postage included, if postage is extra on amazon I wouldn't buy. I'd feel ripped off 😅

Noisyplace · 21/10/2024 10:58

I don't have prime. And only buy from Amazon if I'm getting several things so it goes over the threshold for free delivery. If one small item I go to an actual shop or look on eBay/Etsy.

Moier · 21/10/2024 10:58

My daughter has prime.. so if l want something from Amazon l ask her to get me it . She uses it a lot .
I prefer Ebay.. l get my nectar points lol.

anniegun · 21/10/2024 11:01

1 Very often yes
2 yes for higher priced items
3 Depends on how quickly I want something

I often look to buy from a suppliers site but am put off by delivery charges

redorangeye110w · 21/10/2024 11:02

With Amazon it's not just the price. If there is a problem they always deal with jt. So unless there is a big price difference I will go with Amazon.

GiantHornets · 21/10/2024 11:04

I never use Amazon so don’t have prime.

Amazon’s search facility is shite as well. If I search for a specific brand. Amazon will show me anything but the brand I want. Too many “sponsored” listings.

i prefer to buy from proper shops in the city centre or small businesses which offer online ordering.

angelcake20 · 21/10/2024 11:05

Yes, Amazon is the first place I look. I will only check prices elsewhere if it seems a bit high. I only toggle Prime on if I need something the next day or if postage seems to be high from other sellers.

ForPearlViper · 21/10/2024 11:06

I rarely buy via Prime as the Prime items are generally more expensive. I hate Amazon as the search function is terrible and it's a pain finding what you want. I only use Amazon if the items is cheaper there than anywhere else or it isn't available anywhere else. Very occasionally, I'll use it (when I'm being offered free Prime) if the need is urgent. I would never buy on Amazon without price checking elsewhere.

I also use Amazon for reviews on products. Generally I use the business sellers on Ebay - it is far easier to use and find what you want with fewer sponsored items in searches. It is also, generally speaking, a better price.

Exactly the same here.

MaMisled · 21/10/2024 11:08

Amazon is my first choice only because of Prime bext day delivery.

I don't bother Googling to find it cheaper.

Always filter to have Prime.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 21/10/2024 11:08

I’m looking at Amazon less often these days as first port of call as I don’t like all the cheap rubbish with fake reviews that falls apart after one use. Also the issue mentioned by PPs about sponsored items taking precedence over what I actually searched for.

I tend to favour things that are UK made/based and I’m less fussed about paying a bit for postage if I’m supporting an independent, UK business.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/10/2024 11:08

Always use Amazon and always filter by Prime - often it’s bulky things like cat litter though and not items coming from small businesses.

I used to often buy from small sellers on Etsy for “nice” things but my last two orders (both jewellery around the £30 mark) never shipped/ended up cancelled and refunded which really put me off.

BCSurvivor · 21/10/2024 11:09

I have Amazon Prime and am embarrassed by how often the van arrives outside!
I am definitely off by postage costs, and usually only order if postage is free.
On the flip side, I expect to pay postage on Ebay/Etsy.

Kendodd · 21/10/2024 11:09

I don't have Prime and avoid using Amazon if at all possible. Amazon always comes up as first option on Google.

mondaytosunday · 21/10/2024 11:09

Yes
If a high ticket item
No but would go Prime definitely if charged shipping otherwise. Speed is also a big factor so if Prime but have to wait I'm going for next day delivery in most cases.

StMarieforme · 21/10/2024 11:10

Hi OP-
Always check Amazon first
Always Google price next
Usually ends up Amazon as it's the same price. Convenient locker delivery is good too.

Negroany · 21/10/2024 11:11

I don't have Prime. I put things I'd like into my basket ubtil there is enough for free delivery (though I note the threshold keeps going up) then when I come to check out I wonder why I added them and I remove them! I often put things in "save for later" and readd them when there is something I want and need to top up for free delivery.

DP has Prime and maybe once a year I need something urgently and he orders it for me.

But I do tend to go to Amazon first. I'm just just and don't really live near any shops.

TeamPlaying · 21/10/2024 11:13

Depends on the type of item. For some things my first stop might be Etsy or a general google search.

I generally do a google search to check price. But Amazon is about convenience as much as it is about cost - not just getting the item quickly, but I already have an account, I’ve paid the cost of prime, I know they’re good at refunds etc. So I won’t generally buy elsewhere for just a pound or two saving.

TTPDTS · 21/10/2024 11:13

I use Amazon as my go to - they deliver so quickly and it's just convenient, I don't bother price checking to other websites sites normally. I do filter to only buy with prime normally too!

ExquisiteIyDecorated · 21/10/2024 11:16

1: Inexpensive things yes because the postage is usually not worth it from other vendors (say for items costing < £15). But if it can wait for a bit I will often go to an actual shop at the weekend.

2: Yes for anything more than about that £15 cut off and also if it's something that i have bought cheaper elsewhere previously.

3: Yes especially if there a lot of hits in the search, it's an easy way of whittling them down and I have got caught before with items taking 6 weeks because they are being shipped directly from China. Even without that it is irritating to have to wait say a week instead of a couple of days.

If it is obviously a small business I do sometimes go off Amazon and direct to their website but it does depend on delivery costs then.

Danceswithweasels · 21/10/2024 11:17
  1. Is Amazon the first place you look for something you specifically want? For non clothing, yes.
2, Will you then google the item to check price on other sites? Yes, usually but delivery times sometimes affect my decision if it's something I need urgently. 3, Will you hit the filter button to only buy with Prime or would you buy from a smaller supplier on Amazon if cheaper? No, I would look at all selling options including second hand or returns.
Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 21/10/2024 11:18

1 I do buy from Amazon but try to buy from independent websites if possible
2 Ill often pay a bit more to support independents and like to look for unique/origonal products
3 no Ive never used prime. Im not so impatient that I cant wait a few extra days.
