We already have Big Tunes for Little ones, or something, with Amanda and it's not bad. Looking for an alternative, any ideas?

they might be giants do some good stuff

putamayo ok but choose wisely

feetheart · 23/02/2008 08:18

Take note or ask children what they like from the radio and put it together (or get someone else to do it!) This way I get to listen to Scissor Sisters, the Rolling Stones and The Undertones - my Radio 2 brain-washing of small children is working nicely

Thomcat · 23/02/2008 08:19

Yeah I was looking at that putamayo stuff last night, a lot of it and all seemed a bit steel drummy iykwim. Have you got any of them?

Will google they might be giants now thanks

we have this and it's lovely. it's got all the old favourite songs, and the cd is nice to listen to, sung by some celebs like brian blessed etc, highly reccomend it

Thomcat · 23/02/2008 08:24

Feetheart, I get your point and am so with you. But since the introduction of a Disney CD that was a agift from someone they have gone children's music crazy. DP a dj of house music so he's finding it hard. At home they will listen to house music and love it but in the car now keep asking for 'singing spider' which is their way of asking for kiddy sing along music. Have tried making our music fun but not currently winning that battle!

DD2 is only 2 and Dd1 has SDN's and they are both so loving singing along to a funky version of wind the boibbin up (god help me) that i thought oh what the hell. I've deprived Dd1 of children music for nearly 6 years so not done to badly!

Nemoandthefishes · 23/02/2008 08:25

putamayo IS very steel drumesq, yes

they have odd good collections though, eg their xmas stuff is pretty good

there is also this rod hull lookalike that harpsi keeps recommending-dan zane.

Also what I have done is to get really decent versions of all the classic kids songs (and by this I mean "somewhere over the rainbow" and "mockingbird hill" NOT sodding baa baa black sheep off itunes and made up my own tape that I can bear listening to.

Fillyjonk · 23/02/2008 08:33

woody guthrie/billy bragg actually has some decent kids stuff

also peggy/pete seeger

oh and peter paul and mary do tolerable versions of the classics. I think if you are going to listen to, say, morningtown ride 400 times it should at least be a decent version. Again-itunes.

Fillyjonk · 23/02/2008 08:34

more stuff

FrannyandZooey · 23/02/2008 08:45

Dan Zanes

MilaMae · 23/02/2008 09:40

Good thread.

Our 3 now seem to like Mika, Scissor Sisters and Abba (they heard the 1st 2 on Radio 2) , they are 3 and 4.

A mighty huge relief from nursery rhyme CDs. Will be the 1st year DP and I don't stumble out of the car humming The Wheels on the Bus after a 6 hour drive through France!!!!!

That Giant cd looks good.

LindzDelirium · 23/02/2008 20:09

nursery rhyme cds are the work of the devil, DD has been listening to the Manics since day one and now at the age of 5 with her first gig already under her belt she is a huge fan, just like Mummy

TheHonEnid · 23/02/2008 20:23

sadly the most popular kids music chez Enid is

this particularl horror

and putamayo - one of them is good and not too steel drummy

mine like pop music now though (8 and 5)

TheHonEnid · 23/02/2008 20:23

oh and their fave is that mark ronson album thank god

Donk · 23/02/2008 20:25

I love the Putamayo African Playground CD - and so did/does DS.

choosyfloosy · 23/02/2008 20:26

i want to get ds the soundtrack CD of the Jungle Book. That's a kids CD I can live with.

Also, I highly recommend Tchaikovsky highlights of Swan Lake and the Nutcracker. I used to bounce my Spacehopper to it [nostalgia] and ds now likes it too.

I'm looking for folk CDs with real trad songs that we can enjoy but having crashed and burned with a sea shanties CD that is very good but unbelievably hardcore (i.e. sounds like sung by large troupe of threatening old salts) I haven't succeeded yet.

Donk · 23/02/2008 20:27

p.s. Its not at all steel drummy

choosyfloosy · 23/02/2008 20:28

Oh btw ds loves Johnny Cash greatest hits. Though I feel a bit queasy when he sings 'Don't ever play with guns - I shot a man in Reno...' etc.

MadamePlatypus · 23/02/2008 20:32

I particularly like to sing along to "you are my sunshine" on "singalong with putumayo". DS isn't so enthusiastic about my singing, but what does he know? he is only 4.

MadamePlatypus · 23/02/2008 20:33

Also, DS likes the "Food Fighters". One day I will have to be honest with him about their real name.
